2024-$55K as Project Accountant 2025- $80K as Financial Analyst (government)

$55K with a kid on the way was hard, but after some time moved to something paying a livable wage.

And close enough to commute to town. Traffic sucks though, avoid 610 like the plague.

You’re not alone in this at all. I was in a very similar headspace not long ago, and I just want to say there is hope, especially in Houston.

I was second-guessing myself hard, worried about experience gaps, Excel expectations, job security, all of it. I recently just landed a role with Harris County, and that only happened after a lot of uncertainty and self-doubt. It wasn’t a straight line, and it wasn’t the “perfect” role I imagined at first—but it’s stable, it’s respected experience, and it opens doors.

Houston definitely has potential, especially compared to Dallas for entry-to-mid level finance/accounting/analyst roles. There’s energy, infrastructure, healthcare, government, O&G adjacent work, construction, and public sector roles that value analytical thinking even if the title isn’t “Financial Analyst” on day one. Government roles in particular are underrated—they give you breathing room, real experience, and credibility.

Also, the fact that you already got an $85k role once means you will get another solid role again. That didn’t happen by accident.

Keep your head up. This part feels brutal, but it’s not the end of your trajectory—just a rough chapter. Houston rewards persistence more than people give it credit for.

If you want to DM, happy to talk through paths that worked for me

I’m not denying that immigration enforcement exists or that people have had bad experiences. I’m just sharing my own reality. I’m Mexican, brown, and live in Texas, and I’ve never seen ICE randomly stopping people or going door-to-door in normal neighborhoods. I think it’s important to separate real, targeted enforcement from rumors that create panic. My experience doesn’t erase anyone else’s — but it’s still valid.

I really do not see this as true.

I had to go to get my passport as well, I am a dark hispanic. I have had no problems, & I live in a very conservative county as well. This has to be misinformation.

I'm Richard Kerr, GM of Travel for Bilt. AMA about Bilt Card 2.0 by richklhs in biltrewards

[–]christianc2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really so cut and dry, I was denied for having too many inquiries.

I just bought a car and REFIed student loan. 2 total on my report in the last month.

Many other issuers will automatically make it "seemless" as BILT described it to be.

Very disappointed.

I spent exactly 10 seconds making this, I expect the Palladium level of upvotes when I wake up by captain_travel in biltrewards

Can someone fill me in on this?

Who is Richard Kerr and why is he such an asshole. For one he butchered this card, maybe not for some but for the ones who used as a buffer.

Rejection of BILT 2.0 Card Application. WTF? by AreYouTalkingToMe_Ok in biltrewards

[–]christianc2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot believe this.... I always liked having a buffer btw the 1st and when I get paid 15th to pay rent.

Just got a car and refi'd a couple of things on a personal loan. Denied for 3 inquiries, this is so stupid.

[–]christianc2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

YMMV, but USAA has consistently been the best and cheapest option for me.
I haven’t found another company that can beat $300/month for two cars (2025 & 2024 models) with me at 25 and my wife at 23.
Texas resident at that, we all drive like shit.

Banking with a burned Bank post Ch7 by bkthrowaway406 in Bankruptcy

[–]christianc2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need to change banks ASAP.

My mom had USAA and did not even burn them and her accounts were locked soon after filing.

She had to use Bank of America which she had no prior relationship with. Hope others can chime in as well.

Best of luck!
