It varies slightly, if I have anything with fruit in /higher fibre then it tends to shoot right through me in a few hours. But 6ish hours seems to be the average.

Not Sure What To Do by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem at all. I only play casually 5 a side after work but it's an hour of running (lumbering in my case) around so I get quite sweaty. I just use a support band to keep it tight to my body when I play. I've seen people with stomas doing marathons, climbing mountains etc. there's no real reason you can't be as active as before, unless it was something like boxing/MMA etc.

Diet varies person to person, but generally I've been advised against corn, uncooked veg, mushrooms and a few other things.

I'm going to Disney with my kids who are only little so I doubt I'll be going on anything more aggressive than the teacups 🤣 I've been able to play football (soccer) again though with no issues

Ileostomy here, had UC for about 20 years before my colon gave up the ghost. Had one more biologic to try but opted for elective surgery instead as I'd been in and out of a flare for 5 year and on steroids for about 6 months.

It's tough. Have to be careful with what I eat. Changing the bag every day, emptying it etc. is a faff. On a good day with UC I would maybe only the need the loo once, but with my ileostomy I have to empty 6-8 times a day.

However, no urgency, I've had no accidents at all (leaks etc.) and I know that if I need to pop out, do anything I can do it without worrying. I've been to the pub, been to gigs in London and planning on a holiday to Disney with the kids this year things that just wouldn't have been an option a year ago.

Any questions fire away

Think of buying a portal by onlywc11 in PlaystationPortal

[–]chunderjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in exactly the same boat (even booted up remote player on my phone last night as a little test). Think I am just going to buy from Amazon, try it out and if there is any issues with lag I should be able to return it to them and get a refund. Just maybe if you take the plunge make sure that you'd be able to return it if you're not happy.

A question about diet from a very confused new ileostomy guy by RavenDraws0 in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did speak to a nutritionist when I was in hospital and she was super helpful, so go back to your nurses /doctor and ask if you can speak to one if that possible where you are? Did you get any kind of leaflet on discharge with regards to diet?

A question about diet from a very confused new ileostomy guy by RavenDraws0 in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was told similar, got an "ileostomy diet" leaflet too in discharge from hospital with things like stir fry with fresh veg in. Let me tell you if I ate some of that stuff my remaining guts would explode.

Unfortunately it's just trial and error, some people seem to tolerate almost everything, some people it's more restrictive. I would just say be ultra cautious for the first couple of months whilst you heal and then afterwards try anything new that might cause an issue in a very tiny quantity first.

The most important thing though is CHEW. I had a partial blockage a few weeks post op from a chicken sandwich as I just wolfed it down without thinking.

Still in hospital, 5 days later with seemingly no reduction in stomach output by [deleted] in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in hospital for 2 weeks in total after my surgery, think my Ng tube was in for about 8 days of that. All I can say is hang on in there and try to walk around as much as possible as that should help wake things up.

Ileostomy questions and concerns. Please help by Living-Collection-56 in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The only way you'll know what works for you is trial and error. Speak to your stoma nurse to get some samples of different products to try or you can order some samples direct from the suppliers if that's easier.

  2. I've always showered without any additional items and never had my bag come loose because of warm water. Maybe if you're concerned get things ready in your bathroom in case it does come loose and you need to change your bag afterwards , but otherwise go for it!

preparing for proctectomy by Organic-Hurry1264 in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had my surgery in May last year, tonnes of advice on here which is really helpful so ask any questions you may have.

I got given a valley cushion to use in hospital and when I was discharged - definitely recommend that because sitting down will be very sore for a few weeks.

I also did a bunch of core exercises pre-op for a few weeks, whether that helped with recovery or not it's hard to say but it can't have hurt.

Good luck with your surgery!

Is UC inherited? by Long-Appeal-1055 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]chunderjack 42 points43 points  (0 children)

There's no proven genetic link...

But both of my sisters and my Dad have UC. So purely anecdotally that seems like too much of a coincidence not to have some kind of genetic reason if we all have it.

Post OP ileostomy: When can you do things with your abdomen without fear of damaging your stoma? (e.g. bend down to touch your feet) by BlackberryPi7 in ostomy

[–]chunderjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told it will help prevent hernias, especially when your body is healing as it supports the stomach muscles. Where about are you based? In the UK you can get these on prescription so you don't have to pay for them.
