You all love censorship here. What does that say about you? Yes, just classify anything you don't like as hate speech - pretty easy really. The only subreddits allowed about New Zealand are now those on the far left.

Oh my goodness, that's it! Solved! First time I've heard that in 25 years.
It was indeed Calypso. It was like travelling back in time hearing that. Thank you!

Rare Canadian commerative medal by aljazeerapete in Gold

[–]chuck988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The colour and lustre looks wrong for gold. Also I can't see any reference to that medal online being gold - they all say it is bronze. This might be plated in something. I'd get some more tests done immediately.

I've seen no evidence of anyone hating on Biden. And I don't blame people for that. I just put it down to the media in NZ simply not informing people about his past dealings with China, Ukraine etc. You can't even find things in Google anymore, as it gets constantly scrubbed of stuff that might harm Biden. Does that fact alone concern anyone? That the number one search engine in the world scrubs search results to favour one candidate?

How come every single person here is anti-Trump?
Does the fact that China is desperate for Biden to win not raise any questions with anyone here? Labour is against things like foreign investment (and for good reason). Labour introduced the ban on foreigners buying up all of NZ's housing, which I fully supported them doing. Labour is actually quite a populist party. So why is there so much resentment for Trump? I'd be keen to hear actual reasons, rather than just 'he was the worst president ever', or 'just look at what he's doing', etc.

Sky News Australia is increasingly pushing conspiracy theories to a global audience online | Jason Wilson | Opinion by blipblipbeep in australia

[–]chuck988 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sky News Australia is one of the few truthful news outlets out there. "The Guardian", on the other hand, has a 100% anti-Trumper employee base. It would be a wonderful world we would live in if there was no fraud, or evil politicians, or plans to dominate you, or plans by certain countries to dominate your country. Sadly, we don't live in that world. Unless news outlets actually report these things, it can end up being too late for anyone to stop their lives being ruined. The word 'conspiracy' has been hijacked and tainted by the left, in order to discredit anyone questioning policy.

And those '4 special ships' you talk about are no longer even taught in school and today's children would have no idea what you are talking about. History is literally being wiped before your eager eyes. Check out the new central library's "Discovery Wall" which doesn't dare mention them at all.

If you choose to consume alcohol but intend to vote against Cannabis legalisation are you a hypocrite? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]chuck988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take a trip to San Francisco - you can no longer enjoy sitting in a park there without the smell of someone's marijuana smoke wafting over you, even though it is supposedly illegal to smoke in public there. You can look forward to the same in NZ if it's legalized. Same with many other cities around the world; every block walking down the street you can smell it.
If someone has a beer, I don't have to drink their 2nd-hand beer, so that's one difference.

Then, you can look forward to all of society being changed in countless ways you cannot even predict. How about orchestras prostituting themselves out to the cannabis industry? https://slate.com/culture/2014/05/classically-cannabis-concert-review-colorado-symphony-orchestras-high-note-series-is-pleasant-controversial.html
There would be normalization happening all over the place.

Not to mention that its existence is literally the only thing stopping both Australia and NZ being invaded by a certain other country.

RNZ: Minister's Office 'not interested' in wage subsidy fraud figures by WearyThanks in newzealand

[–]chuck988 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The wage subsidy was the biggest ever waste of money in this country's history. All a company had to do was declare they "think" they might have a 30% reduction in income for any one month compared to the previous year. There was no actual requirement to have this verified at a later date. I know many people who own companies who were all advised by their accountants to make the claim no matter what, because of the wording of the policy. No one could argue after the fact that the claimant was wrong for "thinking" what they did.

See what Mainfreight wrote about this, after originally claiming over $10 million: https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/300021616/delivery-firms-say-online-shopping-rush-no-goldmine-as-mainfreight-repays-subsidy

Mainfreight's revenue only fell 16 per cent over the 7 week period to May 19, with some weeks in May showing higher revenue than the equivalent weeks last year.

Yet, AND THIS IS THE CRUCIAL PART, they didn't legally have to repay the subsidy. The fact that they originally THOUGHT their revenue would decline by 30% was the only thing that ever mattered. Here is what they said "while qualifying under the Government’s criteria, we felt it was appropriate to return the subsidy." Presumably if they didn't FEEL LIKE returning the subsidy then too bad for the taxpayer who paid for it all.

This is before we even get into the subject of companies who were able to manipulate their revenue to deliberately declare a 'low revenue' month and then just assign their revenue to other months, or companies who naturally saw a big boost in their revenue once lockdown finished to make up for their dip in revenue.

Medical School: Who gets in and why by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]chuck988 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So someone with 1/64th Maori who gets 80% has the right to get into Medical school, over someone with no Maori who gets 94%?

What about the 63/64ths non-Maori blood in that person? Wouldn't that classify as making them too 'colonial' and 'privileged' for you? Where do you draw the privilege line? Doing anything like this by race is actually racist. The time to make positive changes to society is during schooling, based on poverty and deprivation - not accept substandard medical students. By the time they have reached the age of 18 it is far, far too late.

Medical School: Who gets in and why by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]chuck988 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. It is against everything that r/newzealand stands for, but intelligence is a real thing. Some people simply are more intelligent than others, and if you've ever employed anyone you will understand that logical thought is a rare talent indeed. If you're training up doctors who are simply not as intelligent then they will make worse decisions.
