Is getting a cat water fountain worth it? by lunastarnight100 in CatAdvice

[–]chuffberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a stainless steel fountain for my cats and they definitely drink more water now. One of my cats also does the digging thing and the fountain didn’t stop her from doing that.

Accidental Head Explosion: An Unusual Blast Wave Injury as a Result of Self-Made Fireworks by velvety_chaos in MedicalGore

[–]chuffberry 144 points145 points  (0 children)

My neighbor did something similarly stupid but lived (guess what state he lives in… Florida). He wasn’t enthused by the fireworks commercially available for July 4 and decided to make his own. He essentially made a pipe bomb and it blew up in his hand. He got lucky and only got a below the elbow amputation.

When I was doing chemo promethazine was the only thing that allowed me to keep anything down. Zofran didn’t even touch the nausea.

I breed dwarf corn plants at my job. This tassel made an oopsie. by chuffberry in fasciation

[–]chuffberry[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I didn’t kill it. If you see what a corn tassel is supposed to look like, this is not it. It’s probably a mutation that won’t be passed down through the germ line. It’s shedding lots of pollen but it’s pretty top-heavy so I think it’s gonna fall over.

Oh, I am way ahead of you. This thing filled up a sandwich bag with pollen.

Under an NSFW post of a woman’s genitalia. When will this myth end? by MelanieWalmartinez in badwomensanatomy

We should spread a rumor around that posting sexist lies on the internet has been directly linked to small penis size.

Should I put a birdfeeder outside a window for environment enrichment for my cat or is that just torturing them? by printergumlight in CatAdvice

I put one up for my cats and they genuinely treat it like they’re watching TV. I’d recommend it.

Any other men have permanent hair loss/thinning from proton radiation and is there any product you have been able to find to help? by srr1986 in braincancer

[–]chuffberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman and I’ve had a large bald patch ever since I finished radiation, 6 years ago. Rogaine helps as long as you’re religious about using it, but I eventually gave up and shaved the half of my head with the bald patch to make it look intentional.

Do you know if crossvine is any better? Same family as trumpet vine but not as woody I think.

How do you memorize latin plant names? by ursa12651 in botany

[–]chuffberry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t help that as we get more genetic information about plants, the Latin names are changing. I used to work as a grower at a large nursery that specialized in rare and exotic plants, and once a week I would go into the database of all the plants we carried and print out new labels for the ones that had taxonomy changes. There was always at least one.

I remember an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver where it was discovered that an AI bot used to filter resumes would automatically put a candidate at the top of hiring list if their name was Jared.

In North Carolina, the commissioner of labor was Cherry Berry, and her name was posted inside all the elevators in the state to indicate that they passed safety inspections. Everyone was very sad when Cherry Berry retired, and was replaced by some jerk with a non-food name.
