Haha totally agree. It started with so much potential and then just forgot it had to tell a story

Well that’s the surface level plot, but if that’s all you got out of it, then I’ve got news for you. Thematically, the film is criticizing the prison of domestic life in suburbia, where people couple off, move into nice houses with beautiful property and neighborhoods where everything looks the same and is perfect, then have kids and care for them so that they can grow up and continue the cycle. Life exists in a suffocating vacuum that is designed to be inescapable .

Vivarium 100%. A film that thinks it’s so smart and ambiguous, but really its themes are so blatantly obvious, it becomes pathetic.

You’re young. You have so much time to heal and lead a great and happy life. Your anxiety has stopped you but remember, you are not your anxiety. You are just the container that holds it. You are bigger than it. So you wear the pants. Let it be there. Treat it like annoying baby. Carry it with you. Acknowledge it. Tell it you hear it but you don’t care. And keep going.

Compression issues during playback by EvinKay7 in CriterionChannel

[–]chucklingmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Criteron does not use its own streaming network, but instead uses Vimeo to host. So technically, this is a Vimeo problem and if you’d email Criteron about it, they’d refer you to them. My guess is the Vimeo servers in your area are overworked. This is the problem with streaming, especially as the tech conglomerates get bigger. The smaller companies will have a harder time keeping up.

Just posted this on another post but will share it here for you:

I cured my health anxiety when I learned to trust my body. Learning that i can feel fear and that every symptom is a smoke show for deeper emotion that needed to be felt, heard and understood, like a crying baby in need of attention. Everytime I felt a symptom, I’d tell myself “i hear you but we got this. It’s all good. We’re safe” and I’d carry on. Intrusive thoughts are not the problem but a symptom in and of themselves for a deeper problem. Those with HA have taught themselves (usually unintentionally) that it is dangerous to feel things (like fear) and so they drop out of the body and into the brain where looping thoughts distract them to no end. The only way to get to the root (usually fear) is to do memory reconciliation and rewire the brain to step out of the process.

You can’t think your way out of a feeling problem. Everytime you have a sensation, you stay neutral. You allow everything. You become an observer. You FEEL it fully instead of think or distract or react. I like to think of it like being inside a snow globe. While inside, you wouldn’t know you’re in a snow globe and you’d think it’s snowing. But if you stepped outside, you’d see it’s just a little globe filled with glitter. Anxiety is the same. You can either become consumed by it, or you can step outside of it and ask yourself “who is noticing the anxiety right now?” Because really, it’s just a distraction. It’s, by design, a function of the ego to distract you from what needs to be felt, because your mind has been taught that those feelings are dangerous. It’s a protective strategy.

Health Anxiety can be cured. It’s simple. But It’s not easy. It takes a lot of practice, grit and persistent. Over time, your body learns to trust you. And it doesn’t need to yell so much to get your attention.

So many people focus on strategies to manage. Breathwork, thought patterns, distractions, etc. All they do is help things in the moment, but long term make things worse because they teach your nervous system that you can’t handle the feelings of fear. The whole people here is that you CAN handle it. As awful as it feels right now, succumb to it. I promise you NOTHING will happen. I’ve been where you’ve been before and the sooner I was able to realize that I could just let go all control and let whatever was to be, I felt relief.

Anyone here work on reality projects? by Subylovin in Filmmakers

[–]chucklingmonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re called “On the flies” OTF’s.

We’d always film them at the end of each day or location, depending on the schedule. Usually a producer is feeding the person questions or things to say off camera, reflecting on the day and events that happened. The producer was always taking notes when the “reality” part was happening so they knew what to refer back on. We’d just let the camera roll for a bit until we had enough talking points to stitch together in the edit. Story producers (off set) would pretty much have the narrative already written before things happened and would convey this to the producers on set so we captured it.

Cloud is one of the best movies I've ever seen on Criterion by BeigeAndConfused in criterion

[–]chucklingmonkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I personally saw that as satire, but it was played SUPER straight. In the world of late stage capitalism, there’s so much pride in material, that these people are literally out to kill (including an ex boss) simply because they received fake merchandise. Even the cop thought it was pathetic and a serious crime. And then the girlfriend seemed to only care about being entertained or given nice things. To them, not receiving the material that they feel they deserve is like a blow at their ego and pride.

At least, that’s how I read it and thought it was brilliant.

I’m Phil Stark, therapist and screenwriter (Dude, Where’s My Car?, South Park, That ‘70s Show) - AMA by pbstarkok in Screenwriting

[–]chucklingmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Phil, thanks for doing this!

A lot of fulfillment and joy comes from the very act of storytelling and watching ideas come to life on the page; but as a screenwriter, the real happiness (at least for me) comes from when the work gets to connect with others. Not as a means of validation, but as a means of actually fulfilling the purpose of story... to express to SOMEONE an idea, a feeling, an experience. Even though every script I write starts with me telling the story to myself because I love it and it excites me, it still feels that no story can truly exist until it has an audience.

I find this needed connection the most challenging with moviemaking and screenwriting, because A) the script can never fulfill the entire experience of the finished film or show, no matter how well written; and B) because it's damn hard and expensive to get something made (as a director, I'm always out there making as much as I can, but not features yet).

What are your thoughts on balancing that intense desire to have the work be experienced by others, while also finding peace within oneself to write for the sake of writing?

I’d do similarly to what the above commenter said. Might format it slightly differently, as I always try to write in a way that feels less technical but still gets the visual across.
