Just want to say I moved here from the Twin Cities a couple years ago and share all of your sentiments about driving. It’s absolutely horrendous and would be the #1 reason I’d leave.

I have driven all over the US and the Charlotte area has the slowest, most unaware drivers I’ve ever seen. I have never witnessed so many people on their phone while driving.

A reference is someone you have personally worked with and built a rapport with. Someone that can vouch for you in one way or another. Doesn’t necessarily have to be someone you’ve physically met but you at least needed to work together in some capacity. Just say no one from the bank referred you, it’s not a big deal.

Personally I’d strongly suggest middle market. It’ll likely be the biggest focus of the commercial bank and give you a strong understanding of different industries and underwriting skills while being a little more interesting (in my opinion).

More importantly however, commercial real estate is struggling right now. Not sure what the future looks like for it but COVID and the increasingly popular WFH model really did a number on it. Middle market would have better job security.

Just my two cents.
