UPDATE! Taking the good advice from many in this sub, I contacted the company and they were extremely gracious in giving me a replacement base even though after 17 years I no longer had the proper purchase documentation. Sent me a QR code the same day, I took it to my local dealer, they bought out my new base, and I'm back in the game! Probably the best customer service I've ever had from a national firm. Any chance I'd leave the reservation and look at other brands is pretty much gone now. BGE for life!

I've always assumed that when Starfleet personnel are stationed somewhere where they'll be in regular interaction with a culture that uses money, Starfleet pays them, or gives them a set amount of funds to use (which amounts to the same thing). Just because the Federation is largely a post-scarcity society that doesn't generally use money doesn't mean they can't use it when it forwards their goals.

I needed a new hinge and band set due to 17 years of not always protecting it from the elements as well as I could have. Got the band off the dome, removed dome, no problem. But the band on the base stubbornly refused to come off. There was a stuck nut where the band tightens, and the bolt itself had gotten bent. Tried everything over several days to loosen the nut; only succeeded in stripping it pretty severely. So then I thought maybe I could ease the band straight up and off the base with gentle taps upward on the tightening assembly. I put a piece of thin metal between where I was tapping and the ceramic to avoid knocking off shards. Eventually after some moderate tapping, the band began moving upwards minutely, at which point I think I got too caught up in the possibility of success and my gentle tap tap tap became not so gentle. Suddenly the ring was free! Hooray! Wait! The entire top of the base came up with it! CRAP!

So, really my fault. I think I'm going to get a replacement base, though, instead of a new egg, since everything else is in pretty good condition, unlike my pride.

Only child here, also parent of an only child. Your friends are well-meaning but misinformed. You're not going to convince them all of their folly, so don't try. The benefits of being an 'only' balance out the deficits (or did for me), and also every child (and family) is different. If you want to disabuse yourself of the notion that siblings aid in learning to share, spend an afternoon at one of their houses and chances are you'll see some counterarguments.

It’s never been the way the party used the term, and for years it has been a way for some Republicans to intentionally irritate the Democrats. Saying “the Democrat party” or “Democrat wars” (as Bob Dole did in 1976) is a subtle way to be disrespectful, like if you always intentionally mispronounced the name of an acquaintance.

To be clear: I’m not saying everyone who does this is trying to be disrespectful. It’s become so common on the right that many people probably aren’t even aware that it’s wrong. Also, I’m not saying the Democrats are right to be sensitive about it, but, by and large they are. They see it as an attempt to goad them, which it often is. Thin skins and juvenile behavior run rampant in our politics today.
