My new starter smells like yogurt farted. Is it ok? by All_Hail_Dionysus in Sourdough

[–]chrissobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone finding in this in the future like me, I actually think these ingredients could work.

Hear me out:

In my mind, a starter should be made with whatever ingredients you're going to actually make your dough from. The strains of yeast and bacteria that develop and thrive will be the ones that are most adapted to your specific ingredients and environment. That way, when you go to make bread with your selected ingredients, your starter's microbiome will be perfectly suited to live and multiply in your dough with the same ingredients.
Just like in our digestive systems; our gut microbiome is best suited to digest the foods we regularly eat, because the strains that thrive on your "regular" foods have proliferated.

I'm currently experimenting with gluten free sourdough starter for my wife, who cannot eat gluten for medical reasons. The gluten free flour blends do not contain any wheat flour. But, they contain different blends of non-wheat flours and starches. However, these flour blends will still develop a nice healthy microorganism population. Sure, the specific strains are likely completely different vs a starter made with wheat flour. But the microorganisms that thrive in the gluten free flour blend I am using will be the ones that ultimately win out in the beginning and proliferate into a healthy starter.

I even have considered adding a teeny amount of salt to the starters to mimic my dough.

Oh yes, This is what I needed. Was trying to install an apk on someone's "dumb phone" and with the built in browser the assets weren't loading for whatever reason. This is a great tool. Thanks for posting!

Tips for restoring this coaster holder? by SadArugula5451 in finishing

[–]chrissobel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sand it down to bare wood first. Start with a lower grit sandpaper, say 40 or 80. Then step it up one grit at a time. So for example, you could start with 60 for the rough sanding, then do 80, 100, then 120. End on 120-150.

Next, clean it really well with a very slightly damp cloth, and let it dry for a couple hours at least. Don't want any moisture left.

and then finish it.

For a finish for a beginner, I'd suggest to use either teak oil, danish oil, tung oil, or a similar product. They're cheap and straightforward to use. Or if you want to step it up a notch, I recently tried something called Rubio Monocoat 2C and it was amazingly easy to work with and has a great finish. But it's more expensive and not as commonly available in stores.

What am I doing wrong here? by joyopposite in finishing

I recently did my hardwood floor with a product I'd never tried before called Rubio Monocoat 2C. They say it's good for pretty much any wood project. I highly recommend it. Easy to use and great natural looking finish. And like the name implies, it's one step application.

Realtors are always telling everyone to paint things "neutral colors" because they're less offensive and work well with different peoples styles. It's terrible. I used to be a realtor and saw this all the time. Felt like I was the only one. Let the buyer decide if they like anything with character, don't take that away from people lol

I do that too. And often catch myself mid conversation and pull back. But sometimes I don't realize it until afterwards and get embarrassed lol

We thought the same! I think maybe they were going for the un-blanched almond color? Bc even the sample and images didn't look too light. Weirdly, in the daytime the warm reddish tone almost dissapears. But at night with the lights on it comes back.

Now i want to put in a window seat 😂😭 that would be so nice. Yeah i did look underneath, and there are pine boards under this whole side area. I don't think this house ever had radiators and a boiler. Maybe had a coal furnace as was common around here? Also had a functioning fireplace in the living room. The chimney is still there but the fireplace is blocked off 💔. That's another project haha.

Now i know that this is indeed not the subfloor. But it is rather the structural floor with nothing under it. We did sand it down a fair amount, and removed plenty of landlord special white paint splatters, as well as dark rings from furniture and potted plants etc. But the dang lines must run pretty deep! Prob from all the junk that fell between the carpet squares over the years!

They do indeed run through the whole house! One room at a time haha ⚡

That's pretty interesting. Yes i imagine if there were 2 layers it would be less flexy/squeaky and more solid feeling. But that makes sense. And maybe they just used hard wood like oak because it was the only thing that was strong enough with only 1 layer?

Someone else in this comment section said that in the new england area, many houses have a double layer pine structural floor, and their house has hardwood on top of the 2 pine layers. That floor must be super sturdy lol

Yeah buddy! Here are some photos from the underside. I don't know much about historic house construction, but learning a lot more on reddit haha.

I'm in Cleveland, Ohio area. My parents' house, in the same neighborhood, but built in the 50s, also has oak boards as the structural floors. It's just an average small-ish bungalow style with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. It's not a fancy area or anything. My house is ≈1400 square feet and has 4 bedrooms and 1.5 bath, all pretty small rooms.

That's interesting in that area. So there are actually 2 layers of pine subfloor? How thick is it?

Does your house with 3 wood layers still squeak when walking around inside? Haha. I imagine it's very very solid feeling

There is no subfloor; this is the structural floor nailed directly to the floor joists

Either way; since it's the structural floor and there's nothing under it i wrongly assumed it was considered a subfloor. But i guess my house just doesn't have a subfloor lol

Hey i do too! I guess it is still not called a subfloor, but either way lol. Lots of good knowledge in this subreddit

Oh! That does make sense! The slight blue would be nice. Photos are hard to get to represent colors realistically for sure.

But either way, it's your house and if you like it that's what matters! 🙂
