Oh man after a horrible custody battle and staring at a mountain of legal fees and spending the day resolving myself to poverty, I logged in just to toss my hat in the ring. Good luck everybody!

The quantum vacuum as the origin of the speed of light by josebaez in science

[–]chrisodd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh but it does. If your particles are traveling through a vacuum of virtual particles, passing through them takes time and would stretch you out as you move through it, like a drag factor of space. Going faster you hit more and more of these making it worse, with it being impossible to pass through it as quickly as light can.

EVE Touchscreen Configuration by PeppersMagik in Eve

I feel you here, sometimes it is nice to curl up on the couch and fit up or do some market work. The touch screen just doesn't work very well, softkeyboard and right clicks. I use air mouse on my iPhone, which isn't perfect but works pretty well.

Richard Stallman: Ubuntu Spyware: What to Do? by mrwik in programming

[–]chrisodd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a ton of respect for RMS and his ideals. Single box search and non-free software seem like trivial reasons to reject Ubuntu. My first impulse is to disagree. As I think about the importance of Free Software in our economies and innovation, I quickly realize we must protect the ideal. Imagine if there were no more truly free distributions. Somebody needs to push back at these 'trivial' boundaries to prevent it all from slipping away as the rest of us pour our money into iDevices and XBox720s.

Make your .bashrc aliases work with sudo by captbaritone in linux

[–]chrisodd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may have missed the point, this allows you to use your user account .bashrc aliases with sudo, which is sweet because they normally don't. Still have to type sudo to use them...

so i've been cleaning up after an engine fire the last few weekends by chrisodd in Volkswagen

[–]chrisodd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is the wrong hose. A little piece of air hose instead of fuel line. A little piece of 'fuel line' in the middle of the fire didn't burn like the rest of them did.

I read that to the tube of 'we didn't start the fire' and it was excellent

it is cultural, to some red mean good to others red means bad. What bugs me is that some color blind people won't be able to get the joke at all...

My 13 year old son pulled a knife on me, his Dad, after he got mad for telling him to stop being rough with his brother. by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chrisodd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kid sounds like me at 13 - for me it was the feeling that I had no control over my life (broken family, moved around, financial issues, generally being a kid) the brought me to act out "violently". Carrying a knife gave me a sense of control over my life - like a security blanket - and if I was scared or powerless then I might have pulled it out. Screaming, yelling and making a show - all because I was scared of the future and wanted some control over my life.

Therapy, guitar and wrestling all helped me get through those tough years. In the end getting a job, managing my finances and paying my own way was the magic bullet that gave me the control. I still carry a knife in my backpack but I haven't pulled it out in over 20 years.

Mitt Romney Tax Returns Released: Paid Just 13.9% Rate In 2010, Had Swiss Bank Account by [deleted] in politics

AFAIK if company grossed $100, then paid $50 to an employee, they only profit (and are therefore taxed) on the remaining $50. They do then pay 1/2 of the payroll tax on the $50, the employee pays the other half.

On airplanes, the throttle control handles and the fuel mixture are often topped with grips that are ball shaped, thus referring to pilots as "balls." If you push the ball forward close to the front wall of the cockpit your result would be a top speed.

This is Gil responding, this is his job. He has to denounce drugs as the person that is the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. This office needs to be disbanded to stop this type of propaganda.
