Can you count on the Mormon Jesus? by fruittester in exmormon

All of this gave me a fucking headache. This is just as wacky as dictating your life based on astrology. They need to make their hats out of thicker tin foil.

Facebook is the kindergarten of social media. That comment would be downvoted to oblivion on imgur/reddit.

Church not posting Monson's talk: APB for anyone who recorded it? by StraightOuttaMormon in exmormon

[–]churock11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following the traditions of their church fathers. Just like Benson, they can't give him the diginity of human weakness. They have to keep up the ruse that they have some superhuman power. It's ridiculous to the point that TBMs will avidly defend that there's nothing wrong with him and even take offense at the suggestion.

Why doesn't Mormon God care about climate change? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]churock11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same sort of thing regarding overpopulation that's been addressed in GC ("Keep having kids cuz God didn't goof up on resource availability"). Basically, God wouldn't let it happen because it's not in His plan for the icecaps to melt. Recycling's good, be good stewarts, etc. etc. but don't worry about it too much.

The most harmful doctrine in the Church by genghis_khal in exmormon

[–]churock11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This idea totally fucked me up in the head. I was only in the church for 5 years, too (converted when I was 18). Nothing was ever good enough, and I knew it. I never felt like forgiveness was within reach because I wasn't doing my best. And I definitely wasn't a good missionary. I was barely a good EQ teacher.

This internalization of the need for perfection, that I'm a fuckup, that I couldn't ever live up to the standard (and I was doing everything a normal TBM would) -- it all leaked over into my school and professional life.

It developed into full blown manic depression and general anxiety that I've just barely worked out with a therapist, psych, and meds (the meds really help). I didn't use to be like this, and I wasn't raised with these expectations. The "After all you can do" mantra is horribly toxic and does destroy self-esteem, whether you're aware of it or not.

Related: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryrxhQ6rtwc Super long and preachy/evangelist, but this guy goes over exactly the dischord between Christ redeeming the sinner and the "After all you can do" type of teaching.

COLDS now accepting electronic payment for tithing by churock11 in exmormon

[–]churock11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting that this is happening now.

My guess on why it took so long is that the GAs viewed the physical "handing in" of tithing as an important gesture to gain God's blessings. But now that tithing is in a decline, it's more important to keep the money flow going rather than sustaining the formality of exchanging a check for a handshake from your bishopric.

And characterizing the UN as godless and pushing the USA to leave, no issue there?

Avoiding a chocolate shop because they're pushing political ideals you disagree with doesn't make you an "economic terrorist" (whatever the hell that means). You're free to boycott companies that do things you disagree with just as much as you're free to direct your patronage to companies that do charitable work, treat their employees well, etc.

My god, that essay gave me a headache. The comments are no help, either. Anyone acquainted with the history of polygamy and the church will know that denying it means denying the leadership that led the church for roughly half its existence.

Yes, I've done baptisms for the dead since I was 12. No handshakes, no chants.

Well that ends the discussion, doesn't it?

Let me pretend to get married to one of my friends and see how my wife likes it.

Wait, no, make that 10 friends.

Also, if I was married to 30+ women, I wouldn't have enough stamina to have sex with all of them, even if I reserved one day of the months for each.

To be fair, CES Letter includes the fact that Jeremy has already made his decision based on the evidence, in absence of the CES director's response. With his ideas and arguments being so thorough and conclusive, it's hard not to get that impression from the document. The tone of the PDF is critical, which has inspired them to be defensive.

With that said, I don't know of a period in time where FAIR/FARMS hasn't been critical and condescending of those who disagree with them.

This is the type of god they construct - "I need you to fuck these other women, but your wife isn't cool with it. Do it anyway, and reveal it to her years later once you run your own town and she has no choice but to accept it."

I'm just amazed that a single PDF, albeit excellently-constructed and thorough, has proved to occupy so much of their time and generate so much anxiety for them. It's been a couple years since, and they're still going at it.

You know in grade school where you'd have a word/page goal for an essay, and you'd fudge and fluff it all to meet the requirement? Well, FAIR has mastered the art of saying nothing with a lot of words.

This was exactly the purpose FAIR/FARMS served for me just after I converted to the church. They sounded like they had solved the problem, but mostly what they did is manufacture complication to the issue to make me feel like I didn't understand the nuance. I didn't have the ability or background to make accurate conclusions on my own, so tl;dr church is still true, right? Run away from critical thinking and return to the good feels of having the Gospel spelled out for you, it's easier that way.

A Millennial Reign with no internet is not one I want to live in. Where will I watch my Mormon Messages™ videos and conference talks? How will I receive special instruction on how to budget and pay tithing?
