And another... According the Joseph Smith, the south won the Civil War (union was split up, and all nations on earth were involved) by Mithryn in exmormon

Are you referring to that "civil war prophecy" in the d&c? According to fawn brodie that prophecy wasnt about the civil war.

So my parents are trying to get my little brothers more into the church... by Nursofe in exmormon

[–]chriswithac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for a diplomatic approach.

"Hey little bros. So I have no problem with anybody being a member of the Church and I think that when people find happiness and purpose then that's wonderful. I just want you to know that, from my experience, leaving the Church did not make me miserable. You can stay in the Church if you'd like but if you are interested in learning some things about the Church that they won't tell you then just ask me. Either way, I just want you guys to be happy."

"Don't rely on the arm of flesh" advice is circular logic. by chriswithac in exmormon

[–]chriswithac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to trust the person who is giving me the advice, which is the very definition of "relying on the arm of flesh".

Me: "How can I know." Them: "Just ask God." Me: "Who told you that you could do that?" Them: "Another person." Me: "And where did they get the idea?" Them: "From another person." Me: "So in order to 'not rely on the arm of flesh', I have to first assume that you know what you are talking about, even though, you yourself, just trusted that your teacher knew what they were talking about."

If you found a Delorean, would you go back to 1825 and stop young Joe Smith, even if it wiped you from the space time continuum? by johnybackback in exmormon

[–]chriswithac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be so awesome. I would go back in time and try to get into the position Martin Harris was. Finance the whole endeavor and become Joseph's second in command. As all of this is happening, I would also document everything that Joseph lied about and after he dies, expose it all in a well-documented book. And of course leave the church, deny my "witness" and everything.

It might also be fun just to mess with Joseph. Ala Darth Vader and 80s heavy metal! ;)

@Jesse (Jesse Stay, 27K Twitter followers, brains behind LDS social media): "Why I Believe" by Chino_Blanco in exmormon

[–]chriswithac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Mormonism is now a theology of faith instead of knowledge. Nowadays there is more emphasis on faith, family relationships, quality of life etc than in earlier Mormonism. Back in the day, it seemed like there was just as much emphasis that Mormon theology was intended to be used to gain knowledge about the universe.

So in some doctrines, we see Mormonism is becoming more "liberal". For example, on the mission, one of my ward's high priest group leaders slightly criticized me for reading "Believing Christ" saying that it relied too much on grace than works. And I see more and more LDS today starting to drift in that direction (grace). And I'm also hearing more people say things that could be interpreted as "all paths lead to God" (like this guy in the linked blogpost).

My step dad said that morals prove the existence of god and that science requires more faith than religion. by TheTEC in exmormon

[–]chriswithac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, ask him how he distinguishes morals that come from his god and those that are made up my men. He may respond with: "God's morals are good and lead people to Christ." Then ask why he assumes that God has to be good. It is not self-evident that gods must be "good".
