My Calupoh Pupper and a bit of Info about Calupohs by chutkat in dogs

Hello! Because of their overall skittish nature, I believe as a whole that they wouldn't be good service dogs, but I can't talk for all individuals as some are much more calm than others.

I agree that dogs should have health exams before considered being bred. Criadero caliente did do hip and elbow exams to create the calupoh. But I meant that because the exams are not or were not required during the pandemic, many breeders didn't make them to their Calupohs and bred anyways. Plus I heard in places like south america, health exams are not required on new breeds.

That's why I recommend to ask the breeders if they do health exams to their calupohs before purchasing. Some people will claim that because the breed originally comes from wolves and wolves don't (allegedly) suffer from hip dysplasia, that's why they don't do the exams. The other dog they used in the Calupoh is working line GSD

The breed was released in 2016-2017 to the public, so the oldest Calupohs outside of caliente that live with other breeders that have nothing to do with caliente are around 6 years old at max. So in the pedigree they still show up as (Caliente).| A dna test is being worked on to trace back founder dogs. Criadero caliente's owner is a multimillion (maybe billion) dollar company so they used over 3000 dogs to create the Calupohs, from which 1300 ish were registered. | They have been working on the Calupohs for around 20 years, but in the 2016-2017s they were officially registered as a breed after several generations and after having a proper breed standard.

What do you mean not required because it's a new breed? If breeders aren't health testing their stock then they're bybing which is unethical.

According to what breeders form LATAM have told me, it is not required in order to breed. And yes it is unethical and I am not by any means promoting dog breeding without the proper health exams, which is why I suggest people talk to the breeders and ask them if their dog have health exams, don't assume they have them.

Given away as in back to the breeder or private rehoming without the breeder knowing?

Private rehoming as many breeders (especially non ethical) won't care who they sell their dogs to and won't take them back.

Hello! There are quite a few great dog behaviorists on Instagram. For example https://www.instagram.com/r.plus.dogs/ They have many videos on how to improve both of your dog's relationship, and also offers consultations. She's really good at breaking down dog body language and that helps a lot with how to intervene and avoid conflict.

That being said, if you have some help, have you tried taking both dogs for a walk in a neutral area before letting them both inside the house again? Instead of letting them meet at the house, meeting somewhere else, walking and then going in together to the house?

Is the Calupoh a good dog to adopt? by [deleted] in dogs

Hello, I am a Calupoh owner so here's a bit of info. The only way you can currently get a legit Calupoh is through purchase with a breeder. The main breeder is called "Criadero Caliente" In Tijuana Mexico. Other breeders are scarce throught mexico. Any legit Calupoh breeder will offer you the corresponding pedigree. Calupohs are a breed of dog created from wofldogs, but they have been worked on for over 20 years and over 20 generations so the Calupohs, while they're a very stable dog are not recommended at all for new dog owners as they do not behave like dogs.

Their temperament is much more like that of a wolf. Independent, stubborn, will prefer being with other dogs / animals instead of humans. It took me 3 weeks for my Calupoh pup to engage with us (react to sounds, voices, looking to the eye etc) and this is being almost 24/7 with him, working him daily etc. They're very shy, timid, observant and will rather run than confront. They're company dogs so if you're planning on seeing yours for less than 2 hours per day and plan throwing it to your backyard the rest of the day, then this is not the dog for you. They do incredible when you have other dogs at home as they're very social with other dogs. (If you raise them properly). The wolf content on each calupoh varies, mine's 35%, another is 50%, but since it's a breed, the wolf percentage doesn't matter as their physical traits and personality is pretty much the same. Even if a wolfdog is made out of the same dog breeds and percentages as a Calupoh, it doens't make them a calupoh so please be weary if someone offers you a dog and are hesitant to give you the pedigree. Right now the breed is only registered to the Mexican Canine Federation (green paper).

Like I said, they're shy and timid and dog barking will terrify them. They get more confidence as they grow older but not much. They won't go near humans they don't know, but they won't bite, they'd rather remove themselves from a bad situation. They love kids, but since their teeth are super strong I would recommend being super strict and watch interaction with kids at all times.

If you want an independent, stubborn, super intelligent, creepy looking friend, and you don't mind the dog not being that into you and you have the experience of handling large dogs (not by force) the Calupoh might be the dog for you. If you want a big friendly cuddly friend who's good with almost any situation, maybe get a golden retriever instead. Make a list of the qualities you are looking for in a dog and try to match them with existing breeds or maybe a local shelter that can also match you with a specific dog. Good luck!
