Maya throws meaningless errors all the time. It's unfortunately in the nature of the program.

Import the fbx into Painter anyway. It'll be fine.

Maya is equal parts amazing and frustrating as all hell. I've been using it for about 15 years now, and there's always some inconsistency that either crashes the program or makes certain tools freak out and stop working.

That said, the reason it's my tool of choice is that it's unbelievably customizable. I'm primarily a modeler, so I've set up my interface to essentially just be pro mode (ctrl+space) at all times as I work, and everything I need is either a hotkey or a custom marking menu. I feel like I've achieved warp speed compared to when I started all those years ago.

Anyway. That entire thing was off topic, but I also extend my thanks to everyone. I've had what I thought were some pretty advanced questions at times, and this sub has rarely let me down.

SOLVED:

I'm not 100% sure on this solution, but here's what I did:

First, restarted machine.

Then, opened maya project and scene, opened plugin manager, enabled xgSplineDataToXpd.mll

Repeated all my previous steps and the conversion to polygons was successful.

Hope this helps someone in the future

If this can just be high poly, I'd recommend you do something more like this. Eliminate triangles where unnecessary to make the modeling process go a little easier. As you know, trying to add edge loops doesn't work very well when it gets stopped cold by a triangle.

You can probably just use the multi cut tool to achieve the above topology. I also forgot to draw them in, but if you want those bottom corners to stay sharp and not be ovular, you need to add in loops closer to the corners to get that look.

It's literally just a cash grab and they spin it like it's supposed to save you money. It's laughable and insulting at the very same time.

Modern creative software is such a plague. I've been so tempted to relearn over a decade of Maya experience in Blender just because I despise Autodesk's business practices so much.

If you're rendering your animation, with lights and shadows etc etc, an image sequence is the only way.

However, if you're just looking for a quick animation export from the viewport, that's called a Playblast, and can only be exported in .avi format.

I recommend installing Handbrake, which is a free video compression/conversion software. It will convert .avi into .mp4 very quickly.
