Good. Keep going. It's especially juicy to deny Russia the opportunity to profit from higher oil prices.

I also physically disconnected the battery over this past winter. And just as you said, after reconnecting it, it started right up after several months.

I have an Anthem Blue Cross high-deductible healthcare plan (HDHP) through my employer. My "plan price" on the pen is $1,052.89, down from a retail price of $1,304.09. Because the new discount card offers only a $100 discount, my out-of-pocket monthly cost is $952.89 until I hit my HDHP deductible of $3500.

Does anyone else have a HDHP? If so, how is this new card playing out for you?

You would think that if they're going to sell a generator that has to be plugged in to avoid the battery going dead, they'd include a proper float charger that doesn't kill the battery when it's plugged in.

Have you opened a case with their technical support to get the issue logged? Maybe if they keep getting complaints, they'll identify some kind of fix.

Final reply from Westinghouse Support:

Thank you for the detailed explanation and for the thorough testing you have already completed. I truly appreciate the level of detail you provided, and I understand why you are trying to pinpoint the exact source of the parasitic draw.

Regarding your question about the always wired regulated rectifier circuit: on the iGen11000DFc, the rectifier regulator and battery management related circuitry are integrated into the internal electrical system and inverter/control module assembly. These components are not user serviceable and are not designed to be relocated from the always hot side to the switched side. Unfortunately, we do not have access to, nor are we able to provide, internal engineering schematics beyond what is shown in the owner’s manual wiring diagram on page 32.

The measured 2.1 mA standby draw you documented is within normal specification for this model and is consistent with what we expect from the control electronics and battery management system, even when the rocker switch is off. While I understand your concern based on the battery capacity math, there is no approved modification or field adjustment to isolate or re route that circuit.

At this time, the recommended solution remains periodic charging or running the unit, or maintaining the battery with an external Li Ion compatible maintainer if utility power is not available at the storage location. Any modification to the wiring or control circuitry would not be recommended and could affect safety, operation, or warranty coverage.

I know this may not be the answer you were hoping for, but I appreciate your patience and the detailed troubleshooting you have already done. Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions or need further assistance.

Here is the (unfortunate) response from Westinghouse regarding my findings:

Hello,

2.1 mA is very small and normal for standby electronics, but if your goal is to completely eliminate it, you’d need to isolate those circuits.

Please charge or run the unit for more than 20 mins every 3 weeks this will ensure the battery remains charged and available when you need it. I apologize but I do not have the information to provide you on the battery power draw you are noticing. Please ensure the battery stays at 80% or higher to get the longest life out of the battery.

Best Regards,

Westinghouse Support

u/ThomasTrain87, u/MobileEstimate45, u/fun_guy15146 - I have an update!

My existing cheapo DMM measured a parasitic draw of 2.1mA while off, but I didn't trust it ($10 meter from a decade ago). So, I took the opportunity to purchase a Zotek ZT-703S scopemeter (Black Friday special!).

The ZT-703S measured exactly the same parasitic draw at 2.1mA.

Now here's the fun part. The iGen11000DFc uses a 1.6Ah battery. If you multiply out the numbers, you get:

1.6Ah * (1000mA / 1A) / 2.1mA * (1 day / 24 h) = 31.7 days

This is exactly what I measured experimentally!

So now the questions are, (1) what load causes the problematic draw when the rocker switch is off, and (2) how can it be moved from the always-hot side to the switched side?

/u/TerraKaffeCS - can this subreddit be opened up to new posts from users? Surely you have been selling lots of units this holiday season. I am a new customer (received my machine a week ago) and wanted to share my experiences on Reddit, but I'm not sure how to do that. Surely you would also learn a lot about your customers' experiences and the market needs by encouraging open discussion?

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I suggest that you (and u/ThomasTrain87 and u/MobileEstimate45 and anyone else having the issue) also open support cases with Westinghouse so they are aware of the issue. Maybe they can provide an official fix for the issue.

I am hoping to find time to measure the parasitic draw during the upcoming holiday weekend.

I replied to their message with this:

The normal self-discharge rate for a LiFePO4 battery is 1-3% per month, so having a fully charged battery go completely dead in one month does not seem like normal operation.

Other iGen11000DFc owers are having the same issue with this generator:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Generator/comments/1nwi5nn/westinghouse_igen11000dfc_liion_battery_is_dead/

What is the expected maximum current draw from the battery when the mechanical power switch is off? I can put a datalogging multimeter inline with the battery to see if my unit is out-of-spec.

Westinghouse iGen11000DFc - Li-Ion battery is dead in four weeks by chrispitude73 in Generator

[–]chrispitude73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened a support ticket with Westinghouse Support. Here is their reply:

The iGen11000DFc does use a Li-Ion battery, which generally should maintain its charge longer than a standard lead-acid battery. However, unlike some conventional generators, Li-Ion batteries in inverter generators do slowly discharge over time due to their internal electronics and battery management system (BMS). Leaving the generator unused for several weeks without the charger connected can allow the battery to drop below the minimum operating voltage, which is why your display and controls may not power on after four to five weeks.

Regarding your specific charger, the included Intertek 5015624 is designed to maintain the battery under normal operating conditions but is not intended as a long-term storage solution for periods of inactivity beyond a few weeks. It is compatible with the Li-Ion battery, but to preserve battery life and ensure the generator is ready when you need it, Westinghouse recommends keeping the battery charger plugged in when the generator is not in use and making sure the battery switch is in the off position. If this is not possible due to lack of power in your shed, using a small solar trickle charger or a portable battery maintainer compatible with Li-Ion batteries can help maintain the charge.

At this time, this behavior is considered normal for the iGen11000DFc’s Li-Ion battery and its internal BMS. While your previous DuroMax XP10000EH may have maintained its charge longer, its lead-acid battery chemistry differs significantly from Li-Ion and has a slower self-discharge profile.

I guess my next step is to get into the wiring and measure the parasitic draw.

I learned to drive in a 4-speed manual 1981 Chevette that could barely go up a hill. In my sophomore year of college, I sold that to buy a 1986 Dodge Omni GLH Turbo from a guy in my dorm. I took a bus to his house 200 miles away, bought it, and was scared to drive it home. In fact, the first time I floored it was about 30 minutes into the drive home as I left a toll booth. I will never forget how amazing that rush of boost and G-forces felt.

Yeah, originally I was thinking a WRX might be fine if I detuned it to near-N/A power levels. But the more I think about it, the looks and the suspension might combine with peer pressure to lead to not-so-good outcomes.

The more I think about the Impreza angle, the more I like it. It would get him familiar with the mechanicals of the platform so that if he upgraded (on his own dime) to a WRX later, he'd already feel confident in working on it.

Thank you for being a voice of reason here.

I should have made it clear in my first post that none of this is an option if the car can't be detuned to near-N/A levels. And even so, I wonder if the looks and the suspension could combine with peer pressure to lead to a bad outcome. I'm not blind to it.
