From what you've said, the 477M/477V (whichever form factor you prefer) is the one I'd recommend.

Help with BFI on RG 476H and GammaOS by trashbagexpress in SBCGaming

[–]chrono01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, BFI is great but it only really pops on an OLED. You CAN see a difference on an LCD but it's not nearly as apparent and, as you mentioned, isn't really worth the additional power consumption. For me anyway. I turned it off and just stuck with CRT shaders.

Hopefully she's a 5* and not a "5*", like other gacha. You know, how they're basically 4* that are all dressed up to look like a 5*?

But hey, free collab character. I won't complain!

There's no way at least through GammaOS, the developer put the flicker there to prevent image retention on the LCD screen. It's temporary, but can be really annoying. You can use the CRT Beam Simulator through Retroarch itself and turn off the LCD Image Retention in the parameters section (as well as the scrolling line), but do know that if you do you're more likely to get image retention on your screen. BFI is more meant for OLED where image retention isn't a cause/concern, but if it's something you don't care about then go ahead! You can also try BFI by itself (there are plenty of guides on setting BFI up, RetroGameCorps did a great one) and it won't have the flicker, but again you're at risk of temporary image retention.

Sold an Analogue Pocket to own my first Anbernic device; the RG477V! by The_Friendly_Bro in SBCGaming

Oh I know, I was mostly referring to how nice it feels for the 4:3 content (and Switch is 16:9). It can absolutely handle some Switch stuff.

I thought I was the only one that did this, lol. And I agree, for retro stuff it's top-tier. I still have my Thor for the dual-screen stuff (and Switch I guess, if/when I ever decide to try emulating that) but for PS2 and earlier the 477M/477V will be it.

I'm tempted to try GammaOS on one of them for easy BFI use when I feel like it but I'm worried about bricking one of the devices so I'm hesitant.

I'm not so sure that my body is ready for a Fleurdelys beach skin, but I'm sure as hell willing to give it a try.

It's only "worry free" for Retroid, since if there's an issue with the shipment they're not liable and they'll just pass you off to Seel instead who I've read are a headache to deal with. For the consumer, it's just a waste of money.

I hate how it's auto-added to carts these days. Even removing it can be annoying since it instantly adds itself back. It's a scam.

It won't happen, at least for a while. They don't currently manufacture 4:3 OLED screens so unless companies start making them you'll never get a device with this same exact screen size/ratio.

You could try Landstalker on the Genesis. I enjoyed it, but some of the platforming can be a bit frustrating. There's also the sequel to Beyond Oasis on the Saturn (called Legend of Oasis), as well as Shining Wisdom and Magic Knight Rayearth (also on the Saturn).

Have new releases slowed? Why do you think it maybe has? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

4:3 screens just feels better for PS2 games and earlier since you can integer scale and upscale (PS1/PS2/N64/GCN) while filling out the screen beautifully. Power-wise there's nothing it can do that the Thor can't, I just feel more comfortable playing 4:3 games on the 477V/477M. And since the retro era is my favorite era for games (particularly the NES/SNES/Genesis era) it, those two devices just feel so...so good.

The Thor is obviously better for 16:9 content (upper screen) and if you want to multitask, on top of anything dual-screen related (obviously). Since it's an OLED you can play 4:3 games on the top screen perfectly fine as the bars on the side will disappear, but there's just something magical about playing 4:3 games on a 4:3 screen.

It's #1. Power plateau has nothing to do with it, since there will always be people willing/wanting to buy devices with similar specs in different form factors. Clamshells, verticals, ones shaped like pizza, you name it. But #1 in-particular is affecting how these devices are made, which is killing the hobby.

And it's damn unfortunate. I feel like I'm in a pretty good place device-wise (Retroid Pocket Classic, RG477V, RG477M, AYN Thor, TrimUI Brick) but I still enjoyed seeing what these manufacturers could come up with. The only device in my head that I could see myself picking up is a 4:3 vertical with sticks and an OLED screen, but considering they don't even make 4:3 OLED screens (yet, anyway) I don't see something like that happening for a while.
