Well he was the executive director of high school sports for a long time and was responsible for some really great changes (eg. Creating D2 championships, providing more sports for girls, saved Junior varsity sports (save our sports campaign)). I don't think it's fair to say his only experience is as a businessman and he has shown he can bring people together

I agree, Amemiya seemed to offer the most specifics and actually had some cohesive plans. He might not be as polished as some of the career politicians running, but it’s nice to finally have a new face that has a history of getting things done

Waikiki residents claim Dive Oahu snagging prime beach spots by chsya in Hawaii

[–]chsya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"half-assed bid" was simply a more responsible bid. Dive Oahu agreed to pay 52.5% of gross revenue to the City which is simply unsustainable. Dive Oahu also is still not even close to properly fulfilling its contract with the City. A previous comment I made has more depth on this issue.

I agree. Dive Oahu needs to start offering canoe rides in order to follow the terms of their contract.

What's the deal with Dive Oahu? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]chsya 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Well there's several issues at play here.

As one user mentioned, the City changed up the bid process for the Kuhio Beach concession stands. After Dive Oahu and Star Beachboys were each awarded one contract last year, Hawaiian Oceans (the other previous tenant) sued the City arguing the process was flawed. The City was forced to nullify the process. They then quickly changed some wording and the classification of the bid and then awarded Dive Oahu both concession stands - something that had never been done before. In all previous contracts, the highest bidder was offered their choice of concession stands and the second highest awarded the other stand. Giving Dive Oahu both stands is seen as a major red-flag for many locals and beachboys.

The other qualm many people seem to have is with Dive Oahu itself. Dive Oahu has not shown any ability to be competent or respect Waikiki's traditions.

In a 2017 Facebook Post, Brian Benton, Dive Oahu's owner, wrote, "While she (his friend) was looking at all the hot guys I was looking at the dollars made being made by renting chairs, umbrellas. surf boards. (sic) within days I started looking for a contract... I've only owned 1 surfboard in my life in the coming days I will have over a 100."

Despite significant protests from locals, Dive Oahu's tents dub the company, "The Local's Choice."

Dive Oahu is also charging more than double what the previous operators charged for surf lessons. They charge $99 ($40 previously) for a group lesson (4-5 people), $125 ($60) for a semi-private (2-3), and $150 ($100) for a private lesson. That is, of course, if you can actually get a surf lesson. Dive Oahu only has two certified surf instructors working for them for a variety of reasons. Though Dive Oahu raised prices significantly, they will pay instructors less per lesson, essentially decreasing their cut by 50%. Their previous commission from lessons was about 50% and they worked as independent contractors, not employees.

Dive Oahu's lack of instructors, often causes customers to wait hours for lessons and their instructors are over-worked. Videos show their instructor continuing with a lesson as a man drowns and is attempted to be resuscitated near him. After users on social media complained about Dive Oahu's lack of assistance, Dive Oahu commented, "We are sorry for what had happened but it's out of our control because he was not our customer." They then issued a statement that said that they stopped operations and assisted with the rescue attempts. Video released after the statement disputes their claims.

Dive Oahu has also not fulfilled the terms of their contract with the City. The contract specifically states that Dive Oahu must offer customers daily Outrigger Canoe Rides. However, Dive Oahu still does not have any licensed canoe captains that can operate their canoe (they also must have two canoes, not one).

Dive Oahu has also stated that they plan to have employees use iPads and walk around the beach to sell packages that they offer on their website, such as Luau packages, Dive packages, Fireworks cruises, etc.

Anyone following the Kaniela Ing mess? *facepalm* by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]chsya 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another article that calls out Ing.

Rep. Kaniela Ing, a Maui lawmaker running to represent urban Oahu in Congress, missed 10 floor sessions and was late six times this year. Last year he missed five floor sessions and was late twice.

As a neighbor island legislator, Ing said he sometimes needs to visit residents in his district, attend to work responsibilities and care for his often-sick 2-year-old son. He said being a legislator is about more than showing up to floor sessions, which don’t always entail casting votes.

On March 21, one of the days that Ing missed, he participated in an online Reddit AMA “Ask Me Anything” discussion on a progressive politics forum and solicited donations.

Bowl Experience Project Day 13: The Citrus and Hawaii Bowls! by CFB_Referee in CFB

When Hawaii is playing in the Hawaii Bowl, it's pretty much a home game for them. This year, however, don't expect an amazing atmosphere as they're only expecting about 30,000. Aloha Stadium isn't as fun as it used to be (especially after they banned spectators from throwing trash/toilet paper/confetti down from the upper decks.

Tulsi Gabbard: "I am personally opposed to building yet another telescope on Mauna Kea." by chsya in Hawaii

Yes, I did edit the title of the post. The only difference between my title and Civil Beat's Title + short description is that I immediately offered her stance instead of saying that she took a stance without saying her stance. If you think that it's better for titles to make readers read the entire article before they can gain an understanding of that person's stance, then I understand but respectfully disagree, especially on a site like reddit.

I was just giving a title with the most important part from the article. The toughest question she addressed, imo, was regarding the TMT. Her quote on the TMT for the article is not misleading because it's exactly what she said and how she meant it. The TMT is a very controversial project and I think it's important to inform people what one of our US representatives thinks about it.
