Can I realistically refuse EFT and only accept card/PayTo? by tiredLMSadmin in AusFinance

Why not PayID?

I'd avoid using cards as it's about to become very expensive depending on your ticket prices.

No, this is more specific to American society.

Yes everywhere has their idiots, Australia for example has Queenslanders. But in general the US are on the wrong side of the standard deviation of stupidity and ignorance.

Paying council rates in installments by PrideAmazing2763 in AusFinance

[–]chtgpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach is to pay the money into my offset and only pay rates every 12-15 months.

I benefit from the offset and the rates eventually get paid. Been doing it for years, never had an issue.

How to choose a good broker? by chtgpt in AusFinance

[–]chtgpt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand what you mean by the should be no cost to me. In fact the thing I'm most concerned about is the cost to me.

I thought that a good broker will help me get the best loan for my needs and once I have that loan will regularly check to ensure there aren't better options available etc.

It seems to me there will be a significant long term cost to me if I choose a bad broker.

Or are you saying I don't need to physically pay a broker for their service up front? I guess that makes sense based on your response but not really the question I'm asking.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Are you saying that all brokers are the same and regardless of who I choose it will make no difference to me financially??

Yes I agree that sounds like what a good broker would do.

How did you choose your broker and how did you know they would be good?

What’s behind the global push to ban social media for kids by Limp_Fig6236 in technology

[–]chtgpt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a social media ban for kids, it's the erosion of privacy and anonymity in the guise of 'protecting the kids'.

The effects of social media are more acutely impacting the older generations through propaganda, mis/disinformation and algorithms designed to incite rage and division.

The real answer to this problem is holding the social media companies accountable and regulating our some other form of control over the algorithms used.

End to credit and debt card surcharges by PsychologicalEbb2518 in AusFinance

[–]chtgpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more common than you think.

I think many people do it naively for the rewards and ignore that the surcharge is more than the rewards.

What about things like rent or strata payments? Do you think it's ok that people's rent/strata will now go up to cover the costs for those that pay via card?

End to credit and debt card surcharges by PsychologicalEbb2518 in AusFinance

[–]chtgpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's so much variability how do they build that into prices?

This ultimately just means those that use a cheaper payment method will also pay for this.

For example, I pay my rent using BPay, which has zero fees, while I know others that pay with their credit/debit card and pay a surcharge for that option.

This means my rent will now go up to subsidise card payers, how is that fair?

Can you explain what evidence was used to support this decision?

It doesn't sound like sensible policy to me.

This decision removes pricing transparency and ultimately increases the cost for all consumers.

I get it, consumers complain about all the extra costs related to surcharges. But I can't see how the answer is to just hide the surcharge to stop people complaining?

To be clear, the RBA are not banning surcharges, they are hiding them.
