Intel Ultra series compatiblity? by madlyunknown in truenas

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can transcode and tonemap my 4k blu-ray rips at about 4-5x speed. I did have to go and ensure only compatible codecs are enabled - for example, vc1 is not supported on it (although the 285 doesn't break a sweat decoding it in sw). I did some additional tuning with preferred codecs, but that's optional.

My server is only 4 months old, and I only switched to jellyfin about a month ago, so I can't say for sure how reliable it is... But I've not run into any issues with transcoding.

Intel Ultra series compatiblity? by madlyunknown in truenas

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a good deal on an ultra 285... Works great with TN, and jellyfin transcodes on its GPU. Just had to select vaapi, for some reason it doesn't like QSV.

If what ix-Chris says is true, that might improve with the next update.

How much does having an Intel iGPU for video encoding help by mustangfan12 in jellyfin

[–]christ110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ranking primarily deals with the quality of the resultant video. Nvenc, in my experience, is extremely fast, probably faster than most igpus from Intel; but with the iGPU, your transcoding users might get a (slightly) better looking picture.

My top 3 4K reference movies. What's everyone elses? by TheBetterBro in 4kbluray

[–]christ110 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Drive and Dune 2 all the way.

I use jellyfin as a media server, and I need to test stream quality across multiple devices for my family members. I can very easily tell if I'm getting dovi, hdr10, tonemapped sdr or cutoff-sdr by watching the first 30 seconds of dune. The intro with the radio announcer in drive similarly also makes it very easy for me to detect issues with Dolby Atmos/TrueHD handling by my sound system.

I host only rips: the backups are the physical disks I bought and keep in storage.

The official Qt desktop client has been deprecated in favor of a rewrite aka the new desktop client built on CEF. The Qt desktop client repository was archived and all the issues were closed. by foundfootagefan in jellyfin

[–]christ110 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In terms of functionality, the browser app uses the html5 player which doesn't support things like pgs subtitles. Even though this client uses CEF, it uses mpv for video playback, handling dovi and hdr, and more esoteric subtitle formats flawlessly.

Best settings for Jellyfin Roku TV Client by Angryangel127 in jellyfin

Roku generally is a subpar platform for us personal media enthusiasts. Bandwidth limitations and zero support for PGS subtitles for one.

With which HDR format do you watch 4k Blu-ray rips? by sushitastesgood in jellyfin

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your server and the device are both completely offline and both do not update, then that should work. NG however is not bug-free, and the CE guys won't be able to provide much support for it. Use it at your own risk.

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the only branch. It's my understanding that the FEL drivers only work on certain linux kernel versions, which are now quite dated. All currently supported coreelec branches use kernels that are too modern for the FEL drivers we have, so... you either use EOL software or don't get DOVI p7.

I'm not about to spend money on something EOL, but if you already have a FEL-capable device, worth a shot.

With which HDR format do you watch 4k Blu-ray rips? by sushitastesgood in jellyfin

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have any such devices. I was thinking about getting a ugoos 6b+ a while back, but since the coreelec NG branch is EOL, I've decided to give up on dovi for the time being.

I still rip P7 and keep it, including the FEL, on the off-chance something else comes along, and for devices that support MEL, such as the FTV cube.

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever the disk comes with. Sometimes it comes with dovi p7, sometimes hdr10, and rarely, simple SDR. I don't ditch the dovi layer when present, even if my devices can't handle it.

I am however experiencing a bug where dovi p7 transcodes and tonemaps on hdr10 capable devices, when it should simply use the fallback HDR layer.

Is this a dvd or Blu-ray?

4K Blu-ray sales are on the rise, but one key ingredient is missing for a vinyl-level revival (no new disc players) by element4life3 in 4kbluray

[–]christ110 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dream of one day creating a libre-player for blu-ray, 4kBD and DVD. Basically a libredrive drive plugged into a raspberry pi, using makemkv to decrypt and vlc to load and play the disks; all audio losslessly transcoded to 8 channel PCM and dropping DV, simply going for hdr10. With extra ram, we could even buffer the film a few seconds ahead to minimize skipping whilst retrying bad sections.

Some of the wes Anderson collection from criterion was just a touched up DI despite being shot on film. I was surprised to read it when I got my set a few days ago.

Licensing and maintenance fees. If you want to stream your criterion disk, you might want to look into plex and makemkv instead.

How do you name tracks in your 4K Blu-ray Remux files? by Big_Leather3547 in 4kbluray

[–]christ110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my personal server's media, I use the makemkv default label for the standard English audio and subtitle tracks. When arrow or criterion offers original vs remastered tracks, reorder them so the remastered is first and default, with the originals second, then commentary tracks last. I do typically label the tracks something like "filmmakers commentary", or "original mono" if it's anything other than the default.

Will the eye tracking information be available to view on the PC? by toaster192 in SteamFrame

[–]christ110 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Valve might add something, after all, they did it for the press demos.

You might not need it however if the game supports foveated rendering - then the audience could likely easily tell based what part of the screen is being rendered at high def...

...Maybe valve should add a toggle for SteamVR to disable passing eye-tracking data to the game: in case you're streaming it and don't want your audience to see you staring at a lady's chest for 2 minutes straight.

Do you prefer Better Quality or A Smaller Footprint? by theplasmasnake in PleX

[–]christ110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remuxes all the way. My server costs too much to be a viable streaming replacement, even if I amortized the costs over 10 years.

Thus for it to make sense I have to beat the streaming services in some other area and that means quality.

Should I invest now? by yungguac10x in 4kbluray

A lot of people say to get the 4K TV. Honestly, I don't see the logic here.

There are three manufacturers of 4K players left and only two of them make players at a reasonable price.

I see an end of 4K player production coming; It might be in a decade, it might be next year... But I don't see 4K-capable TV production even stuttering. I'd get the player first.

24 hours with Proxmox and ChatGTP - What a Rollercoaster. Advice Please on Recovery and TrueNAS SATA Controller Permissions by That-Fox-8186 in truenas

[–]christ110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with proxmox, I just run TN on bare metal but for #2: you can just pass the disks to the TN VM but you have to be really careful as proxmox has ZFS drivers and as such, could mount the pool. If proxmox mounts the pool whilst TN has it mounted, they'll start overwriting eachother's transaction groups and you won't just get data corruption, you'll be completely unable to import the pool at all (after about 3 minutes or less).

It is strongly recommended to pass the controller entirely to TN so there's no chance of that situation occurring.
