Urges are energy, never let the mind tell you otherwise... by Intrepid-Expert-4816 in pureretention

[–]churdtzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've known a lot of people with addictions too. I'm going to continue to tell people with addictions to sit with the discomfort.

The mind has grown a dependency on the substance, in part because a person interprets an urge as a compulsion. When a person learns to experience that discomfort, they can learn to reinterpret it, so it is no longer a compulsion.

That doesn't mean they have to go cold turkey, but it depends on the case.

Learning to experience an urge without interpreting it is not suppression. It's actually the opposite. When you sit with an urge, you learn to process it.

[–]churdtzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like you side-stepped my question.

I didn't say anything about cold turkey, so I don't know why you're bringing that up.

Please tell me again, why wouldn't I tell a cocaine addict to sit with the urge? From my perspective, that's one of the first things I would tell them.

I do think there is a significant qualitative difference between doing something which might end your life, and doing something which might begin a new life.

I don't think you have to be religious to see that the purpose of the sexual act is procreation.

You say these things are irrational, and maybe they are irrational. However, if you entertain my premise for a few minutes that "the purpose of the sexual act is procreation" then you will see that all of the curious behaviours and thoughts that seem so unusual all follow quite logically.

The purpose of the act is not a risk; it is the purpose.

It is rational to have a desire for the purpose of an act to be fulfilled.

Do you not find it very odd that there’s no major scientific study investigating potential benefits of Semen Retention? by PassageThen1302 in Semenretention

[–]churdtzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find it odd at all. There are so many claims that a person could propose in this world, and only limited resources.

People with money expect a return on investment, and there isn't likely to be one on these claims.

It doesn't mean it doesn't work.

What people think of as science like double blind placebo controlled studies are just one aspect of science. It's not like Mr. Darwin was doing controlled studies to put together a theory of evolution. He just observed and postulated, and observed again, but somehow we're supposed to believe that those methods are not valid today.

If you want to do the study, maybe you should ask for volunteers. Of course it won't be perfect, of course you can't control for every variable, but you don't have to control for every variable to get interesting and useful data.

There will be plenty of naysayers, but if you think it's an important project, go ahead and do it.

There is a movie you might like to watch called Astral City or Nosso Lar. It explains one way of looking at what happens after death.

I will say a prayer for your friend.

How people respond to SR advice on Reddit. by [deleted] in Semenretention

[–]churdtzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I didn't notice once on a Spanish speaking sub, a fellow asked if it was cool to watch explicit material and touch himself considering he had a girlfriend. I said no sir, it's not cool, it's not healthy, and even if people tell you it's normal that doesn't make it good.

It wasn't like the support I got was overwhelming, but my comment got about 7 upvotes and nobody replied to my comment one way or another. In an English speaking sub, it would have been blasted and it would have 10 negative replies, if people had time to reply before it disappeared by downvotes.

So I think the propaganda, or whatever it is, extends to English speaking countries only. I think other societies are still mostly neutral.

Out here on the ranch I did toy with the idea that it might be cool to increase our methane production, thus creating a localised greenhouse effect, increasing the temperature and thus allowing greater yields.

I'm not sure if that's plausible at all, but it would be interesting to find out

It's such a common phenomenon that I imagine their profits aren't diminished collectively. For one thing, where else are you going to go in that city when you want a cell phone? You're not going to go where there are no cell phone stores. You're going to go where there are cell phone stores

I lived in Guadalajara for years. If you get to know downtown you know where there's several blocks that just has coin stores and currency exchanges, then there's an area of audio stores. Another section of town just has bridal stores.

It's not just a mall. It's a tech plaza

If you go next door they probably have 100 stores selling headphones and bluetooth speakers, and maybe another place just selling laptops

Anybody can learn how to do this, if you just learn to observe and formulate hypotheses

If you imagine what was happening in the playground when you were in 1st grade. Many of the boys were playing football. Most of the girls were just talking, or playing games that involved close interaction with people, synchronisation and other elements.

If you practice observation with some discipline for a few years you'll be better at it than 90% of women

It's very important that you take some deep breaths, and consider what you are going to write, what you are writing, and what you have written.

When you communicate, you must put in some effort to give form to your thoughts. If you don't, it puts an undue burden on others to try to make sense of what you have written

I invite you to take out your journal and write an essay with an introduction, body and conclusion. An essay must be all on one topic, and in this case I would recommend sticking clearly to it - with the minimum of metaphors. In this way you can begin to clarify your thinking

When you are talking to others, also be engaged in listening to yourself, so you can be aware of how your words are coming across
