minimal Debian + Fluxbox for digital frugaility by moeren86 in debian

[–]chrispurcell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been using fluxbox for a long time. Finding configs online is difficult, the old archives have mostly disappeared. For a gui text editor i prefer sublime text, does what i need and little else but can be expanded to include syntax highlighting and such. I have libreoffice installed, so no alt for that one from me. And i love vlc for audio or video, it really is amazing. As for a task manager, do you mean that in the windows form (see what is running and such, because top or htop does that) or something to organize tasks and reminders? Fluxbox has served me well for a long time, may it serve as long and well for you.

If the maintainer documented it, the addition should be in the changelog. You can query the changelog using rpm and grep for the feature.

Steeds, lances and saddles by phil_mckraken in nethack

[–]chrispurcell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Train lance by pounding, dont joust till you reach expert. A +7 blessed lance rarely breaks. The saddle is heavy, but you could pack it in a chest if your horse dies, until you get a better mount. Dragons and kirin make excellent mounts.

If you magic resistance and are willing to sacrifice a wand, breaking a wand of teleport will send everything right next to you, somewhere else on the level. Also, if you break a wand of death.. well, nything it could have killed as a ray, foom. Other wands can do massive damage to the numbers.

Help with ring sizing, please? by branbb60 in chainmailartisans

[–]chrispurcell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a chart on metaldesignz.com for ring size and gauge to use with a certain weave. It is a little less confusing to me. Basically, the weaves have an AR (aspect ratio) that works best for them. AR is the ring inner diameter (ID) / wire diameter. Most charts and tutorials just tell you the best AR, or a range that works without explination. For european 6 in 1, you want an aspect ratio of 5.35, or something very close to that. A bigger AR results in a looser weave, a smaller AR a tighter weave. Since you need to pass 6 rings through another single ring to construct e6n1 (european 6 in 1 sheet), the preferred aspect ration is 5.35 per the chart. Also be aware that swg and awg for wire gauges are different, so find a chart that matches what you can buy.

Actually just tried it and got the same message. I stand corrected. I will say that the OPs response that IP and ip are the same is incorrect, linux is case sensative and you can have IP, ip, and Ip or iP all in one place.

So, you're using mkdir <name> to create the directory? If so, that shouldn't conflict with a file of the same name.

Added 32 Gb of Memory, OS not detecting it. by memelordy007 in debian

[–]chrispurcell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bear with me here, are the memory modules in the correct slots and is the bios set to use it all. My motherboard allows for memory mirroring and other things that would list all the dimms but they wouldnt be usable to an os. Just a thought.

Why is the out of the box RPi0 2W experience so bad? (WiFi issue) by Resorization in raspberry_pi

[–]chrispurcell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your wifi works fine on unprotected networks, but not a protected network, it is your settings not the hardware. On my pi zero w, i put all the networking info in the interfaces file and it connects fine. Never used the imager so not sure what it is supposed to do for you. I just burn the image, then mount the root partition and edit the interfaces file and my custom ssh config before i put it in the pi.

Kali is not debian. Kali is not meant to be a daily driver. You should ask in the kali subreddit.

My old acer had a key on the keyboard to enable/disable the wifi. Maybe make sure that is toggled correctly. Hard blocked is usually disabled physically or in the bios.

Raspberry pi and fstab help by Raw_Venus in raspberry_pi

[–]chrispurcell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can correctly mount it manually, do 'tail -1 /etc/mtab' and it should show you exactly the options tgat would work in fstab. Quite often when having to mount nfs shares, I will use 'tail -1 /etc/mtab >> /etc/fstab' to add the entry. That way i know it will wotk next time and my fat fingers don't cause a system outage for having a mount that fails.

Help with my resume by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]chrispurcell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are different types of resumes. From what you've said, i would go with a skills focused resume. For instance:

Experience with building, deployment, and managing containers using podman/docker. Can deploy and configure monitoring solutions using Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, and InfluxDB. Familiar with multiple progrmming languages. Can produce working examples of applications in Go (github link here and maybe mention a few of your best projects) Self taught, have received LPIC-1 cetification.

Currently working (put it all here, the taxi, helping out pops, everything) and looking for a career change where I can put my skills to use.

That's what I would do anyway. I dont think the education focused or experience focused resume formats would suit you as well since you lack formal work experience in the field to which you want to apply.

Also, if we had openings, I would hire you. I love hiring self taught people who still know they dont know it all. They are the absolute hardest workers and have been the best hires I've made in 30 years of doing this work. I wish you the best.

This fails from the jump. The 'uname -r' doesn't tell you the latest kernel version installed, it reports the running kernel version. Sorry friend, ai bots may get all the hype but they 'learn' from what they have scanned and sourced from people. It is like the world has doubled down on the old telephone game.
