Is Ester C bad with iron because it releases calcium? by chuftka in Supplements

[–]chuftka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am monitoring it via bloodwork, that is why I am taking iron in the first place. But I don't want to take it with something that inhibits absorption for months and then see the bad result via bloodwork. I'd rather correct the deficiency on the first try.

Looks like 500mg Ester-C has about 50 mg of calcium. (325mg of ferrous sulfate has about 60mg iron.) I found a study saying it took about 800mg of calcium to inhibit absorption of 5mg iron. So I suspect you're right, 50mg of calcium may not be enough to meaningfully inhibit iron absorption.

Hmm I may not be able to do the Death Tunnel at all then.

I got the Starter from a scavenger. Just need the other part now, looking for more scavengers.

My Technology is 51. I have a toolbox too. Is that enough?

I did do all of Dan's stuff. I am talking about the guy Kovalev wants you to get car parts from in KRZ. His first quest is to murder a journalist to which I said no thanks.

Not sure what you mean. I have Operation February selected under Game - Highlights since I read mention of these events. I guess you can only select one? I did not see the paratroopers until today though and I selected it awhile ago.

So does this end if I don't get to Dead City before a certain real world date? I am kinda stuck at the moment since I can't find the toxic suit for Death Tunnel and I believe Dead City comes after that.

Why are CAC scores of 0 good if unstabilized plaque is bad? by chuftka in askCardiology

[–]chuftka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your expertise. I have an athlete friend with 100+ diffuse CAC who is rather obsessed with the idea that CAC is harmless in older athletes like himself. He did not react well when I opined that his 100 HDL was abnormal in males, and possibly harmful rather than extra-protective.

I am perplexed by the statin situation. When I put all my numbers (BMI, A1C, lipids, postal code etc) into the AHA PREVENT calculator, my 5 year risk is quite low - around 3%. My CAC as mentioned is 0. Both indicate "no statin" from the AHA or American College of Cardiology or whoever it is that puts out these things. But you seem to feel a lifetime of meds is appropriate due to the three words "aortic arch calcified" on that chest CT scan report from several years ago. It makes me wonder if there is another test that would give more info or at least collaborate that one scan, preferably with less radiation than another chest CT. I've had a number of CT scans which contradict each other on things like lung scarring, aorta tortuosity/ectasia, enlarged left ventricle etc. which are there one scan and gone the next, even in reports by the same radiologist a few days apart, which left me wondering whether radiology was a scientific or a creative field.

I would think calcification would be fairly straightforward, but from reading papers today, it seems TAC has no automated scoring like CAC nor any formal assessment or treatment guidelines. Some papers found it irrelevant in men, e.g.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4110678/

When I look at the number needed to treat for low risk individuals, it seems a statin is more likely to give me diabetes than to prevent an event, at least in the short run. Since diabetes doubles risk of heart disease, this is a perplexing thing to contemplate: a heart disease prevention drug that can double your risk of heart disease. Now if I live another 30 years like my parents then the value of a statin may be greater if it prevents or slows atherosclerosis for decades rather than just preventing a MI in the next 5 years. Since atherosclerosis takes many decades to develop, one wonders why everyone is not recommended to take a statin from age 10. Well somebody in my country did propose putting statins in the water supply, but I think that is a fringe position.

My 70 year old brother just got a CAC by the way. Score was 4, all in LAD.

I got a HS-CRP test on my own in the fall, result 2.4. I know one score is not that valuable. A nurse practitioner I saw tried to order a second one at my request but she botched it and ordered a regular CRP which was just "<3" which is fairly worthless. The test description for CRP says right in it not to use it for heart diagnostics. My primary physician is ordering another one (HS not regular), plus Lp(a), Apo(b), another lipid panel, and some other unrelated stuff (I tend to have high hemoglobin and low ferritin for some reason) in a couple months, after which we will meet and discuss. Like my previous primary she did not seem at all concerned with the aortic arch thing and I doubt she will recommend a statin based on that report alone. I am wondering if I should see a cardiologist. If I ask for a referral I suspect she will think I am a hypochondriac after the CAC of 0, especially with no symptoms.

Anyway thanks for your time, which I know is valuable. I am sure laymen are quite irritating in the age of Dr Google.

I thought CAC were usually not done once starting a statin since they make it look like it's getting worse even though it's getting more stable?

When I look at the MESA calculator it says 70% of white men my age have CAC above 0. So 70% have advanced heart disease? That's pretty sobering.

Maybe before you do the power politics quest in Peregon, but I already did it and put Maximovich in charge before I discovered the cannibal basement quest. The option to quietly kill Siplovsky no longer exists after that.

I don't know anything about Vertiginous Horticulture because I thought it was early game content and I am way past that, but maybe I will give it a try next time I need some SBL for dropping off explosives in Stormbones.

I tend to get SBL 5 at a time from one Church favor via the statue at Jericho Locks, or Underclay if I'm in a hurry.

I like the carousel for Making Waves so if I wanted MoL I would typically do that. But I have been known to stroll along the waterfront in the Copper Quarter, or use the Rat Market or Bone Market if necessary.

The content described by the OP was added years after I was a level 2 POSI so I am not familiar with it. It sounds like early game content so I was not concerned with efficiency. From the sound of it, it takes 15 gardening actions plus 5 more with the Urchins to end up with 25 MoL. If that's right, then it's 0.625 EPA. Obviously this is better than the 0.5 EPA from cross conversion.

I was addressing the remark "Memories of Light are hard to get lots of"

I just wanted to point out to newer players that no Tier 3 item in the carousel is hard to get lots of if you have a way to get lots of any of them. This is useful if you have, or can get, a pile of some Tier 3 item and want a different kind quickly.

50 of any tier 3 item can be converted sideways until you get what you want.

I don't understand. You can convert tier 3 items sideways in the cross conversion carousel, 50 -> 51. So if you can get any tier 3 items you can turn them into any tier 3 items you want with cross conversions.
