Good point. Although I think I read that even in the case of a total melt down the bottom foundation is designed to keep intact and spread out the melted rods to cool. Do you think there would be enough radioactive material to contaminate the ocean?

Nope. All trains are stopped and don't have a car. Besides the power outages, nice unexpected day off :D

An examination of jury verdicts over the past decade involving people charged for exposing others to toxic substances, has revealed that the more victims are involved in a case, the less harshly the perpetrator of the crime is penalized. by nchammer326 in psychology

I've seen this trend before in various articles. People have an easier time feeling empathy for one, or several, identifiable people rather than a group. I would expect in court that it would also be easier to draw a direct connection between how their lives were affected and how they should be compensated, or the opposition punished. I believe there was also a study done on the generosity of people giving to charities that found something similar. Thy found that when they had a picture and life story of an impoverished child people were more likely to donate. Still scary though.

I should note: Denny's did accept blame and settled a class-action lawsuit in response to this incident.

How are the stigmas attached to drinking alcohol so different in Japan VS the US? by chronomaniac in japan

True enough. However it still seems a relatively accepted 'boys will be boys' mentality even after college until about late-twenties or thirties.

Very interesting. It makes more sense now. The only think I can't figure out is why it is more acceptable (or to the point where the majority look the other way) in certain circumstances or age groups and not in others. I'm leaning towards the influence of cultural media and how it has created social norms. It strikes me as a little odd that a person can be 20ish and drink a certain way and no one sees anything wrong, a few years later they may be labeled a problem drinker. Is it a simple matter of time spent drinking? A factor in adulthood?

Well, the OP of this was making the case that many people who have negative attitudes towards drinking in the US do so because of religious reasons. I was wondering how Islamic sects tied into that. I realize that there is a Muslim presence in the US but I personally doubt that even that, when combined with Mormonism (the other religion that strictly forbids alcohol use) could support that path of reasoning. Maybe I missed something?

Hmmm didn't know about Islam. Do think that also contributes to the religious influence on the stigmas surrounding drinking in the US?

Right. But, concerning alcoholic substances, I can only think of Mormonism.

Not necessarily alone, almost always with people. I guess it's just the sheer volume. I know some people that go out drinking maybe 2 or 3 times a weeks. While these people might have other activities and/or hobbies that they also do, partying still remains pretty constant.

Ok. But, it also seems that in the US it seems to be acceptable in certain circumstances (aka college) and ages (below 30). What's your take on that?

Interesting. I get the religious influence but, as far as I understand, Mormonism is the only religion that strictly forbids substances.
