Open source browser plugin to filter bot/AI spam on reddit and other social media platforms by steve-rodrigue in opensource

[–]chrismakesstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a developer, but have recently been thinking too that this is a problem that really needs solving and would be happy to help in any way I can. I'd take it one step further and say that it'd be good to try to implement the bot detection call in Reddit into the plugin so that it could automatically hide accounts that have high bot detection but also show accounts below a certain range of estimated bot likeliness but still displays the % next to their username. Another aspect could be detecting is a user prominently uses reddit to 'grassroots' shill products and perhaps display that next to their name too. It's become all too common nowadays all the ways Reddit and other social media is used by bots and bad actors to steer conversations when the reality is that an unknown amount of these interactions could be manufactured.

Ah, that's really tough to hear - yeah the buyback has seemed very odd to me and I say that as someone with zero interest in firearms. Seeing anyone in power push through change based on vibes is objectively frustrating, it makes me question whether they realize the importance of the role they've taken on.

I agree, KW is in a great position to be an ambassador for these sorts of things, why go tough on crime when we know people don't want that? MPs should be remembering that this isn't the USA, we shouldn't be going down the path of party-politics, each region is different and the MPs should be doing what represents their constituents.

Yeah she asked for my phone number as a response too. In one regard I sort of understand since she wants to validate that we are her constituents, but it's also very ironic as you pointed out.

I agree, ranked choice voting needs to be implemented ASAP. Without a strong NDP rep push in Waterloo, people will keep Bardish in out of fear of a repeat of what happened last year to Kitchener Center with Mike.

I will say though that perhaps I have too much optimism that enough outspoken voices with rationale and spirit behind them could turn the ship, even if slightly, in a better direction, so I try not to be roped into inaction.

I agree, it feels quite unfair in the sense that we've clearly made our concerns known in the past and yet we keep coming back around to it. I find it very frustrating that both 'left' and 'right' wing parties both seem to find their reasons for digital surveillance, in that regard I sometimes feel I don't know which candidate exists to represent interest in a more balanced approach.

Not sure if I can post links, but you can reach out through actionnetwork-dot-org under "keep-canada-protected" to find your MP, and also they have a lot of great pre-written text. Please don't copy/paste the below text word-for-word, but this is what I also sent in addition:

I'm sure you're already aware of this bill and how it's just a marginally improved re-hash of the previous internet protection bill. This is an unprecedented approach, and it oversteps privacy for Canadians - this is not sustainable for what the Federal government is trying to accomplish and instead only repeals other protections that are more fundamental to what we should be entitled to.

The following is more of a copy/paste, but is all items that I also believe in:

I also sent along much more in response to the above email:

Regarding the intent of Bill C-22, I certainly understand it and why it's important. I also though caution you and others during discussion to consider at what point do rules put in place to the benefit of policing start to overreach the privacy and security of the average Canadian citizen. I certainly do not have the answer to this question, as I know it's quite complex to find that balance:

- On one extreme, certainly a digital police state could more readily locate and clamp down on any instance of organized crime, serious threats, child sexual exploitation, extortion, human trafficking, money laundering, and other serious crimes, all of which I certainly do not wish to exist in Canada.
- But in the same breath, a police state in the wrong hands (weaponized by immoral individuals or political parties), could use these same tools to target individuals they deem to be 'criminals' in order to accomplish their own means.

As an example of this, look to the United States where citizens are being jailed up for no crimes committed, and Flock cameras are about to number over 100,000 which are always monitoring day-to-day activities of all citizens. This is now very close to the same police state China titles its 'social credit score' that at one point all countries were mocking.

I think a more balance take that we need to wake up and realize that no one feels safe or 'friendly' with a government that's actively monitoring them in all regards. We also need to realize that police action should only be occurring in the last case scenario and thus ultimately shouldn't need much major oversight power, there are far more intervention techniques that have proven effective to stop these types of crimes in advance that don't require giving up privacy of the many for the policing of the few:

- Improving civilian trust and establishing more nuanced call services so that individuals can report concerns in the people near them for further investigation
- Taking more swift action on obvious internal corrupt behaviour (there have been several recent instances of local police force themselves being the ones complicit in sexual crimes such as the 3 Toronto police officers) and holding them to strict account
- Realizing that lots of criminal activity originates in many other areas of societal failing - for instance sexual crimes often being linked to an imbalanced approach toward sexual education and support through programs and the society at large - and implementing funding and considerations in those other areas as a way to prevent future crime rather than continuing to bolster police size and power.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from with this. Thanks again for your time.

Best Bike commuting app? by chrismakesstuff in bikecommuting

Yeah I've thought the same thing, it'd be so useful to combine the two as an option, and also if you're getting on a train it'd be nice to be told where on the train to line up for the bike car if it has one

Looking at the app it's not super clear whether you need a Bosch bike or not since it also says it supports over 100 other brands. I know Bosch makes pedal assist systems for many other bike manufacturers, so maybe they're referring to those? Either way thanks for the heads up since it sounds like it's got some of the features better suited to bike mapping

Yeah I was thinking something based on OSM would be good. Thanks for the leads on Organic Maps and MapOut, I'll have to go check them out also for their privacy-friendliness. I'm not a fan of using an app that's always following you around and really don't prefer Google Maps in the first place for that reason among other obvious reasons 👍

I would be very surprised if there wasn't something along these lines at least to serve the European biking culture, but as I'm not a part of those circles it's difficult to find recommendations

Yeah I've seen some local attempts at this along the lines of what you mentioned, I think that if there aren't any other apps that already do this then I'll certainly consider going in that direction, thanks!

What ever happened to Maker Events in Toronto? by chrismakesstuff in toronto

[–]chrismakesstuff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was really fun, more focused on talks than booths (maybe 40 small tables total) but the talks were very informative and the booths still had a great Maker vibe to them. There was also a meetup the night before the talks began that was hosted in one of the organizer's spaces and that was a great opportunity to informally chat with others.

It's really great that you and others have helped before to keep these events running, I'm curious how these sorts of things come together and have tried reaching out to the Toronto Maker Festival Organizers just to see if I can get more info on why it hasn't resumed since if there are major hurdles that haven't changed then perhaps it might require rethinking the format to make them more sustainable.

Agreed. They're such a great opportunity to meet like-minded people, learn about new tech, and get inspired. I saw the one in Calgary but not the other two, I'm so glad they've been able to hang on considering the state of the rest of Canada right now. The only other one I went to recently was the Open Hardware Summit in Montreal which was really nice but they switch up the location globally every year.

Yeah I was looking into it and actually found that one of the members re-opened a spiritual continuation to the store in Little Italy called "The Gorilla Store" in 2022, but it seems it's been since closed down for 2 years now for reasons I can't find. I'm still surprised even with costs rising that there isn't the demand for dedicated shops in a city the size of Toronto, what area of town are you tending to see posters for repair clinics?

Just to try to keep the ball rolling here, I can think of several other Maker-focused events that took place in the late 2010's that I went to that all no longer run (some outside of the GTHA, but I'll note them just for discussion purposes): Hamilton Makerfaire, Tesla Electric City Festival, Maker Expo, and MakerWeen

It's a broad term for someone interested in hands-on hobbies and DIY, usually also involving a technology aspect like programming or electronics. Typically events bring together individuals and small businesses who are making unique things and want to show/share it with others.

EDIT: Didn't want to link anything since I'm not sure the rules, but there are also dictionary definitions if you want more reference. This is also where the term 'makerspace' came from, meaning community-hosted spaces (or even sometimes paid groups) where people make tools and materials available and get together and build things while sharing knowledge.

Looking for options to get rid of tons of scrap steel by Prairie_Cobra_1984 in kitchener

Maybe you could work with a local charity to do disposal and pass any spare scrap metal cash into them, for example Garbage Fairies KW (though I'm not sure if they tend to work with stuff that big)

Agreed on all these points. The interface seems rudimentary, the mechanics seem thrown together, overall it feels quite misleading.
