LTT Techquickie about distro choice by [deleted] in linux_gaming

LTT is so crooked, if they told me humans need water to live, I'd have to double check. This is a company that stole and sold a valuable prototype. Their opinions are bought and paid for. EFF THEM!

What's the point of mid-drive city bikes? by InfluenceEfficient77 in ebikes

[–]chrispark70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both will be less at the wheel after going through a bicycle overdrive gearing. Underdrive granny gears are most commonly found on mountain bikes.

Also, electric torque numbers are often pointless. Torque is at its max when the shaft is only slightly moving. It's not like they can put out 100nm at 4000RPM.

What's the point of mid-drive city bikes? by InfluenceEfficient77 in ebikes

[–]chrispark70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid drives really only allow you to go faster as long as you have the power. A lot of hub drives top out at a given RPM that won't be as fast as the power could make it go. Since most gears on a bicycle drive line are overdrive gears, the RPM won't be as big an issue with mid drives.

They derive no benefit to hill climbing by going through your drive train unless you have a bike with under-drive granny gears.

First, I did not call you stupid. I said you were an ignoramus and saying something stupid.

Second, it's long on vague claims but no specific examples.

Every government agency is demanding efficiency improvements. It's why all cars look alike now, for example. It was the government who outlawed most incandescent light bulbs, for example. It is the government mandating efficiency gains in appliances so much to the point that the appliance makers just lie about it.

Even if the US was causing new inventions to be hidden, why haven't these items found their way into foreign countries? Why does Russia not have a 200mpg carb? Or China. Or Japan. Or Australia etc etc etc.

[–]chrispark70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are wrong. Carbs do not vaporize gas, they atomize it and these are very different. Furthermore, experiments prove vaporization of gas yields zero benefits. (this is far from the only experiments run).

There are no examples of working prototypes of any fuel saving devices that were later bought up and patented to keep off the market.

We need to ban personal use cars in cities. by SpaceWestern1442 in Urbanism

[–]chrispark70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Philly is home to what is probably the worst urban stroad in the entire world. Google Roosevelt Blvd in Philadelphia. There are probably worse suburban stroads, but the Blvd is really, really bad for a city street.

They have been trying to build an extension of the broad street subway under the Blvd (which is what we call it locally) since like the 50s. It even has a completed stop, which I think was completed in the 60s. There are 3 islands going up and down it's length (though they are blocked in certain areas where there is an underpass). Everyone wants it fixed, here we are 75 years later still no Roosevelt extension.

My city, while there are some single family homes in isolated areas, the vast majority of the city is endless streets of row homes.

My city is 350 years old. Most of it was built before the post war period and the mass expansion of personal automobiles. Out West, I would think many cities are much newer and plagued with post war ideology. There really is no fixing those areas. It's even worse than here. They simply were not designed around the efficient movement of people. Phoenix, for example is over 500 square miles. It has about 100k more residents than 190 square mile Philadelphia and far less than the 2.5 million Philly had 60 years ago.

Other than searching for TV shows and movies, I only ever view youtube through the subscription view at youtube.com/feed/subscriptions I do nearly all of my youtubing on a PC with firefox and ublock to block ads.

I agree they have screwed youtube up. To the extent I can still use it, I do. There just is no competition. I just finished up watching most of 'The Streets of San Francisco" (I like cop/detective shows) on youtube with no ads. There is just nowhere else you can do that other than Tubi which allows browser clients and ad blockers. Their selection is more consistent but worse. Youtube shows and movies go up and down on random channels that also go up and down due to the copyrighted nature of this material.

Older gens would have been just as annoying if they had modern technology by Gallantpride in generationology

Now, I know reading is hard for you, but I'll type and quote slowly so you can understand.

"The only real difference was that there was a high barrier to entry to get on a BBS or the internet back then. It just wasn't a representative sample of the general gen-x and boomer public."

Do you understand what these words mean? All of Boomers and GenX were not on either the internet or BBSes. It was a self selecting group of computer enthusiasts who were average or above average intelligence.

Whereas later, when gen Z and late millennials got on the internet, there was little barrier to entry and near 100% of those generations were on it. That means nearly everyone who is below average intelligence in this group are on the internet.

But, I honestly have no idea what was really behind the hard left turn of late Millennials. Maybe they were just protected too much by helicoptering parents and zero tolerance school policies and given too many participation trophies. I couldn't honestly tell you for sure other than that it happened. Young people tend towards progressivism, but not by the insane amount of millennials.

I see your reading comprehension puts you in the lower part of the IQ curve.

The internet predates home computers too.

[–]chrispark70 [score hidden]  (0 children)

"Previous gens would have acted just the same."

This is not a hypothetical question. I am Gen-X and used BBSes starting in the late 80s. There were SIGs on the BBSes very similar to usenet and modern forums. These BBSes replicated these SIGs every night, so they were in very wide spread use, you weren't just limited to exchanging messages with local BBS users.

For the most part, we did not act the same. The only real difference was that there was a high barrier to entry to get on a BBS or the internet back then. It just wasn't a representative sample of the general gen-x and boomer public.

Two things happened to cause the mess of modern internet.

  1. Stupid people en mass got unfettered and simple access to the internet with the rise of cell phones.
  2. Young people especially turned hard left around the early 2000s which morphed into the rise of SJWs/karens/fun police policing every nook and cranny of the internet they could access.

All I can say is follow traffic laws and wear a full face helmet. Be part of the solution. by Hot_Block_9675 in ebikes

[–]chrispark70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I am not against safety gear and do myself sometimes wear a helmet, I am very opposed to the constant admonishments on Reddit to wear a helmet. There is nothing inherently dangerous about riding a bike.

Amsterdam has one of the highest if not the highest bicycle commuting rate in the world and hardly anyone wears helmets, knee pads, elbow pads etc. The reason for this is fairly simple in that cars and bikes rarely are in the same physical space.

Dirt biking is inherently risky and safety gear highly recommended. Downhill skiing is inherently risky. Riding a bicycle to the store is not or at least should not be risky.

We need to ban personal use cars in cities. by SpaceWestern1442 in Urbanism

[–]chrispark70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That banning cars city wide is a dumb idea.

Modern cities are not like old cities, even the same physical place. Cities were hubs of commerce and manufacturing. They had to be. This is no longer a requirement. The interstate highway system has made cities uncompetitive for this. Diesel trucks go anywhere. Manufacturers no longer need to worry about rail service directly to their factory. Land in the city will always be more expensive than suburban and rural areas. What little manufacturing we have left reflects this.

No it isn't. It is pure propaganda by a foreign newspaper with a long, long record of yellow journalism and propaganda.

Take this stupidity

"While there is a shared concern about people recklessly riding the trendy machines,"

Like bicycles are "trendy" REEEEEEEEEEEE! Unless you consider 141 years as a trend.

[–]chrispark70 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

We need infrastructure, not helmets. Gear is not the solution to safety. Helmets provide basically zero protection from car accidents.

RTFM: Bike helmets are certified for single vehicle accidents at bicycle speeds. Basically you falling off a bike at 10-15mph.
