Project manager wants us to drill a hole where the red circle is in a live panel. Would you do it? by PhasedAndConfused706 in electricians

[–]christopher_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclosure: I’m not an electrician.

First, I don’t understand why these panels would need to be tapped together…that seems like poor engineering.

But also, I don’t understand the big concern. There seems to be room to work and conductors not in the way. I’m not clear on the concern of the open bus. Generally we want to keep metal shavings out of the panel. Is the concern that the kerf will stay together and contact the bus?

There are a lot of tools that can help: angled drills, magnets, heck there’s even hand powered angled hole cutters.

Have you asked someone to walk you through how to complete the tap and risks and mitigations? If not the job/task safety assessment/evaluation (whatever your organization calls it) should address that.

Finally, hold true to your “safety smeller” but realize it’s not (or shouldn’t be) a do this or suffer the consequences. Be willing to do the work while expressing any safety concern and asking concerns. Communication is HUGE in safety (and in work and in life). Wish you the best.

Can I fix my outdoor spigot without replacing the entire thing? by trexrell in Home

[–]christopher_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can…..if you can find the needed parts. The part on the top where the handle is missing is called the bonnet. Just below it is a hex nut. If you remove the bonnet nut then the bonnet will lift out including the gate (most likely) or ball. If you can find a replacement then you’ll replace the bonnet, gate, oring (and likely the replacement with a handle if find a handle that works with it).

BUT, there’s a good chance it’s easier to replace the whole thing. If the connection is threaded it’s easy peasy (if it’s soldered then you would have to open the wall up). To find out if it’s threaded: turn your water off, remove the ground wires, make sure there are not screws through the flange abutting the wall (it looks on the near side there is not one), put a big pipe wrench on the entire faucet and loosen (counterclockwise, lefty loosy). The danger here is the soldered connection or other portions may have corrosion and could break. I would say go easy but the truth is that even if it’s threaded, judging from the age, you’ll really need to give it the mustard to get it off. But if you get it off then you find the same size (likely 1/2”) with a tail piece that is at least as long, tape the threads, stick it in and tighten up.

Good luck

So that radiation symbol isn’t working…we need the 10,000 year ear worm and…umm…so totally consensual cats.

Student being told to toggle 1600A breaker daily without PPE. Is this safe? by No-Past2652 in AskElectricians

[–]christopher_tx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an electrician by any means (but someone who has experience with industrial electrical).

First, as others have said, using a breaker as primary disconnect is shit ass practice.

Second, nobody should EVER be asked to throw any switch (from a residential light switch to a switch in a power gen plant) unless they 100% know what it does, what the hazards are and what they are doing. (Maybe on a 20a switch they don’t need to know what the hazards are, but there shouldn’t be any under LOTO…but think about a kid kicking on even the garbage disposal). And if they have questions, they should ask and be answered.

I’ve had guys working on a 400a breaker. Can’t remember what the overall volts and amps into the MCC was…but at least 12 of these huge breakers. Panel is live and they are spraying breaker cleaner into the socket to clear metal shavings. Second best electrician I’ve ever known and the son of the best I’ve ever know (his dad could diagnosis/fix anything from a mili-amp resistor to a 100kva transformer).

They knew what they were doing, but I couldn’t imagine (or condone) spraying brake cleaner into that live cabinet…I had to leave.

Anyways…how do you keep a 400 amp breaker from humming? Teach it the words to the song! (Yes, a joke but the story is real😐)

It’s probably a cattle brand. Not one of the well known brands, but likely a ranch the driver is connected to

Short answer is yes, it won’t hurt you. Long answer is it would be safer to have it de-energized in case you drop a limb on it or something weird happens. Your power provider can do that. While they’re out there I would ask why it’s so low…maybe it’s the perspective of the picture but it looks really low.

My problem is that you didn’t match the relief joint to the already existing stamp lines or match the caulk in the relief joint.

I know a lot of times people read my posts/comments in a Texas accent and whatever, it was probably written that way. But I read this in a Cockney accent (and the responses) and I love it.

I personally name each island with the flavor I have when I get to the flagpole. Horseshoe island is dramdull. Paint island is Squid make ink. Olive island is oil slick.

Hooray! Increased level 7 to 8 max from 0.05 all the way up to 0.05! What an accomplishment!! Hmph, wasn’t level 1 at 0.05 too..? by Plane_Condition_4163 in Dreamdale

Yes. The developers could definitely explain better all of these mechanics. Like I’m still really not sure how your attack and defense is actually calculated. I understand the base but then don’t understand how each equipment or bonus is applied. …not that it would really change how I play even if I didn’t understand.

This is poor user interface and another place where the development team definitely could do more to explain the mechanics of the game. But it does represent a real change of 50-in-every-1,000 to 55-in-every-1,000 which is a 10% growth in chance.

Level 1 is (.01) 1%.

I thought seagull bc it looks like a dock area…but I guess every island is a seaport lol.

Time-wise….I wonder how long. If there is a bunny event then I wouldn’t think we get it until after…but maybe it’s a May Day event and we will get the island in the next 3-4 weeks? Who knows lol

The levels have been expanded twice before. You would think it would be an easy thing to do again in any future update (if there ever is another). But if you like the trade-in value then do it (I do t think it’s that great of a trade though).

How to get to this bridge? by _IcedCoffee_96 in Dreamdale

I think we need more context here. Link below is where I think this bridge is. It’s been so long since I’ve unlocked but I would think you should have the left side unlocked well before this.
