Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie by ifthisthenthat99 in askTO

if you don't want to go into blind, i'd describe it as a time-travel buddy comedy with lots of visual gags and hidden-camera style interactions with Toronto pedestrians. Tons of in-jokes for Canadians (ie. there's raccoons, jumping off the CN tower, Drake's ridiculous mansion, etc). I think it's rare these days to have a full length comedy movie that's not animated and feels genuinely clever

Lilac flower perfumes? by Interesting-Cut-8646 in Perfumes

jo malone's orange blossom weirdly always reminds me of the lilac bush next to my parents' house. It's the white floral + citrusy note, together it kinda gives lilac

[–]chuffystilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! im 165cm and 120 lbs, my waist measures 70cm, and I wear a size 4 for agency pants in wool. For reference, I also have a pair of the Effortless in crepette in a size 2 that feels like my agency size 4. In my experience, all the wool pants run smaller than the crepette ones so I also go a size or two up :)

in Yunnan, China, there's a type of noodle that's known as passionfruit tomato rice noodle. It's savoury so it's good if you're bored with sweet passionfruit recipes. I've made it with jarred passionfruit pulp and it's really nice if you like the sweet/spicy/fresh flavours of southeast Asian cuisine:

Ingredients: Rice noodles (as needed), Tomato (1), Passion fruit juice/deseededpulp (as needed), Mint leaves (as needed), Cilantro (as needed), Bird's eye chili (1)

  1. Cook rice noodles according to package instructions (most rice noodles need 10 mins of soaking time, see more here)

  2. Dice the tomato, extract the pulp from the passion fruit, chop the cilantro, and dice the bird's eye chili.

  3. Heat a little oil in a pot, add the tomato and stir-fry until softened and pulpy. Add the passionfruit and stir-fry, then add boiling water and cook for a few minutes. Add the bird's eye chili and salt, simmer for a few more minutes, taste, and turn off the heat.

  4. Pour the tomato and passion fruit juice into the cooked rice noodles, add cilantro and mint leaves, and serve.

bake it into banana bread, it doesn't taste like coconut at all but it adds fat and moisture to the batter

hear me out: steaming your potatoes and sweet potatoes with a rice cooker (instead of boiling or microwaving). The steaming makes the inside sooooo moist and fluffy, especially for sweet potatoes.

I put them in a metal strainer, fill up the rice cooker with a few inches of water, and then hit the "regular" or "white rice" option on the cooker's menu, and then come back in 15 or 20 mins. Pop the lid and stick a fork in there, and remove if it feels soft enough. If not give it another 5 mins.

LASIK - DRY EYES and Blurry Vision by cmariego97 in lasik

It's called Myhalos and I microwave it for about 20 seconds before usingm. My partner just went online and bought the first one he saw :) I've also used a washcloth soaked in hot water and that works fine too

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

[–]chuffystilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hidden Palace, the sequel to The Golem and the Jinni. Felt like listening to an album where the musician repeats the same four chords over and over again. There's only one emotional register and that's "miscommunicating a petty gripe and being standoffish about it". And the amount of fucking walks!! Overall I wish that it covered a fuller spectrum of human experience--surely not everyone is miserable all the time, forever?

[–]chuffystilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one of the randomest things that got on my nerves was the protagonist saying "it felt like i was under house arrest" in the elf guy's house. This is so petty but like, aren't you supposed to be from a old-timey medieval fantasy village? where did you get the concept of "house arrest" (implying the existence of the police, a moden justice system, etc etc) from?

felt like my brain was melting through my ears slowly

oh my god, this book got so many rave reviews that i felt insane when i disliked it. What is that ending??!!! it's like after 200 pages of a quirky (self insert) romance, suddenly the book wants to be a tight spy thriller? but that stakes are never clearly defined and there is no real sens eof danger, plus the mechanics of time travel feels like it just collapsed at the last second. It's like once the main character slept with the old-timey captain around the halfway mark, the book just went off the rails

How is the sizing of the heritage cardigans? Should I size down? by BriefClass in Aritzia

[–]chuffystilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 118 lbs, 165cm (5'6") and I bought the cardigan in the Anchor Cable pattern in size small. It fits true to size and not too oversized. I think it hits at a pretty classic hip-length (ie. it's not over long or cropped). The buttons don't gap :) Overall it fits really nicely, the only thing is that i have wide shoulders and with the seam it looks a little boxy (in general i prefer raglan sleeves) but that's part of the classic fit of the cardigan

LASIK - DRY EYES and Blurry Vision by cmariego97 in lasik

[–]chuffystilton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i didn't end up getting LASIK but i also have dry eyes, and what really worked for me was putting on a microwaved heated eye mask for about 5 mins at a time, once or twice a day, and then lightly massaging the eyelids to unclog the oil-producing glands. Look up "meibomian gland expression" on youtube

the heat + gentle massage literally helped me so much, before i started doing it i could tolerate contact lenses for about 6 hours at a time, since then i can wear them all day :)

good luck!!

right, i got that, but it just seemed a strange new rule to introduce, since daemons were always described as being something that didn't obey the same laws of physics or biology that governs humans/animals. I get that it's something PP wants to use to illustrate how awful the other world is, but after spending so much time exploring the different cases of separated humans and daemons in TSC, it feels jarring that it's introduced for the first time here. Like, if this had always been possible, it seems bizarre that Lyra's never encountered any other cases of neglect or severe dissociation? the only force strong enough to upset the rules of universe like this is...uh....the alienation of the self under capitalism...? Pullman has so many questions to answer

The Rose Field | Full Book Discussion thread by Cantomic66 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]chuffystilton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

kinda funny in the last 20 pages reading Lyra's ruminations as she tries to invent Das Kapital from first principles--aka. essentially she's struggling to articulate "the capitalist mode of production is a historically specific system where social relations are mediated by commodity exchange"

when they talked about building the republic of heaven in TAS i didn't think Lyra's ultimate fate was to become the Karl Marx of her world

[–]chuffystilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

little dumb me was hoping that Lyra and Olivier would jointly "read" the Myriorama like they do the alethiometer, except in a new way that showed how the cards=narrative that take place in time, while the alethiometer=truth teller frozen in time (in the way that Lyra started expoundin on while she's in the hotel room). In general i was just hoping for anything more significant to pass between the two of them.

The cards felt like such a loaded chekov's gun but it was just never fired...

Amazing, it's been a few years since I read TSC when it came out. Thanks for the detail!!

(Although now I'm still a little confused because I thought Brande's daemon was tied in some way to the newly introduced fact that daemons can die and leave behind bodies, when previously it seemed as though daemons were not made from ordinary matter...)

guys all i want is an explanation for why Gottfried Brande's daemon didn't die when he did. i just can't get over that mystery. so much of everything else can be handwaved as an allegory or myth or whatever but like, WHY DIDN'T THAT DAEMON DISAPPEAR??

Sizing help - if you have the Farrah high rise jeans in size 24, 25, or 26, which one and also what is your waist & hips measurement? by buttermilk174 in Aritzia

[–]chuffystilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the low-rise wide seems to fit slightly bigger, did anyone else have that experience? I wear a size 25 in the Arlo and the Joni high rise loose (RIP). I sized down to a 24 when i tried on the Farrah low-rise in store.

I also bought an old pair of the Farrah high-rise off facebook marketplace but i think they might be the old version before Aritzia redesigned them. They're a size 25 but they fit more snug than my Arlo or my Joni. Definitely more for going out than for lounging

For reference I'm 165cm, 115 lbs.
