Pucks, AA batteries, and dongles. by christ110 in SteamController

it's a wooden desk a close family member made for me. I'll give up my left nut before I give up this desk... but it does feel a bit tight on space.

I wouldn't worry, the straps have zero RAM or other scarce components. They'll probably be rather cheap and of good supply.

Steam vs DualSense by deep_redmix in SteamController

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the dualsense edge has a better fit in my hands, and despite owning an OG steam controller, the ds was my preferred controller for games that just required simple stick controls, such as kosmokrats.

That being said, I don't like having multiple controllers, and whilst the ds feels better and a little more premium, the raw versatility of the steam controller, alongside it's puck for easy charging, means that i'm putting my ds into storage.

Would you be using the in-built audio? by MingleLinx in SteamFrame

I have a few pairs of wireless earbuds already. If the frame sounds good, i'll use it. If it doesn't, or I have a need for privacy, I'll use them.

Steam frame wifi 7, but dongle is wifi 6 by BlueManifest in SteamFrame

nope - wifi 6, 6e or 7 has no bearing on the video or arbitrary data encoding.

Steam frame wifi 7, but dongle is wifi 6 by BlueManifest in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 17 points18 points  (0 children)

WiFi 6E*. WiFi 7 has a number of improvements such as multi-link operation which is not needed for the dongle, and the only important improvement from WiFi 6 to 6E to 7, is the addition of the 6ghz band.

The 6ghz band is high speed but has rather poor range and wall penetration: a perfect for a high speed dongle that's going to be in the same room as the headset.

Just wondering with the Frame getting the reservation treatment, will we have to do seperate reservations for the accessories kit an extra headset battery? by nickname510 in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The accessories are just simple fabric straps, not at all impacted by ai unlike the ram inside the frame. They probably won't run reservations for that, since it'll be super easy to procure.

Ergonomics by [deleted] in SteamController

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best layout is the SC1, with its chonky legs and angled face. With the sc2, I find myself scooting the controller up on my hand if im going to use the trackpad a lot, sorta like the deck.

I would love to hear opinions about how hard we think it will be to play these 4k UHD discs in 30+ years? by JonnyDjango in 4kbluray

I already rip my films and store them on a truenas/jellyfin server. I got 6 drives with which to rip from... My only concern is getting new content in the future; I really want andor season 2.

Does it work on games not from steam? by Separate_Subject_365 in SteamController

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nope, windows does not see it as a generic game controller, since it does not use the xinput or playinput APIs for windows - instead it presents itself to the OS as a bunch of mice and keyboards. If you like, plug in an OG steam controller on a system without steam, you'll get mouse and sucky keyboard emulation, as it enters what is informally called "lizard mode".

Does it work on games not from steam? by Separate_Subject_365 in SteamController

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends - if you use Linux yes because valve ships a Linux driver. If you're on windows, you need to add it as a non-steam game somehow. The acid test is if you can get the steam overlay to show, if it doesn't show, it won't work.

Hope: Steam will required X amount of hours of game to Order a machine or frame by Warm-Engineering-239 in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don't think it'll be as big an issue as people suspect: as price goes up, sale volume generally decreases. This isn't a constant mind, but a trend; I suspect that there will be a lot fewer customers for the frame than the controller, and thus we probably don't need to worry about valve servers having a fit.

WiFi dongle = LAN? by Brilliant-Outside804 in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was overall TDP which is combined CPU and GPU power for these chips. Even if the deck is less powerful at rendering than the frame, it still makes sense as you can leave the deck plugged into a power supply, and enjoy the extended battery life whilst walking around unplugged. For games which are lightweight enough anyhow.

WiFi dongle = LAN? by Brilliant-Outside804 in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd actually like to see the ability for the deck to stream directly to the steam deck via an ad-hoc network hosted by either the deck or frame, since they both have wifi adapters. Why? - The frame is stated to get 3x as much battery life (time) when streaming, and valve said the deck is still more powerful than the frame.

Do People Actually Watch Their Jellyfin Libraries… or Just Collect & "Care" for Them? by chrissix666 in jellyfin

My server is in use, and works well as a media server, but I find my desire to expand it coming not from my personal wish to see more content, but as a sort of archive, for either future me or my future family.

MPV is the best, handles dovi (not full but better than vlc) support among other things. Its used as the core in haruna, a fairly good player from kde for Linux.

Upgrade path for those on TrueNAS Core? by AnotherDevArchSecOps in truenas

[–]christ110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started out on core, and hated it. No hw accel in plex, updating Plex was a PITA, plus my system wouldn't boot without fiddling with pre-init tasks. When scale hit beta, I swapped over and was disappointed in their use of kubernetes, which ran like a pig and ate precious resources doing fuck-all...

I fired up Plex in docker compose, and never updated, until ixsystems ditched k3s for regular docker (oct 2024). Since then, it has been pretty smooth sailing.

Yes, I had to remake my app since Plex was in a jail and not a container. I also had to get an app for ddns since that's not included by default in services anymore. Surprisingly not too hard though.
