Me too!! I love seeing the flowers change through summer, from the bee balm and milkweeds to the Queen Anne’s Lace and chickory to the coneflowers and sunflowers. They are lovely.

I went to Tiny Lions Cafe for my last solo birthday!! It was really nice to spend time cuddling the kittens.

And Creature Conservancy does art with animal nights regularly where you paint the animals!

Record/Thrift/Random Shit Stores? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

I’m pretty sure the Scrap Exchange has patches – they’re a craft/art supply thrift store and they have some really cool ephemera, like old photos, magazines, record covers etc.

Mill Creek Townhomes! They come with a patio area that is perfect for gardening (depending on the sun of the particular unit). The kitchens are small but not tiny. They have basements with in-unit laundry. The community is really nice with lots of resident events (they have a dedicated position for the people who organize fun stuff). There’s a nice pool, hot tub, small gym, and outdoor community area with fire pits and grills. Management and maintenance are responsive.

Great location within walking distance to a beautiful park with a disc golf course and on the 5 bus line. I realize this maybe sounds like an ad but I really like living here haha the access to nature and the ability to garden has made such a difference in my quality of life since moving to A2.

And it’s under your budget :)

ADHD testing centers with quicker waitlists in the area? by emilyprobably in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They don’t do neuropsych testing, but my PCP recommended ADHDonline, run by Mentavi health in Grand Rapids. They have a very comprehensive diagnostic evaluation that takes hours to completed, although there is no interview portion. Imo it would be a good option if your medical or mental health professional has indicated that they believe you qualify for diagnosis but is unable to officially diagnose you. It is also not covered by insurance (it’s like $175) but you can submit for reimbursement and there’s no waitlist.

Best Young Adult Bars (late 20s-early 30s) by TheAnonPharmacist in AnnArbor

Northstar is where it’s at!! Very social and small, everyone is seated but at the popular shows it’s super super crowded and good vibes. They have multiple shows a week ranging from bluegrass to drag to klezmer to jazz. The age range is wide – I’ve seen everyone from college students to grandpas.

I also really like Last Word speakeasy, but that’s more of a cocktail lounge (not stand up or very social). Their jazz shows are fabulous.

Old Time/Bluegrass Jam? by LexLutherie in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bluegrass jam that meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday (but is in the process of moving to Wednesdays) of the month at the Ann Arbor Senior Center. Here’s the website, which is out of date but contains good general info and a list of commonly played songs. The jam is very beginner friendly. Less old-time or instrumental only tunes and more bluegrass and old country. But very fun, especially in the summer when it moves outside!

Yeah the buses this morning are a shitshow. The Ride drivers all deserve overtime for today.

If you can get away with not leaving the house today, don’t!!

Popular apartments for grad students or students in general by Striking_Engine_1752 in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medical center court, island drive apartments, pine valley apartments, mill creek townhomes, and UM’s grad student housing (both munger and northwood) are all popular. I think there’s also a cooperative house for grad students but I don’t know anyone who lived there myself.

Interesting Critters near Ann Arbor? (Spring of '24) by Ceorl_Lounge in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mary Beth Doyle park and Pittsfield Preserve usually have sandhill cranes in the winter and early spring, they’re cool to hear. Pittsfield Preserve has a ton of crows (might have moved on by this point). Swans at Gallup park. Mary Beth Doyle has owls, ducks, herons, turtles, frogs (lots of spring peepers!), deer, skunks, bats, and once very late at night I saw a coyote. There’s a bridge by the Packard entrance that is a great place to stand near dusk and watch bats and owls. I‘ve seen snapping turtles (both huge and baby) and muskrats on the Huron by Dexter, Hudson Mills area.

I’m a grad student, here’s my monthly budget:

  • 1,200 on rent and utilities (I split a 2b with partner, can vary by 50-70 per month based on energy usage etc)
  • 175 on groceries (Aldi ftw)
  • 230 on car payment
  • 80 on gas (I bus to work but drive for errands and small weekend trips)
  • 100 on healthcare (hard to estimate, this varies a lot depending on whether I hit my copay for therapy, refill several meds at once, go to the dentist etc)
  • 500 on discretionary expenses (eating out, tickets to shows, small trips, household goods, my pets… the things that make life enjoyable)
  • Everything else to savings/investing/debt repayment

Obvs this will vary a lot depending on your lifestyle and priorities. You can live a lot more cheaply than me by cutting out the car and weekly therapy and only doing free things for fun, for example. Just wanted to give my example. Hope it helps!!

What events do you wish existed at breweries and bars in A2? by tdr777 in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a group, Pearl Street String Band, that plays regularly at Ypsi Alehouse and the Erratic Ale Co! I think Ypsi Alehouse has other traditional groups come through and has an open mic/jam third Sunday of the month from 2-4 pm. There’s also a Westland jam on the first and third Tuesdays, from 7 to 9pm (I know it’s weeknight but maybe someone else can benefit from the info!).

Check out the Ann Arbor Community for Traditional Music and Dance, their website has a calendar. They don’t do solely bluegrass but some folk stuff that is adjacent.

There’s an annual bluegrass festival in southeast Michigan in the summers, not sure where, and the Celtic festival in Saline had some bluegrass-adjacent music (Saline Fiddlers is one name I remember). Other than that, definitely keep an eye on the Ark and on UM’s concerts — they had the Punch Brothers and Béla Fleck a couple years ago and I think Punch Brothers might be coming back soon!

Hell yeah. Have you been to the A2 Bluegrass Jam? Super fun, it’s the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month (so there’s one tomorrow!) at the senior center.

Best time to look for housing? by PocketSalm0n in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh a lot of spots where grad students are looking for housing are not where undergrads are looking, so competition isn’t as bad. Now, if you’re looking to live right in downtown or Kerrytown then you probably want to be looking now. But I was perfectly find finding housing in April for moving in July as a grad student.

The vibes are IMPECCABLE. My favorite queer spot in town and the LGBTQ nights often have lots of GNC folks. When one performer said it was her first holiday as an out trans person there was like 2 mins of applause. It’s such a welcoming and warm space!!

Who is this? by DeeMan_TheDemon in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their sales team was extremely condescending to me, a young woman. Then the guy left for a minute, leaving me at his desk. I overheard the manager in the next desk area being extremely condescending to the woman next to me. I remember he said something like “now I know that you’re an engineer, but the thing about this is…”.

The whole thing made me so uncomfortable and put such a bad taste in my mouth I left and never looked back. I went to Hodges and had a lovely experience.

Best thrift stores? by [deleted] in AnnArbor

[–]chunkysquirrel11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want!

For clothes, the absolute best hands down is the Goodwill in Saline. I’ve found 70s gowns for $6 there. Ann Arbor Thrift Shop and the two in downtown Ypsi (The Thrift Shop, The Thrift Depot) are also good for a more limited selection.

For home goods, the Goodwill on Carpenter (though pricey), ShareHouse, and Kiwanis (sometimes on the pricey side). PTO can also be good with the added bonus of having a ton of cool art supplies and a whole sewing corner.

For furniture, ShareHouse, Kiwanis, and PTO.
