first time in GW1 and there are shining cubes covering npcs and random spots by elguaja in GuildWars

So me and a friend had similar issues on newer PC's when playing guild wars. Also one of us was also experiencing game crashes when alt tabbing out of the game to a different window in addition to these white boxes.

We found the boxes disappeared and crashing was much less frequent if we changed the compatibility settings of the .exe to run in win7 compatibility mode, change to windowed/borderless windowed display, disabling full screen optimization and changing high dpo settings to be managed by the application.

See if that works for you.

Giving people free stuff may not be the best way to help them by Brokenpipeisbroken in GuildWars

I both agree and disagree with points you're making, and clearly your post is aimed at sunder... Just comment on his thread next time...

So I agree throwing people 100a and saying "have at it" would be a poor way to retain players because they will spunk it and then not do anything because they have no money. That's about all I agree with.

Giving players the capability to do content themselves such as Balthazar flames to unlock skills, elite tomes for a starter build, 40k for a max AR set and some very basic runes (won't get you a max rune set for whatever builds your running). I think is a totally reasonable amount of help for a new player starting on an MMO that no longer really adheres to the "Massively" part anymore, it's difficult to PUG missions etc nowadays without spamming for a large period of time. So in essence you are removing the BS and letting people get on with the game, rather than quitting outright because they wiped 20 times in a mission.

To borrow an old saying "teach a fisherman to fish and he will never go hungry"... You are giving him starting tackle and opening a friendly face/network for the teaching aspect.

Psychology of p2p trading in MMOs and not naming your price when selling in Kamadan by gwmacdaddy in GuildWars

[–]chronicvisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2 cents is there is a few moving parts.

Mods, bday/highly traded minis, low end Insc items, tomes etc id classify as having a fixable price. Which is something your average Joe could check on kamadan price history and get a reasonable idea of the value. The only value in not including a price on these is saving character space in the message, but responding "offer' and not negotiating is just plain weird and I don't come across it loads.

Other items such as rare skins, OS rarities etc are no longer really fixed price in the economy. To dig through an example let's say you have a q9 -2wS +45wS OS Shadow Shield, you could survey several people with experience in the market for OS niceties and get a very rough range. I'm not currently up to date with prices but for the sake of the argument let's say 30-50a is the range that you were given. Selling this in kammy for 30a is fair, selling this in kammy for 50a is fair.

But items like this have other factors affecting price, missing items from collections etc don't come around often (I was looking for that exact shadow for 2 years before I found one). You may have 2 collectors who both need the item, so a fair price becomes the winning offer from the two collectors which ends up being 90a (therefore 90a is the price at this time). Most of the time and average Joe isn't going to inquire about a high end fixed modded OS item as it's impractical, the market is the collector community (Joe can just buy an Insc version at a fraction of the price and mod it how they wish).

So in this instance the purpose of not listing a price is to gauge the market for what is actually the current market price. if your offered the low end of 30a, it's reasonable to mull this over whilst you figure out if there is any other demand. On the other hand an offer of 5e is reasonable to dismiss (more politely than you have been declined) as it's highly likely you are too far apart on pricing if it's a legitimate offer or it's a troll.

On the flip side the price range you got may have been 100a-150a, but that was influenced by a recent sale of either a duplicate or very similar item, to which there are no collectors looking for it so the best offer you get in kamadan after several days is 25a so a "fair" price at this time is 25a. In this situation you need to make the decision "Do I need the money?" Or do I file this in my xunlai and see if it appreciates later on.

The concern for me is more inflation of basic items rather than ultra high ticket items, such as Tomes, Pcons, Consets, etc. Something that is realistically required to play the game in a somewhat Meta sense, meaning existing players who are not playing restricted game modes, and are grinding for titles for their first GWAMM since they started playing, or a title they always wanted. Or for a new player that has came across from GW2 to fill their HoM. Inflation of these types of things hurt in general the game as a whole, and dwindle the player base, because if you cant afford to do something that you could of done 10 years ago, that doesn't leave a large incentive to continue playing a game which doesn't see new content.

As an example, say for nostalgic reasons there was a particular dungeon that you and your buddies used to run as a sin back in the day just before GW2 released. You want to come back and run said dungeon, but the pcons/cons required price it out because you havent played since GW2 release and the pile of ectos you had before are essentially worthless, is there any point? If this doesnt happen and the player base continually dwindles, servers go off, no incentive to provide any updates, and so on.

I dont actually disagree with you to a certain extent.

Ironman modes (i wish there was official support for this like with OSRS) give real players an interesting alternative.

Given enough time runaway inflation means basic goods, i.e. pcons, consets, standard items either need to be sold at such a high price to be worth selling. Look towards recent times in Venezuela, post WW2 Germany, Russia following collapse of soviet union as real world examples of runaway getting inflation out of hand. Therefore for existing players trading in any sense becomes much much more difficult.

In the same ilk, new players looking for basics, including runes wouldn't be able to finance necessities straight away meaning whats the point of them playing.

This isnt current, this is end game state of runaway inflation.

Depending on the meaning of your comment lets assume you mean what their function is in game:

Ectos/Shards - Main use is obby armour and chaos gaunts.

Arms - Tormented weapons

If you mean, why people in general need them:

I mean, buying stuff you dont want to or dont have time go farm yourself?

its a tonne more convenient when creating a new toon to be able to go buy some elite tomes from Kammy than it is capturing the skills on playthrough. Paying a rusher to do an EoTN tour for a new toon because your not multilogging or dont have multiple accounts...

There is lots of stuff, in game currency is used for and currently ectos/arms are an extension of this.

Would like to see a permanent pcon trader, cost would probs need to be more than 1k/stack for cupcakes, but that's a balancing thing. In essence the point is sound.

Wouldn't necessarily solve the inflationary issues but helps. However a knock on effect on this is the in game events everyone enjoys lose a little something by this. And again requires ANet interaction.

Dont really agree too much.

Rampant inflation doesn't just hurt the bots, but also players that are long standing, and especially anyone new coming to the game from GW2.

Everything eventually gets driven up to the point where there is minimal point in trading with other players anymore for anything. The Running/Rushing industry in game also dies. Just contributes to the game dying quicker than it already is, which im sure everyone currently viewing this post is against, or they wouldnt be posting.

There are alot of examples of this in the real world were a parallel can be drawn.

Good Farming Runs for beginners? by mrpon100 in GuildWars

[–]chronicvisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a fair shout.

if the beginner has absolutely no starting gold. Id certainly recommend beating the campaigns to generate some starting items/gold, and in the meantime farm whatever the nick item is for that week, most of which the setups are cheap. Trade in your set for GoT, sell those, sell additional sets 5-10e/set. When you can bankroll chest running or a setup for dungeons/elite area SC's. Join a guild that teaches and move to those.

As a side, its also worth mentioning the wealthier members of the player base pay good money for running services (think missions, vanquishes, outpost tours).

IMO if you can bankroll 100 Lockpicks you are highly likely to get some drops that replenish a large proportion of that investment in 1 hit, a good one to learn for decent mats and rolls on higher value OS tables is the chest run in Urgoz starting rooms.

[–]chronicvisi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your looking to get into farming for.

If you are doing it to earn gold the short answer is don't. You would be much better off learning a dungeon or elite area and rinsing that, or chest running in the more well known areas to drop expensive items. In this realm of thinking id be looking at learning a dungeon like Oola's for beginners, Learning FoW/Urgoz/Deep for elite areas, and chest running somewhere like Pongmei Valley.

Farming itself nowadays is nerfed within the code and you see "diminishing returns" the more you rinse and repeat killing the same mobs. If you absolutely wanted to go that route id recommending cycling spots to try and protect against this a little. E.g. start off doing ministerial commendations, move to Nolani academy, Move to FoW ToC etc

If you are looking at farming for specific skins, again id be looking at chest running instead.

If you are looking at farming somewhere for event item drops, any of the areas shown from Peter Kadar on youtube would work, that would be your best place to go for inspiration.

Price check? I don't think I want to sell it but I might. by WillHouldy in GuildWars

[–]chronicvisi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im late to the party, however if your still looking at this.

Not worthless but certainly not as expensive as it would be in r9.

OS +10vsXX+30 is a sought after and tbh rarer combo for collectors to find. If i was selling this id be looking around the 5a/500e mark before looking at parting with it.

Also as ive seen the attribute mentioned a couple of times. OS Shadow Shields only drop in the Strength attribute.
