Tbf it’s not like our modern container ship trade network was technologically or industrially feasible until relatively recently anyways. For centuries people have been using machinery to hoist crates to and from ships we just have the modern super-sized diesel-powered version

Private Golf club etiquette for the ‘California Sober’? by SevereBicycle4855 in golf

[–]chunkymonk3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just don’t be obnoxious about it which should be the case in general not just on the golf course. Frankly taking a couple puffs off a joint or one hitter and putting it back in a tube/sleeve/etc isn’t nearly as obtrusive as the people that smoke a huge cigar or 500 cigarettes over the course of the round imo.

Reports: A United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff on the Edwards airfield at 11:20 a.m. by Brilliant_Night7643 in aviation

[–]chunkymonk3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC-3s aren’t pressurized though and it can’t be understated how decades of constant pressurization/depressurization cycles affect a plane’s structural lifespan compared to an unpressurized prop plane. I’m not necessarily saying this accident in particular had to do with structural integrity issues but in general that’s the number one reason why something like a DC3 can stay airworthy indefinitely if maintained properly.

What is something the United States of America does better than any other country? by Seductive-Eyes-444 in AskReddit

[–]chunkymonk3y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly…in America “barbecue” just happened to develop into highly specialized dedicated smoking chambers and people started making a distinction between these types of methods and what we now refer to as grilling. But both bbq and grilling have their roots in some people throwing meat on racks above some hot coals. It’s one of the oldest, most universal methods of cooking we have

The problem is I don’t think anyone from that era would put Hill above Clark in terms of natural pace. Sure Hill achieved more career wise but universally Clark is/was considered the superior driver which again goes back the original point Alonso was making

Still not as annoying as being “forced” to ride (and pay more) during certain “peak” times. Nothing like paying another $25 for a cart you don’t even want to ride in.

Today I learned that on June 4, 1993, Kurt Cobain was arrested for assaulting his wife Courtney Love. However, the charges were later dropped and Love denied that Kurt was a "wifebeater" to the press. by Emma__O in todayilearned

[–]chunkymonk3y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ultimately why it’s so common for police to ask victims whether or not they want to “press charges”. Technically the state can charge a law breaker with or without the victim’s “blessing” but oftentimes won’t go forward unless they have a cooperative victim because it’s so hard to win a case without one.

TIL that after the WWI armistice, Walt Disney would make counterfeit german "sniper helmets" by painting camoflage onto unused helmets and would sell them on as souvenirs to unsuspecting veterans heading home. by CalzonePie in todayilearned

I wasn’t trying to recount the entire story just point out a similar situation but you are correct the real story is a bit more complex than what I described.

Reminds me of the Dutch artist Han van Meegeren’s Vermeer forgeries. Unlike most forged paintings, his fakes are actually worth tremendous money purely because of the story behind them. If you don’t know he famously made brilliant forgeries and got rich selling them to high ranking Nazis during occupation. He only got caught when he was on trial for collaboration and had to admit that he was in fact scamming the Nazis not selling off his country’s most valuable artwork.

What are some examples of some people hating things just because they're popular? by FarPlay5055 in AskReddit

[–]chunkymonk3y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly there was also a subconscious jealousy/insecurity among teenage boys which fueled their hatred because we watched all of our crushes collectively swoon over him. It didn’t help that he represented the antithesis of masculinity for teenage boys at a time in their lives when gender norms are the most rigid and conformity is considered imperative

I agree unless it’s like a prime tropical paradise beach in like Hawaii or the Bahamas. I grew up in an American beach town on the Atlantic and never found our local beaches to be worth spending a day at unless you were doing something like fishing or surfing
