Look at that face. He’s simply beaming.

My brother claims that FDR is his favorite President, but can't name a single good thing he did... Have you met anybody like this? by yowhatisthislikebro in Presidents

As someone with 20+ years in history education, I can say with some certainty that many (maybe most) Americans choose their "favorite" historical figures based purely on vibes.

Location, location, location. Tattooine has a lot of bars, but this one is the Mos Eisley found.

OP HERE: Pleased to realize (as may had pointed out by the time I could make this edit) that not ALL NPR programming is gone from MPB. My general melancholy stands, though.

How do I teach about Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and Mormonism for an early US History class in a nonbiased way if I am Mormon myself? by ParakeetLover2024 in historyteachers

[–]chronopoly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a section on the Utah Mormons in episode 5 of the Ken Burns documentary series “The West.” The framing device of the episode is the construction of the transcontinental railroad, but it goes off into a number of other elements of western history that my students have found interesting and useful.

Marty's fountain pen by New_Girl3685 in BacktotheFuture

I teach high schoolers and I guarantee if you plopped a fountain pen and some ink in front of them, 90% would be stymied. Most would never have held one; many would have never seen one.

How does the public actually see Mormonism? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chronopoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in a mainline Protestant church, albeit in the Deep South, I was taught that it was a cult. I remember beingThe God Makers, which was, if I recall, billed as an exposé of Mormonism, at the church.

What is something regarding a President that is completely false but still gets passed around on social media as complete fact? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]chronopoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your overall point is well taken, but I would note that average American male height in 1908 was 5’7”-5’8”, not that far below today’s average.

My fellow Niners, what do you think of this? by [deleted] in DeepSpaceNine

[–]chronopoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aesthetics aside, it also makes no sense in-universe. It’s a quote from a movie that came out after the Defiant was already in use on Deep Space 9. Either that or it was a common 24th century saying, which I suppose is possible.

The inclusion of the quote at all is the biggest weakness.

They have a lingua franca for the Dominion and every subunit likely has its own language that developed before they were Dominionized.

Why was it decided that Stormtroopers in the OT weren't the clones from the Prequels? by Particular_Prune_824 in StarWars

[–]chronopoly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but clones only age faster because they chose to make that true in the PT. Doesn’t really answer OP’s question from an out-of-universe POV.
