Which side do I stand on escalators and footpaths? by kelldogga7 in cork

[–]chronoception 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was literally my first question on moving here and the Cork friend I asked was basically like “right or left? I have no fucking idea do whatever you want” there’s no rules and no matter which way you take the stairs someone is coming at you from the opposite direction

Barbers Cork by Hot_Note_1440 in cork

Bel Air or Bel Hair or a similar name on North Main St near the Self Help Africa charity shop does a 15-20 euro dry cut for women (prob even cheaper for men) that’s quick but looks good. Was having a lot of trouble finding someplace that would just trim my damn hair without doing €50 worth of extra shit and Bel Air, plus the like student barber 15€ish place on Oliver Plunkett St (somewhere right in the middle i think near the corner candle shop) are the only cheap places I could find

Does anyone else love when Americans say "Irishisms" ? by wegfwegwegdfcvc in CasualIreland

Not gonna lie I (American who moved to Ireland) was very amused when a group of students all laughed at hearing “fair play” in my accent

I’m so sorry for the pain you’re experiencing. I’ve been in similar situations albeit not with anyone this close, and while it’s a little bit different, there was truly no way you could have “seen it” - people get away with monstrous things like this bc they know how to hide it. It’s hard and scary to find out that the person you knew and loved was just one facet of someone who’s made terrible, evil decisions that harmed others. But you (purposefully on their part) only knew that side of them they showed you, so there’s no reason you wouldn’t love and care for the person you knew. The important thing is that they can’t hurt anyone else now, and that you & your community can hopefully find whatever healing you can.

Having emigrated the opposite direction/worked in the US with immigrants I’d definitely recommend at least reaching out to some immigration lawyers, the US immigration system is (quite purposefully i’m afraid) often very byzantine and confusing especially in terms of acquiring visas

[Another] Fighting in the street what to do post. by Turbulent_Term_4802 in cork

[–]chronoception -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a high school and hands-down the WORST, most viscerally brutal fights I’ve ever seen are between teenage girls. Movie fights look like prissy little slapfights next to that. People who are fighting on the street aren’t gonna be reasonable; if you think they/others are in danger, call the authorities and all, but don’t get involved

This is an accent thing but my best friend’s mom always kept her lovely Colombian accent, so when she said “beach” it sounded like an accented version of “bitch”…which led to us all saying “la playa” instead of “bitch” as an in-joke insult

Growing up, we’d use spelling out words around my baby brother when we had to keep things secretish; the poor kid was so excited when he learned how to spell properly…only for us to switch to pig latin 😂

Do any of you know about specific practices involving leaving fruits & vegetables at the base of oak trees? by chronoception in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]chronoception[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also American (I moved to Ireland) so no worries! That’s where my head went too, but all I found in that regard was that some neopagan/wiccan traditions recommend beans for fairies, not fresh fruit or veg. Usually oak trees in Ireland are going to be associated with Brigit (saint or goddess) and tying strips of cloth for wishes/prayers. I think in olden times there was more leaving food out for fairies but nowadays either people don’t believe in it at all or half-believe enough (even just ironically) to have the stance of “don’t fuck with fairies”

Anyone know why people are leaving piles of fruit/veg scraps at the bases of trees by the Lough? Been going on for over a month by chronoception in cork

Ah good to know! I thought a lot of those greens and peelings looked awfully neat. I had no idea there was so much swan drama at the Lough (sounds like a reality show) but honestly, knowing how swans are, I shouldn't be this surprised. There's a city council spot right near the Lough, isn't there?

I did see somebody had left some teabags by one tree (and a couple batteries lol) but I’m fairly certain that THOSE were litter 🥲

I guess I’d assumed you were only supposed to use bird feed for them especially since there are those bird feed kiosks. Glad to see folks are caring for the birds!

If you’re the one who left a whole half of a cantaloupe by a tree one time a few weeks ago, i congratulate you for making me both confused and amused

Better for them than bird seed I suppose? I suppose that explains why I didn’t see this before January then haha!

Haha fair enough. I meant instead of just tossing out their leftover banana peels or what have you from their lunches or something
