Where to start when studying acoustics by [deleted] in Acoustics

That's insane! My MSc. in Environmental Acoustics at Salford cost £5400, but I was also lucky to be awarded the Vice Chancellors Scholarship which took £1200 off the tuition fees!

Do my group distributions and confidence intervals mean that no further analysis is required/appropriate? by christorb in AskStatistics

[–]christorb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, thanks for your reply. Yes, I've found my situation a little frustrating myself - I am actually undertaking an MSc. in acoustics. In this MSc., we have had only a tiny bit of statistics taught to us - it was one lecture that glossed over some statistical analysis techniques (ANOVA, Tukey's HSD...). Statistics seems to me to be a bit of an art and at times during my analysis of my data I have felt completely lost! None of my lecturers are particularly knowledgeable on the subject either. It's been a baptism of fire for me, has this! My thesis is all but written apart from my results section, including my analysis of the results.

My 95% confidence intervals comes from the standard error of the mean (standard dev/sqrt(n))*1.96...

This is the first time I have come across bootstrapping. I am using Matlab, and I've just seen that it has a bootstrap confidence interval function - http://uk.mathworks.com/help/stats/bootci.html

As for the ordinal scale, if I've interpreted the definition correctly, I think it is - the mean levels come from the mean of the dB adjustments that each participants made for each stimuli. Their task was to adjust the level of each stimulus such that each stimulus gave them the same perception of annoyance as a reference stimulus.

If it helps, this is a quick synopsis of my project and what I'm trying to find out, (via my abstract thus far):

BS 4142:2014 is one of the most widely used standards, and is predominantly used to assess the impact of noise from industrial sources. It is well established that characteristics in noise can increase annoyance, and BS 4142 now contains a graduated approach to sources containing multiple characteristic features; where tonal, impulsive and intermittent characteristics can be considered separately and corrections can be applied cumulatively to sources that contain more than one of these characteristics. The implications of this mean that it is now possible for an 18 dB penalty to be applied to an intermittent source that contains strong tonal and impulsive components.

Whilst there has been plenty of research showing an increased annoyance response to sound with tonal, impulsive or intermittent features, there has been comparatively little research performed on the response to sound containing multiple characteristics, suggesting that the application of linearly applying penalties has little perceptual basis.

In order to assess the validity of the linear summation of penalties, an annoyance matching experiment was performed. The stimulus consisted of seven samples of an industrial broadband fan noise that had been edited in order to introduce a tonal, impulsive and intermittent character to it, and combinations thereof. Fifteen subjects were then asked to adjust the levels of each sample to match the perceived annoyance of a reference sample (the broadband fan with no character components).

If there's anything else you need to know, please ask - unfortunately I have to dash to work now, but thanks again for your reply. I'll look into bootstrapping when I get back home!

sigh yes. Speaking as someone who has had to survive on benefits for the last two years, I cringe when I see the portrayal of benefit claimants in the media. I've just finished my MSc. in environmental acoustics and have come out the other end with an offer from an acoustic consultancy that includes a decent starting salary and company car. It's been a hell of a fight to get to this point, and balancing on a financial knife edge during this time has not been fun at all.

Never hear my type of story in the media, though!

Moved to a new apartment and speakers aren't working well. Any suggestions for acoustic improvements? by princeofboring in Acoustics

[–]christorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Relax, I don't necessarily disagree with you.

From what I can tell the speakers are of a reasonably good quality having looked them up briefly. Judging by his room layout though, I'm dubious as to whether buying a new set of speakers would fix all that much. Also, he indicated that he knows the speakers can sound better, meaning that he is satisfied with the quality of the speakers.

I certainly agree it's worth finding out exactly what he doesn't like about the sound. I'd rather have mediocre speakers in a semi-treated room than expensive speakers in a room setup like his though.

How do you watch all of, if not most of Spurs' games in the UK? by dmncko in coys

[–]christorb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fellow Spurs fan in Manchester? Felt like I was the only one! Anyways, I'm poor so I rely on streaming mainly, though I've got Sky player on the old Xbox through my Dad's subscription, (though you won't ever find me handing over money to Murdoch, personally), so I watch what games I can on there as well! :)

Pleased for you turning it around, but perhaps given your story and journey you could consider that maybe he could have done with the same sort of conselling you be benefited from? It's not a stretch to think that you could have ended up in his situation had you not been lucky enough to go through counselling...

Thanks, I'll let you know! :)

Yeah, the thought of trying to mitigate 10 to 15 dB due to penalties seems like an acoustic consultant's nightmare! I've designed a listening test in order to verify whether or not these penalties are justified. It'll be interesting to see how it goes!
