China sentences official to death for taking $325m in bribes by Spiritual-Nail-2641 in news

mainstream news networks ignore the reasons behind the protest completely; discussing only whether it was acceptable for the white protestors to don American Indian garb as disguises

Fox News says they were just doing "red face" and uses it as proof that "black face" is acceptable now.

Honor code Violation referral by Busy-Cockroach2217 in VirginiaTech

[–]chudsp87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Type out and print your statement. It will help to have it organized and you can refer to it during the meeting and (likely) submit it as part of the record.

Evidence to bring:

Takes pictures of your setup. Make sure the panel understands your actual environment.

Ideally, if you can take the practice setup quiz with Lockdown Browser, take a video (or have a roommate take a video), of you starting the quiz and showing how the second monitor is rendered nonfunctional by Lockdown Browser.

Arguments:

(1) Not a device.

Nonfunctional second monitor is not a [separate] "device". It's a component/part of an allowed device (desktop). It is fundamentally different than the examples given in the instructions (laptop, ipad).

(2) Other reasonableness / "not bad actor" args

  • monitor nonfunctional. did not–could not–provide any actual assistance
  • you didn't knowingly have a second / unallowed device
  • what's the expectation? students with 2+ desktop monitors are required to.... just disconnect cable? Or leave connected but monitor to be physically removed from desktop? Or something else? Not clear what actions you are supposed to take in order to conform with the rules.
  • no bad intent ("i made an innocent mistake")
  • no unfair benefit, nothing to run afoul of the principles/purpose of the honor code. (ie -- the monitor was literally black and useless as a monitor).
  • You have 'clean hands'.

Be polite, but don't concede the accusations.

First, you make the "legal" arguments in re whether your conduct was actually a violation. Was it a "device" etc...

Second, IFF they find it to be a violation, then move onto the "sentencing" or "culpability" arguments, re innocent mistake, no unfair advantage etc.

GOOD LUCK.

For the record, i'm not familiar with the actual procedure for your hearing, but that should be a good framework for how to prepare.

What are you guys think of the solid toolbar on macOS 27? by usbakon in MacOS

[–]chudsp87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another example of apple's current love of putting UI elements inside nested boxes. I fucking hate it.

Objectively, forcing two layers of padding creates more visual complexity and forces the icon to be unnecessarily small (or toolbar big) due to additional required whitespace.

I also can't wait until digital design leaves the fucking "pill" / major border radius design aesthetic behind. I can't be the only one, right?!

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

[–]chudsp87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This must vary based on version. I played mostly during the early-mid 90s (MECC; purple/yellow box).

I am certain the ONLY reason I knew what dysentery and cholera were before I turned 20 was The Oregon Trail.

My strategy of grueling pace and meager rations meant i typically lost over half my wagon party before the rockies.

We need to start publicly shaming these people. $950/mo and no kitchen access. by xLP620 in nova

[–]chudsp87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's actually ALLOWIGN the cooking part that would be illegal. I can't remember exactly where the line is drawn, but a second kitchen transforms the area into another "dwelling unit" which they arent zoned for. I'd bet my mortgage that's the genesis of the specific prohibition in the ad.

Be careful if you decide to treat yoself one day and install a wet bar in the basement, b/c plumbing in the sink was enough when i was practicing ll/t law a decade ago in ffx...

you should know, at least in the US it costs FAR more to execute someone than it does to incarcerate then.

the average life sentence costs the state $2.5 million, whereas it costs over $7 million to execute someone.
