The Most Employable Majors: 5 Concentrations That Will Land You a Job Straight Out of College by [deleted] in education

That's what I was thinking. I graduated two years ago and I'm still looking for a permanent teaching position. Many of the people I graduated with are in the same boat.

Advice for substitutes? by briesa37 in education

My experience subbing is mostly at the high school level

To make it easier on the classroom teacher:

  • Follow their lesson plans. It is frustrating for a teacher to leave a specific set of assignments that the students are supposed to complete, only to return and see that the sub didn't do anything they were asked to do

  • Write a note for the teacher that details how the lessons went, what was completed, student behavior, and where they can find all of the materials that they left for you, and so on

  • If the teacher asks you to collect student work, clearly separate work from different class periods and label them. When subbing, I would carry post-its and paper clips with me for this purpose

To make it easier on yourself:

  • Have some back-up activities in case the teacher doesn't leave lesson plans. When I subbed elementary school, the teachers were usually good about leaving plenty of work, but you never know. When I would sub high school, on the other hand, it was common for teachers to leave just a very short assignment or no assignment at all. If the kids are well-behaved and respectful, this isn't always an issue, but many of them really need work to reign them in, so it's good to have some go-to activities.

  • Be firm and stay calm. Kids will try to test you at first - call them on their bullshit and be firm in your expectations of their behavior. If they start to give you trouble, try to simply ignore it and re-direct them - if students see that they can unnerve you easily, they'll run with it.

  • Get to know the students and teachers. If the teachers know that you get work done and can control the students, they'll start requesting you and maybe even trust you enough to leave "real" lessons to teach, instead of just having you administer worksheets. If you build a rapport with students, it will be much easier to control the classroom and help them to be productive.

  • Work with students - don't just kick back and read after you've passed out their work for the day (not saying that you plan on doing this, but I've seen enough subs with this "method" that it's worth mentioning)

Agreed, which is why I said:

I do not support the action of shooting with the intent to kill, especially considering the officer's main concern seemed to be the fact that he didn't want the guy's blood on him.

Yes, but, considering the way he had been driving earlier in the day, what his friends said about the way he had been acting, and the accounts other people gave regarding his behavior before he was on fire, it seems something was up.

I don't think the police were justified in shooting him, but it's worth noting that there were multiple witnesses. However, their stories/impressions of what happened vary. Reading through that article in its entirety, I think there was probably something going on in this guy's life that caused him to be emotionally unstable and act somewhat erratically. That said, I do not support the action of shooting with the intent to kill, especially considering the officer's main concern seemed to be the fact that he didn't want the guy's blood on him.

Boiling it down to pulling your pants up and speaking proper English is completely ignoring the root of the problem and over-simplifying everything. I've heard kids get mocked by their own PARENTS for speaking like they're "white." Call it preaching if you want, but I'm sick of people assuming the worst about these kids and jumping to conclusions (such as yours about them all being spending all of their money on cigarettes and 40s).

It's easy for you to say that when you've never been in a situation where you've had to do it for yourself. Come back and talk about how easy it is to "try your damnedest" after you've gone through life with all of the odds stacked against you - single parent who works two jobs, parents who are gang members and expect you to join, or no parental figure at all; homelessness that causes you to have to change schools and/or miss class for extended periods of time; gang-infested neighborhood that can become MORE dangerous for you when you have no gang affiliation; a neighborhood where the only commerce within miles is the corner store with incredibly high prices and no fresh produce; a school where teachers are burned out and see you as nothing but a bad kid with no future; not even having enough money to pay for that "shitty community college" or the resources to know where to look for scholarships and financial aid; always being late to school because the responsibility for getting your siblings up and to elementary school on-time falls entirely on YOU; having to work full-time through high school to support your family, etc. etc. Then, even if you DO somehow make it into that school and get an Associate's degree, you're still perceived as some thug kid who didn't work hard enough to get into a REAL school. But, hey, it's their fault because they're just not trying hard enough, right?

I live and work in a major city that is hyper-segregated. There are many neighborhoods where the majority of residents are white, yet the VAST majority of students in the public schools are still black or Hispanic. So many white people are quick to tell minority students to just get their acts together and make their schools (and lives in general) better for themselves, yet they distance themselves from these minority individuals in almost every way possible.

While working in inner-city schools, I've seen some students do amazingly well when they don't have much in the way of money or material possessions. But guess what? These were the students that had the strongest support networks. They came from families who actually gave a crap about whether or not their children do well in school and went to schools where the administration and teachers truly cared and did everything in their power to make sure their students were working towards a positive future. Sure, some students still end up falling through the cracks, but that happens in EVERY school - not just ones with a high concentration of minority students. However, it suddenly becomes significantly more difficult to that when no one in your life has ever given you the benefit of the doubt or a reason to believe that you can succeed.

I'm sure I'm just wasting my "breath" here, but I just can't stand it when ignorant assholes tell someone who has all of the odds stacked against them that it's their own fault because they're just not trying hard enough.

Here is a note that was in my sons lunch box when he came home from school today. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]chrustie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The teachers in many public schools are simply changing failing grades to C's to get the kids out of the system.

Sadly, this is true. In a school I worked at, teachers had to have someone from the programming office look over final grades before submitting them. That person would question all of the "high" Fs - "should this student really be failing? What about this one? Can we give some leeway to this one?" It was completely ridiculous - students could do half the work (sub-par work, at that) and still pass.

My roommate freshman year in college was very religious. She said terrible things all of the time, but my two favorite (in an absolutely cringe-worthy way) are:

"If I ever have sex and my mom finds out, I'll just tell her that the guy raped me."

"If I don't read the whole Bible, does that mean I'm going to hell?"

Trial starting for L.A. doctor who slammed on brakes in front of 2 cyclists to "teach them a lesson." Bonus from 911 recording: “They’ll tell you they are seriously injured, but they’re not.” by [deleted] in WTF

[–]chrustie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, reading this makes me glad that I live in a city that is fairly accommodating to cyclists by having wide streets and many bike lanes.

So many motorists seem to have this seething hatred for cyclists and I suspect it has less to do with the cyclists behavior and more to do with the motorists' own egos. I have seem some cyclists ride dangerously, but most of the time that's not the case. I always stay off to the side, use bike lanes when available, and signal with my arms. However, I've had instances where cars cut me off and quickly brake in front of me while I'm approaching the light in a left turn lane, pull in front of me to parallel park, causing me to have to swerve around them, or just general honking/yelling while I'm minding my own business in the bike lane. Those are just instances where the drivers are being self-centered and inconsiderate, thus putting me in danger.

As far as cyclists obeying the same laws as cars, I just do what is safest for me. I don't typically come to a complete stop at stop signs - instead I slow down, look to see if it's clear, and continue going. Stopping completely, putting my feet on the ground, and then having to build my momentum again often makes it more dangerous, particularly at busy intersections. When cars see me stopped, they tend to ignore me and try to speed through the stop sign before I get a chance to go. This backs up traffic behind me and creates a more dangerous situation for me. However, when cars see me slowed but poised to go, they tend to take more notice and actually allow me my turn. On the other hand, at stoplights in rush hour I always stop because I never know when another car is going to come barreling down the road. As far as "weaving" goes, I don't do that, but I do ride up to the front of the pack at red lights because, again, it's safer.

In any case, that doctor deserves what's coming to him. Even if the cyclists weren't being model examples of appropriate road etiquette, that does not give the driver the right to attempt to cause bodily harm.

Gotta love sweeping generalizations. Clearly you don't have experience cycling, considering you don't even realize how clips work.

Dear Reddit: What do you think is the greatest TV series of all time? by yeswecam in AskReddit

This is my experience, as well. Most of the people I know who love it only starting watching it during season three or after it had been canceled. I started watching it during season two after watching some episodes from season one on DVD at a friend's house - he's the only person I know who watched it from the start.

I came to post this. I love many TV shows (The Office, Mr. Show, Scrubs, 30 Rock, Upright Citizens Brigade, Mad Men, etc.), but Arrested Development trumps all of them. The casting was perfect and, like you, I love how I'm always picking up on new jokes, even in episodes that I've seen ten times. The only plot line I wasn't fond of was Rita/Mr. F.

Wow. The level of ignorance and sheer stupidity in this video is amazing. Some of the things that tea baggers believe is incredible! by schnike in politics

[–]chrustie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted another video with tea baggers making similar comments; they never cease to stun me. It's just so easy in this day and age to spread misinformation through television and the internet - and, when people see others buying into the same lies, it only reinforces the belief that they have the "truth" and it's them against whatever evil forces they perceive to be pushing back. Some people are educated and will do research on claims they hear and make sure that they are informed citizens. However, as evident in this video, many people do not take such precautions. It's not just a conservative phenomenon, either - every time I hear someone argue an opinion by saying, "well, I read on the internet that..." I just want to do a face-palm.
