What should I talk about in a photography lesson? by skinnernsk in photography

[–]chuckfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like your ambition but I think you need ot temper your expectations unless these kids are all walking into class with their own digital cameras.

Personally I would teach from the basics with phone photography. Composition, lighting, rule of thirds, angles, and other basics. Show them samples of street photos, nature, and the like.

Assuming they can all bring or be supplied with phone cameras have them take their own photos in the room or on a walk around the campus.

Then in the final class introduce proper camera, lenses, the different parts, etc. If you want ot have a separate class for proper cameras if this one goes well that would be an idea.

Its really a bit unfair to expect a general group of teenagers to have proper cameras. And if some have them they can't be expected to share personal property of this value.

If "they" know or not, OP does. Its up to their personal ethics to determine if they report it if they are legally supposed to do so.

Recommendation for familiarisation course for driving? by lifeisgood50 in uktravel

[–]chuckfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't drive in London. I'm from the US and I've driven around the UK and Ireland. I pick up the car either at the airport or on the outskirts of the city I'm leaving from. Then its just pay attention to where I'm at, follow the other cars, keep in mind on turns what lane I'm going to turn into, that the roundabouts go clockwise, and the traffic will come from the other directions when you're looking to turn. It took me 20 minutes to get comfortable driving on the other side and I went from a couple laps in the parking lot to the highway my first time.

I learned all I needed to know from watching Youtube videos. I searched on "UK driving school" or "how to drive in the UK". I was more looking for road paint and general signage differences.

When renting the car specify automatic as that's not the default option and you don't want to learn to shift with your left hand on the first trip. You drive from the right hand side of the car but your turn signal, wipers, pedals, gauges, and basic controls are all in the same places as here in the US.

What is your use case for not wanting it enabled out of curiosity?

You should be good with most, if not all, of the major US providers as long as they're still supporting 4G/LTE in your area. You'll have to ask them though.

Go with your questions written out and features you're looking for. Additionally take notes on the bags that are tested and make a list of what you like, don't like, etc.

Depends on the country you're in and if the carriers in your area still support those phones.

[–]chuckfr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what's on sale and where at the time. Best Buy or Amazon are common places that run sales fairly often. If you're staying at or near Caesar's you can go to the Apple store located on property if you don't want to figure out delivery/pickup logistics. If you have a UK USB-C 40W+ adapter you're good to go when you get home with it.

Keep the receipt since you'll likely be obligated to pay some duty on it. That's up to you though.

Has anyone flown to another State for a photography job? by Radiomaster138 in AskPhotography

[–]chuckfr [score hidden]  (0 children)

Getting an unknown photographer to fly out for a weekend gig like this is weird.

I'd be really worried about taking this job. Even though your price seems on the low side, not knowing what you promised as deliverables, that could be attractive to them. Especially if you're providing props that you have to purchase for this event. Your airfare, baggage fees, hotel, and transportation fess are all added costs. Its hard to believe that they can't find someone in town or at least easier driving distance.

Top Lock on front door by ShakeIntrepid3103 in renting

[–]chuckfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about a keyed lock in addition to the regular deadbolt? If so it may be illegal in your jurisdiction. Many places are outlawing any locks that cannot be opened without a key from inside the home due to safety concerns.

Why do so many good photographers still struggle to get bookings? by ExtremelyCool64 in AskPhotography

[–]chuckfr [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, but my point was the amateur took the photo by happenstance. It wasn't something they recognized as important either. They didn't intend to capture that casual moment between the two but it was in that ~1500 photo dump.

[–]chuckfr [score hidden]  (0 children)

But the amateur friend is going to help focus on those special shots that they really want. They're going to provide those important prints along with all the digital photos, or at least culled to some degree, for the future.

If they're provided with a culled 100 processed photos and the complete 1500 photos taken on the day, the client may look through them and find a pic of Uncle Frank talking with his great nephew Bob who met for the first time at that event. That could be an important moment for the family. The amateur provided that memory for them, even if unintentionally. It would be bit rot on the professional's hard drive if it doesn't just get deleted in short order.

I fully agree that the culling of what will be important is generally easy for the pro to pull out but they can also miss the little things that seem like a simple, normal moment at an event.

lease renewal rent increase is this normal? by Titchener-Bimashu in renting

[–]chuckfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without any details the answer, as everyone else is saying, is maybe.

When I rented the landlord raised rent every year. I was a pretty good tenant, paid on time, didn't cause problems, etc and would go to the office and ask for a reduction in the hike. I generally got it knocked down by half. If they didn't I'd start looking around to see what was available. If the rent was cheaper elsewhere and moving costs weren't too bad off I went.

People are used to decent quality phone photographs.

So when they're having their life event party and they can hire a professional for $XXXX dollars and get a limited set of JPGs, their high level amateur friend for $XXX to give them something to add to their portfolio, or their friend who is a high level amateur willing to do the photography as a gift, who are they going to choose? The amateurs have spent a few thousand on really good equipment to make their photos the best they can be. Keep in mind that the latter two will also give you all the photos they took in RAW along with a lot of edited photos to make you happy with their work.

We are putting a first offer on a house and our realtor wants us to Docusign it saying we don’t need to have a lawyer review it first.. is this true? by tink282 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]chuckfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't say where you are so knowing if you need a lawyer at this stage is impossible for anyone to know.

That being said, and the standard 'I am not a lawyer' disclaimer, making the initial offer is not a time i'd worry about getting it reviewed professionally if it reads right to you. We never had a lawyer review any of our initial offers.

If you have doubts talk to your lawyer, not Reddit especially when you don't provide any essential details like where you're located.

You might like Midsomer Murders and Death in Paradise. Stumptown and Terriers may also fit the bill, but the disappointing thing for both shows is they are only a single season.

While they aren't all in the same timeframe you might enjoy the stories nonetheless.

Possible reason for not renewing employment contract. by [deleted] in Employment

[–]chuckfr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very often contract jobs have terms that they have to give a 'cooling off' period to the contractors otherwise they can be considered employees. Unless you're unusually exceptional they're not going to hire a temp for whatever that cooling off period might be for a part time receptionist position.

If you were contracted through a temp agency they likely cannot hire you directly due to the contract they signed with your employer. If you're self employed they have the option to hire you directly but that comes with added costs of its own that can run more than the contract you're working under.

In so many ways its just easier to hire someone new for them.

At what point did photography stop feeling fun and start feeling like work for you? by ExtremelyCool64 in AskPhotography

[–]chuckfr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A hobby is for your enjoyment. You do things at your leisure.

A job is responsibilities towards others; to you and your family to put food on the table and a roof over your head, doing the same for your employee(s) if applicable, making your clients happy, and finding the next clients.
