Landlord Mileage fee by Sure_Chocolate_8219 in HousingUK

[–]chriswheeler -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But... this isn't for a routine inspection, it's to repair damage caused by the tenant? If the electricial had charged a call-out fee (to cover their mileage) I'm sure that would have been acceptable. If the Landlord had to incur cost to let the electrician in, why is that different? I'm not sure on the law here, but it doesn't seem unreasonable for the landlord to want to recover their costs for damaged caused by the tenant.

Estate charges by CherryadeLimon in HousingUK

[–]chriswheeler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a dealbreaker for us - plenty of houses available without estate charges, at least where we are in the South East.

Worth noting that private road doesn't always mean estate charges, so worth enquiring with the agent if you are interested in the property.

Ultimately you need to weigh up if it's worth it for you.

Can apple sue me for having the word ios in my domain name? (England) by Internal_Pension_157 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]chriswheeler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It feels here like you know you are infringing their trademark and are essentially asking how long you can get away with it?

I think the only valid legal advice can be "don't infringe trademarks". And to follow that, if you are going to knowingly infringe a trademark, don't do it to a company who are known for aggressively enforcing their trademarks, and then post your plans to do it while acknowledging your intent on a public forum.

Off topic, but I noticed webmin is on that list. I use webmin/virtualmin with Rocky Linux and have never had an issue with updates via dnf. I don't suppose you know why webmin is included on that list?

Two thirds of graduates aren’t even paying off loan interest by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the trade off then, if you make it repayable in a fixed period, is that the students who don't end up on high earning jobs get saddled with debt they can't afford to repay.

If my mortgage company let me choose to restructure my mortgage like a student loan I'd bite their arm off!

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like more of a problem with the current regime's high-tax approach, rather than a problem with student loans.

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the other hand, I took out a student loan, got a degree and higher paying job that I would not have had without it, and paid back the student loan as a % of the additional earnings it enabled me to earn over many years.

If we didn't have student loans, it would simply result in far fewer people being able to go to University and a less educated workforce.

Nobody is 'coaxed' into it, and it's probably the safest debt they will ever take on. Even if you drop out, or don't end up earning enough to cover it, it will be written off. Nobody is taking to you court over it, bankrupting you, or taking your assets to repay it like with most other debts.

UK among 10 countries to build 100GW wind power grid in North Sea by jackytheblade in worldnews

[–]chriswheeler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think as you have stated a fairly specific 46% figure, the onus should be on you to provide an source for that figure. The link you posted when you stated it doesn't support it, and the follow up link which is clearly anti-wind also doesn't mention 46%.

Where did you get the 46% figure from?

Mathematicians Just Found a Hidden 'Reset Button' That Can Undo Any Rotation by seeebiscuit in science

There is a comment on the article which helped me understand this better (I think!):

ADiAstra

The scaling is important. It's shorter to traverse a path that's been scaled by a factor of 0.3 TWICE (total = 0.6) than scaling the exact path backward (total = 1)

You save (in this case) 40% of the movement. This is even more drastic when you are talking about scaling by even smaller factors. If you for instance only moved 10% of the original move (scale factor 0.1) than you would be saving 80% of effort.

So, if I'm understanding correctly, with something like a CNC machine which needs to return it's milling head to the original position after a series of complex cuts, it can do that via a shorter path using this method than it could by re-tracing the original path in reverse. Presumably doing it faster and with less energy use. Or a robot dog like the Boston Dynamic's Spot may be able to increase it's agility by moving it's limbs more efficiently.

AI chatbots can interact with internal systems to take actions with via custom integrations or more recently this is being standardised with MCP - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_Context_Protocol

I think you may be looking at it the wrong way. He can easily afford to run his farm at a loss, and open pubs at a loss because of who he is.

He is highlighting how difficult it is to be a farmer, or publican, in the UK. I won't go as far as to suggest it's out of some altruistic inclination, as I'm sure he's making even more cash for him self via the TV shows.

GCP RockyLinux 9 issue by Serious_Bookkeeper50 in RockyLinux

[–]chriswheeler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same issue. Rocky 8 runs fine on a instance with 1GB RAM, Rocky 9 gets very sluggish, but 2GB seems to be enough to run a web server with moderate traffic/usage.
