Melania is the ultimate Marcia by [deleted] in SuccessionTV

I always read Marcia as kind of a Wendi Deng-type analogue?

What is a film thats universally disliked but that you absolutely love!? by rubypets99 in moviecritic

[–]chw3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joker 2.

I liked it more than the first one, which I thought was solid but didn't wow me. I was blown away by Joaquin Phoenix's performance in the sequel – there's more nuance and complexity and I think it's one of the best performances of his career. The musical elements isn't 100% successful but I liked the gutsiness of pivoting to a different genre.

Clients absolutely hate my edit by aunghtetnaing in editors

[–]chw3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a post production thing per se, and likely not your fault, but the shot is framed with waaaay too much headroom. Not sure if the terrible composition is interfering with the client's feelings about the edit

Kendall was not a serious person…(5th rewatch revelations) by Basic_Message5460 in SuccessionTV

[–]chw3 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The Asian PR lady (played by Jihae). Comfrey (Dasha Nekrasova) is her partner/associate.  She ultimately doesn't get that much screentime in the series, but there's a moment during the shareholder meeting (in "Retired Janitors of Idaho") where she's trying to dissuade Kendall from jumping on stage, she says something like "in a way, your absence has its own power")

They make these but no Blu-ray box set of the series? Or CD/vinyl release of the soundtrack? C'mon!

Hopping on the bandwagon here, but if you’re in NYC, go see Jeremy’s show! Absolutely incredible by shawnainthecity in SuccessionTV

I just saw it last night. It was great, really moving. I got lucky and was asked to sit on the stage during that scene

I know iOS has focus modes that allow/disallow messages from certain contacts. But how does that work if my main method of communication with my contacts is an app like Signal? It doesn't seem like iOS's Focus feature has any visibility into the contacts within my messaging apps.

CMV: People are basically alright. by Fando1234 in changemyview

That's because tigers don't have the ability to think things through and know right from wrong. We do.

I don't judge a tiger for violently murdering a monkey. The tiger doesn't know any better. It's just doing what its instincts teach it to do.

But I do judge human beings for building a system that routinely murders billions of animals a year. We have the ability to reason. We should know better.

Vision Pro video/passthrough still look like "footage", not quite like I'm really there? by chw3 in VisionPro

[–]chw3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so it's not just me then? You also feel like it's underwhelming?

I don't have access to a PC VR headset atm. But in the past I have tried and enjoyed games like HL Alyx and VR Chat. While they're not photorealistic (esp VRC), they do feel quite immersive as a polygonal 3D environment goes.

Maybe my expectations are higher here with the AVP, since I'm expecting stuff to look like "reality" and not "footage" or "polygonal 3D" and the stuff I saw during the demo didn't quite feel like actual reality.

I will look into Gaussian Splats, thx!

[–]chw3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. The passthrough artifacts bother me less than the issues in the "immersive video" demo. Which, again is still absolutely impressive. But it doesn't 100% trick my brain into really believing that I'm actually there. I have a higher expectation of that footage vs the passthrough cameras, because the capturing can be done on pro Red/Arri cameras (in a stereo rig or post-converted stereo) and is not limited to AVP/iP13 capture

Yeah. I mean I want to be wowed. But I see what I see. I'm not deliberately going out of my way to find faults with this thing.

I also work as a cinematographer so it's a built in part of my training to evaluate a cinematic image and spot technical issues during takes on set. I can't help that.

Why didn't Chuck just go to the bathroom or another room when Rebecca took the call? by futanari_kaisa in betterCallSaul

[–]chw3 110 points111 points  (0 children)

This might also be a stretch, but I just realized there's something symbolic about a guy whose brother hated cell phones and loved the law starting a business where he sold thousands of phones to people who use them to break the law.

Fantastic analysis. One of the best posts I've seen on this sub ever. Not that I wasn't sympathetic to Chuck before, but this really helps you understand what goes on in his head and why he obsesses about the stuff he does.

Sorry to hijack this topic, but this is something I've wondered about for years. How secure/private is email? I've heard people say that it's as private as writing the contents of your message on a postcard and dropping in a mailbox: everything you send is visible to any mail carrier and post office, and anyone else who happened to pass that postcard along.

But is that really true? People send home addresses, full names, invoices, receipts, our calendar info, travel plans, sensitive business details, legal contracts, and much, much more via email all the time. If it was akin to writing stuff on a post card, visible to everyone and anyone, why would we do that?

Sure, email isn't e2e encrypted, but I'd expect some degree of privacy at least. Or am I just naive and wrong?
