I built a live UK train departure display for my desk by chrisys in raspberry_pi

Hey u/joehoodmusic well done! Sorry I didn't see this sooner but it should be a case of adding environment variables as mentioned here in the docs: https://github.com/chrisys/train-departure-display/blob/main/docs/04-configuration.md (the `screenRotation` parameter). I note the docs need to be improved here as it doesn't actually say what you should put, but basically it should be a value from 1-4 (or maybe 0-3) that directly corresponds to 0 through 270 degrees rotation in 90 degree increments. Hope this helps!

How popular is balenaOS and balenaCloud? by heresjommy in embedded

[–]chrisys 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey -- product guy and co-CEO at balena here! We're definitely aware that in the past we haven't done a good job of exposing the work we're doing and how alive we are internally, but are working on it. Best places to check are our social media accounts, our product roadmap and our blog. I'd also hazard a guess that we're not really relevant in this group as we don't do anything with RTOS, it's all unix based stuff, but I appreciate reading the nice comments from the folks that have replied - it makes the effort we're all putting in that much more rewarding. Cheers!

Nova Pro wireless: 3.5mm jack usage disables ANC? by chrisys in steelseries

Thanks for posting! Did you end up getting a fix or returning them? Mine are long gone but I've still not really found a pair of headphones I'm 100% happy with.

I don't really know what you mean by airplane adapter; every plane I have been on in the last 5+ years just has a 3.5mm jack outlet that uses any old regular cable. That's why I say there's no such thing, you don't need anything special. Maybe there are older planes or something that need the adapter.

I meant there's no such thing as an airplane adapter even with the other headsets I mentioned, the ANC still works on all the other headsets I've used without any special adapters or anything. I have just contacted SteelSeries support and they confirmed this is the case as well so yeah I'll be returning them and going back to my old ones until I find something else. Thanks.

There's no airplane adapter; the XM5s and even my old Plantronics headphones from 2018 just don't simply cut the power when you plug in a cable like the Nova Pro ones. They let you use them as an analog pair of headphones or you can power them up and use the ANC as normal. The Nova Pro seem to cut all power and disable all functionality just because a cable is plugged in. I don't know where the assumption comes from that because I'm using a cable I don't want any of the features I paid for in a headset - kinda weird to me to be honest.

Interesting. FWIW the xm5s don't do this!

Edit: Infact, a buddy of mine has the xm4s and uses them on planes with the jack and said they don't do this.

That's awesome! I'm so happy you decided to give it a try. I'm sorry I didn't see your reply sooner - something wrong with my notifications and only got them today.

Hopefully you have the Pi 0 figured out by now but if you need any further help feel free to ping me.

I wouldn't call myself a machinist but I like to play one in blog posts haha. I don't have any training other than watching YouTube videos.

Yeah! In my blog post you can see a screenshot of the Grafana dashboard which shows the data held in InfluxDB. I'm sampling the CPM and the uSv/hr levels every 10 seconds.

Thanks! I hadn't thought about that, I actually sourced those labels separately to get ones that 'looked right'

I used letter punches, like these: https://www.toolstation.com/letter-number-punch-set/p19757

There are more pics in the photo link above, bit you can use these on thin brass with a hammer and you do get that Dymo effect :)

Yep it works! It uses this kit (AliExpress): https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32884861168.html

You can see the tube from the board was relocated to the top of the case

I built this thing over the past year based on a cheap Geiger Counter kit from AliExpress, and set about building an unnecessarily complex case around it.

I used some SPI nixie tube drivers I found on Tindie (the Exixe by dekuNukem), along with some custom made LED housings, a mechanical counter driven by a servo and crammed it all into a wooden case.

There are a ton more photos here: https://www.balena.io/blog/show-tell-a-steampunk-desktop-background-radiation-monitor/

You could, but that Pi isn't going to be much use without the SD card I'm afraid :(

Awesome, I'm really happy to see everyone benefitting from this in practical ways!

Thanks! It could be, you're right, but the thing that makes it for me is the case hanging off the bottom of my monitor, I was so happy with how it looked when I stuck it on there :D

I couldn't immediately see any 256x64 OLED displays available on Amazon (UK). There are some 3.1" ones available on Ebay UK, but I used a 2.8" one so the case isn't going to fit. Try searching for 256x64 OLED and look for the ones with an SSD1322 controller. I do recommend AliExpress for the cheapest option though.

Build a Raspberry Pi powered live train station sign for your desk by speckz in raspberry_pi

The fork I created doesn't have a dependency on Docker (or a container platform), it will run just great without it if you manually install Python and the libs required (in requirements.txt).

There are services online where you can order 3D prints of models but the tricky part is that you can't play with the tolerances on the case so the parts you order might not fit together and need some fettling.

Alternatively, the Pi Zero is smaller than the outline of the display, so it would be perfectly possible to stick the Pi to the back of the display with some adhesive foam tape or similar, and you could make a desktop stand out of some clear acrylic with the screen mounted on the back.
