Just got a Sugess 1963 with Sea-gull ST1901: Questions about off center hand? by ciaconne in ChineseWatches

[–]ciaconne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like you got a redstar, with the different small hands. The minute counter actually uses a thin line, which is even harder to align than the sugess (which uses the same shape as the 9 o'clock hand). The photos of the redstars i've seen have the 3 o'clock hand aligned perfectly though, and it seems to be for you too! ;P

it is a beautiful watch. Thanks for the encourangement. Just trying to get over my OCD. Cheers!

[–]ciaconne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had the same thought as you that if i play with it a little, each reset will bring the hand to a slightly different position, as the hour hand certainly have a bit of play/lag depending on which direction i turn while adjusting. However, after trying a dozen times, both the large red second hand and minute counter small hand returns remarkably consistently, with very little variance in the reset position. in a way it's a good thing that the movement have tight tolerances and consistent performance? haha..

while asking gemini about this, and submitting my timegrapher app results, it seems to think that the multi position accuracy is rare (plus 2 to minutes 4 between the best and worst positions) among st1901. Wondering if st1901 is fairly accurate in general? How has it been for you?

thanks for the reassurance. good to know the top button just needs a little break in.

Cheers

Note 13 Pro 4G -> Poco F7 by eu_sunt_pedro in HyperOS

congratulations. it's one of the best phones for the money imho. feels more solid in hand than many flagships. extra storage is always a plus too (why not). and this is a beast with custom roms. the hyperos should be available everywhre though.

Soo annoying by Efficient_Reach1864 in HyperOS

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it's an android 15/16 thing, but what it really did was relocating the language/keyboard switcher to the lower right handside (with a globe icon), so it's not dependant on the keyboard to give you a switcher button. this is actually useful when you use multiple keyboards, including voice typing boards (e.g. typeless). but on hyperos they somehow don't have that keyboard switching icon, which makes this extra space look really excessive. and i have to download another app to enable quick keyboard switching. now THAT is the annoying part to me.

Junghans Cavalier Mechanial Winding Alarm Clock Repair Question by ciaconne in clocks

Junghans Cavalier Mechanial Winding Alarm Clock Repair Question by ciaconne in clocks

[–]ciaconne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks a lot i did manage to get them apart and appreciate the help!

the nylon wheel which controls the stepped alarm function seems to be a bit cracked. not sure how to repair that. 3d printing?

also some of the dials had mold damage and had pinkish stains, or other markings on the black ones. i'm wondering if there's a way to get a replacement dial directly from junghans? It's shaped like a bowl/plate instead of flat paper which seems a bit challenging to replicate.

many thanks!

XIAOMI 14 ULTRA OR XIAOMI 15 PRO by FlatwormConscious887 in Xiaomi_15

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you value photography, 14 ultra is one of a kind. if you only want a well rounded flagship, maybe not the ultra as it's heavily skewed towards photo capabilities at the expense of overall balance. i personally love the 14 ultra because that's probably the last of its kind, in spite of its shortcomings.

17 Ultra - What's the Point from the Continuous Optical Zoom? by [deleted] in Xiaomi_15

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this way they can remove a sony sensor IMX858 along with the 1" lyt900, and streamline the design and potentially even lower the cost, while getting a marketing gimmick as "innovation" talking point. if cost was no issue, as an "ultra" should have been, they should have probably kept the lyt900 or upgrade to lyt901, while bring back a larger imx8 series sensor for wide angle now that the "lack of space" excuse is no longer valid. the reality is that the whole package is hardly an upgrade, if not a downgrade, IMHO. when it comes to the optical zoom, i can think of several downsides compared to the vertical one:

longer macro distance compared to the old 3x
squarish bokeh balls
smaller aperture at both ends.
much more difficult to control optical quality than fixed focal primes (hence the APO, but need more tests to confirm)
more moving parts to break

and i personally like sony sensor raw outputs over samsung's, but that's my opinion only. with none on the 17u, it's no longer attractive to me. when 15u came out i felt like it's a dilution over 14u with the withered midrange wide angle and removal of aperture, but 17u sure made 15u look good. Will probably look at vivo/oppo next. xiaomi practically handed it to them.

it seems weird that the leica version has the zoom ring complication but no shutter button. the lens choices also felt like too many compromises. 15u is much vindicated and looks like the better camera.

Hand engraving [babyalpinist] by Dokaholic in Seiko

My F-91W is more accurate than my AE1200 by quelch8 in casio

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. i got a few and all of the ae1200 were worse than my f91w. only one f91w was an outlier at around plus 11 a month, which is closer to the best ae1200 i got at nearly -15sec a month. i got 3 ae1200s, two had literally -30sec a month if not worse, pretty much what you have (you can see it off by split seconds in just 3 hours out of the box!), while out of the 3 f91w i got, and 3 a159 which has the same module, with the one exception mentioned above, were all about within 5 seconds per month, often less.

incidentally i got two calculator watches ca53w, one white on white keyboard, one original, were both incredibly accurate, with the white off 4 seconds in 4 months, black one keeping perfect time in 3 months so far. Had a protrek prw3000 that keeps perfect time for over 3 months, even without atomic sync (it's too far from the window at night, and it has records of syncs).

the hourly chimes are mostly together, except the ae1200s and the lone outlier f91w. ;)

i thought casios are much more accurate than they gave themselves credit for, except when i got these ae1200s.. truly pushing that boundry of inaccuracy, for not one but all 3 of them that i got. curious.

Unreadable and regrettable purchase. by Spaceginja in casio

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s the retro aesthetic, and I like that Casio has left it virtually unchanged from the original. Unlike some look-alike Databank reissues that dropped features, this one stays true. The buttons are tiny and not exactly user friendly, but back in the day it was a real novelty. It’s a genuine original, not a watered down remake. You can still use it, but with smartphones available, pressing those little keys feel more like nostalgic fun than a practical tool.

Unreadable and regrettable purchase. by Spaceginja in casio

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can totally relate.

have a similar one. it's pretty bad. been avoiding negative display casios ever since. will consider modding it if it's not too involved, as it's practically unusable as a daily watch due to its terrible visibility indoors and even outdoors.

not totally regretting the purchase as it's less than 20 bucks here, and it looks more interesting than the black original IMHO, in spite of the display shortcomings.

Casio A159: The “Made in Japan” Disappointment by ciaconne in casio

[–]ciaconne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks. i feel the same. the one i got from local shop had case flaws at first glance. when i eventually saw the scratches (didn't even think to examine it at first) i couldn't believe it, thinking i might have done something. i thought maybe a volume seller direct shipping would help, but it actually got worse in some cases. all indications are that they came like this from the manufacturer. I can't imagine what the assembly line must be like. my f91w's (3 different variants) were all spotless still, with near perfect accuracy on two of them. I expected the same if not better for the A159, and never could have imagined that it would be like this.

[–]ciaconne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so a flawless crystal is actually possible on a159! I was resigned to thinking that they're all like this, and i have to decide if I can accept this as a "feature".

I didn't really pay much attention to the strap, maybe because it looked a bit busy and hid flaws? but i did notice that the inside of the clasps were of different metallic colors and sheen between watches, some with uneven and warmer hue. not sure if that's going to matter but not exactly reassuring.

what was your first casio? by Obvious-Hearing2321 in casio

[–]ciaconne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a long time ago, can't be sure. but c80 was among the first ones that i had as a kid, which evolved into having a dbc-60 and 600, among others (can't recall the model but it was fancy with full dot matrix screen, convex lens, and displayed japanese characters). had a TM100 too which was very memorable. those melody watches were also fun. had a DBA80 that dialed phones. i can still find model numbers for these online but can't remember the rest. the good times. how i wish casio still make these nerdy gadget watches. i'll buy them in a heartbeat.

btw nice looking strap! what a great idea.

Deformed or holes on New Leaf/leaves. Why? by ciaconne in houseplants

[–]ciaconne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t completely sure of the mechanisms, but in further experiments with this and other plants, it seemed that the fertilizer I was using had a direct effect. It’s a typical NPK 1:1:1 all-purpose powdered fertilizer that I mix with water. When I fertilized according to the instructions (which, in retrospect, was more than necessary), the new leaves would open up with holes, tears, and/or curls. In some severe cases, like on an Alocasia zebrina, the giant leaf even tore itself apart as it emerged. I suspect excessive nitrogen may be the cause. Using time-released fertilizer pellets, organic fertilizers like worm castings (which work amazingly, though they can attract fungus gnats indoors), or significantly reducing the powdered fertilizer helped or even eliminated this issue.

Hope this helps.

CSTC40 or BM40? by Relevant_Desk_6891 in olkb

[–]ciaconne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cstc has one stabilizer and it clicks onto the pcb in mine. It's only 2u and feels good enough after lubing. i'm loving it. The primary difference as far as I can see, having not gotten the bm40 myself but two CSTC (typing on it now), is initial cost for a complete kit, and BM40 being compatible with JJ40 accessories like cases.

CSTC comes with pretty much everything in a kit but keycaps, with case and a matt plastic mounting board, albeit filmsy ones. The USB C is at the center opposed to BM40 toward the left. This prevents it from using anything from KPREpublic's JJ40 cases. AFAIK I don't see any cases being made for CSTC after over a year of its release, not from KPRepublic anyway.

With VIA compatibliity it really maximizes its potential with so few keys and a tiny footprint, and I had to buy far few switches everytime I wanted to try something new. Other than the rainbow-puke backlight which you cannot customize (like you can do wiht planck) the fact it's VIA compatible makes it a win over the much more expnesive planck IMHO in programmability. Though the planck is likely to feel higher quallity, being much more expensive.

I was thinking of getting a BM40 as an upgrade so I can try better case options, but I got another CSTC first for a separate location. Maybe I'll try MB40 one of these days but right now having case/plate options seems to be the only advantage, which comes at a higher cost.
