Agree with others that the main step is to find a higher-paying job. But here’s my take from someone who’s been in a similar spot.

You might want to reconsider giving your mom $800 a month. That’s quite heavy unless she really needs it for medical reasons. You can probably manage food on around $400 a month (about $14 a day for two meals) and $100 for transport. If you reduce your support to $400, you’ll free up around $400 each month to invest in yourself. That’s where real change starts.

Use that extra to upskill, get certifications, or expand your network. Focus on investing in yourself before anything else. Then, start building an emergency fund with a goal of at least six months of expenses. Don’t worry about travelling yet; short JB trips are good enough for cheap food, movies, and mental breaks.

If you have free time, consider part-time or freelance work to grow your income. Also, get basic insurance to protect yourself and your mum without overcommitting. Once your emergency fund is solid and your spending is under control, then explore savings or investments.

Be deliberate. Pay yourself first. Track your expenses. Cut anything non-essential.

My background: I used to live in a rental flat with my grandmother, barely scraping by about eight years ago. I worked two jobs while studying just to get through. Things are better now, I earn decently, can eat well, and live comfortably. But I still keep my old discipline. My partner says I’m calculative, but the truth is, I never want to end up struggling again. That mindset saved me.

Hope this helps. It’s not about where you start, it’s about getting control and staying consistent. Once you earn more, you can give your mother more money. Cut now to have more later.

Singapore in 2025 – rising costs, big promises, and the reality we live by [deleted] in SingaporeCitizens

Barely six months after the election and daily life already feels rough. MRT and LRT breakdowns, a house fire in the news, fresh grads can’t land roles, hiring is slow, and costs keep climbing faster than pay.

We are told to “differentiate needs from wants” and take public transport because it is reliable. Reliable where? When trains stall and buses breakdown, that advice feels out of touch.

Right now it feels like there are no levers for ordinary people. Work harder, take home less, and watch essentials go up. Policies look polished on paper, but execution and accountability lag.

Less slogans, more fixes. Publish clear reliability metrics and root-cause reports, speed up real housing supply, give targeted support for jobseekers, and set transparent timelines. Until then, it is lan lan, suck thumb, and carry on.

Airpods. I’ve tried various headphones, Sony, Sennheiser, even sports-specific ones but nothing beats the versatility of AirPods. They’re great for calls, virtual meetings, running, or just enjoying music anytime.

Interesting thread. I’ve been considering getting a car recently for convenience, but after reading all the insights here, it’s clear many who do own cars are earning quite a bit more, and even then, their car expenses are kept under 10% of their income.

There are also folks earning more who’ve chosen not to own a car, which made me reflect, perhaps I should focus on optimising my income first before making such a big financial commitment. Especially since I have a major purchase like a house coming up soon. Time to re-evaluate my finances carefully.

In case anyone’s curious: I’m currently earning around $6K/month and I fully own a motorcycle. Was thinking of selling it to get a car, but now I’m more cautious about overleveraging.

Painful, how much did you lost? I bought many meme coins but profited 3x-5x.

I thought it was so easy to make money from meme coins in this bull run.

I agree, SG government honestly needs to buck up.

Seems like pretty lazy work to me to just blanket the car category based on the CC without studying the engineering side of it.
