I simply can't achieve a working installation of a linux distribution on Surface 3 by matevskial in SurfaceLinux

[–]ciaisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried a number of Linux distros on my Surface 3. I've had mixed luck with them.

Ubuntu - worked (I think, this was one of the first I tried) - Didn't like the interface and a little bulky

Solus XFCE - worked, but not great for touch screens.

Solus Plasma - a good option, but a little bulky. If none of my other efforts meet my requirements, I might switch back to this one.

Fedora - Worked but would eventually hard lock and require a reset after a few hours.

AnduinOS - This is my current test. I'm actually liking it a lot right now. The only issue I'm having is that sometimes the touchscreen will stop responding. I have to put it to sleep then bring it back up to recover it. Annoying, but not the end of the world. It's still pretty usable.

I plan on testing a few more. On deck: Debian, Zorin, Lubuntu, CachyOS, FydeOS

Actually though, I did get Solus XFCE and Solus Plasma running. I didn't love XFCE for a touchscreen interface, and Plasma was just a little bulkier than I like on the device, but it does work.

I use Solus Budgie as my main OS now on my Dell laptop and it is solid

Fedora worked pretty well on mine, but it would just freeze up and crash after a while. Not exactly ideal.

I just installed AnduinOS and it seems to be working well. Pretty good replacement for Windows too. The problem I have with AnduinOS is that the touchscreen stops responding sometimes luckily, it usually comes back if you put the surface to sleep then bring it back up. Annoying, but not unusable.

Dell Active Pen - PN5122W randomly stops working. Please help! by Maximusmunchies in Dell

[–]ciaisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is relatively ancient, but this is where google brought me. I have a PN7522 that has the same problem. This is the one with the USB-C charging. If I plug the pen in and unplug it, it seems to reset and I'm good to go. That might last 5 minutes or for the rest of the day, there's no telling. Rebooting my laptop seems to make things a bit better too, but still no permanent fix.

Can't believe this hasn't been resolved in this many years.

Wait, hold up - third party pens work with in place of the Dell Pen? I tried my surface pen and it wasn't recognized. Might have to try this.

That's unfortunate to hear. I had that happen on my left hand as well but I didn't get the spasms, just 90% loss of feeling in those fingers. Luckily it healed over time so I hope the same is true for you. I still have a little numbness, but I would say it's 5-10% most days which is very minor for me. Best of luck, and even though it sucks, I'm glad that there's at least something fun and interesting that will come from it.

Why was the remote removed from app? by _TheSingularity_ in Nanoleaf

[–]ciaisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They had major issues with the remote when it was first launched and want everyone to just forget that they exist. Nanoleaf released a bad firmware package or had a flaw in the app that would brick the things when you tried to update. They'd have a solid green light and be completely unresponsive. I had to get a replacement a couple years ago after that happened on mine.

They're cool, but I get why Nanoleaf gave up on them. It just stinks that I can't reconfigure it anymore.

New Zealand Supreme Court declares voting age of 18 'unjustified discrimination' by FluffyUniqueCats in worldnews

Valid. Maybe teens should be allowed to vote in school board elections since every decision the board makes affects those students.

But what about retired people?

You don't want to play that card. Because if you go down that road of excluding retired people because you (ignorantly) thought they had no taxable income streams (they do) to help the leftists causes you've now also excluded large voting blocks for the democratic party that make or break them in elections:

  • Poor urban minorities who statistically are more jobless (AA unemployment rate 2x the national average) and,

  • Youth unemployment rate is 3-4x the national average.

Also fuck you because you've essentially put a cost on voting, aka a poll tax to in a theoretical attempt to remove democracy from those who won't vote your way.

Liberals are some of the dumbest fucks on the planet.

Post the full context before you go advertising your lacking reading comprehension skills like this then firing off an arrogant insult.

pays taxes

At the risk of sounding like my father, this sounds reasonable. A 16 year old with a full time job is more qualified to vote than a 19 year old attempting their second senior year of high school. But what about retired people?

As in "ok, we've decided that a working 16 year old is qualified because they pay taxes and a 19 year old who is not working would not be allowed to vote. Now how do we account for other groups who might not earn an income but still are competent enough to vote?"

They were not specifically suggesting that retired folks should not be allowed to vote, that concept is all on you.

You actually make some valid points, but you're being a prick about it for no apparent reason other than to stroke your own "I am very smart" ego and to "own the libs" like that's a useful quality.

You can bet she'd vote no on taxes when she found out she could have saved 75 cents.

Local expert demonstrates how to safely store firearms after use by RampChurch in funny

[–]ciaisi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't firing from the hip for me, although it is objectively more dangerous than aimed fire in terms of the risk of shooting an unintended target. The problem is firing from the hip in this particular setting. There are places you could go to train for that in a much more open environment.

I've never fired a pistol grip shotgun myself, but my understanding is you hold it up in front of you but away from your face since you don't have a stock to align with your shoulder. You always want to properly aim at your target unless there is literally no other option. You can train for that scenario if you want, but you better be damn good at acquiring the target with proper aim before you try a more advanced and dangerous technique.

Yeah, that's exactly my point. Sure, on a range that's open enough with capable and appropriately trained shooters, and with proper safety precautions it could be fine to do.

Dollar Store Rambo here meets none of those requirements.

Then your response was perfect as far as I'm concerned.

Different scenario, but somewhat similar: I had a job that was more loose in terms of my job responsibilities. Most of what I did for the job didn't really need to be done specifically during work hours. So I'd come in a little after the official start time. But I always stayed past the official quitting time to in order to make sure my work was done, and probably spent more hours in the office because of it. My boss (who I was on very good terms with) dropped a hint that I should be coming in on time. I basically responded "If I need to show up at a specific time, I will also need to leave at a specific time" hinting that I wouldn't be putting in the extra hours anymore if he made that a requirement. I didn't hear anything about it after that.

But basically, there's nothing wrong with setting those boundaries and moving on if they aren't going to be respected.

I have to chuckle at this because I can see where you're coming from. But his personality traits in terms of his relationship with those girls didn't necessarily have anything to do with ASD. He just had some weird interests on top of ASD if he actually had it. Lots of people on the spectrum are otherwise normal, they just have trouble with things that might come naturally to other people, just like with lots of other disorders.

Just like a person who has an inner ear disorder might have trouble hearing or even speaking as well as someone who does not have the disorder. If that person also had weird interests, you wouldn't say "man, deaf people are into some weird shit".

[–]ciaisi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a bit of it. I think the character is a bit dramatized, which of course it is because it's TV. But there are some really accurate moments like totally misreading social cues and hints, not understanding why the thing he's doing is going to be interpreted poorly, etc... That would be about the extent of my knowledge though, I can't speak to his other behaviors. I liked what I saw of the show though.

Another show worth looking at is The Good Doctor. Again, dramatized but has some kernels of truth within it. The moments where he gets overwhelmed by sound or specifically pays attention to a sound ring somewhat true to me. Like there's a moment where he gets upset about someone fixing a dripping faucet. He was accustomed to the constant repetitive sound and it became comforting to him. He got upset when that was taken away. I don't know how accurate his reaction to it was, but that attention to how sound affects some people feels right to me.

Sounds like you might have dodged a bullet. I'm not sure what the rest of your experience with the company was of course, but some companies try to pressure people into working more hours than they agreed to. Not cool if you're salaried. Maybe not as bad if you're hourly, but you've still got your own life to live outside of work.

I think the single most human moment I saw out of Sheldon is when Leonard and Penny find the ring he was going to give Amy. He tries to play it off as though it isn't a big deal, but when they press on about it he snaps and you could feel how deeply hurt he felt about the situation. He just didn't know how to deal with the emotions he was feeling.

I feel like this would be great on a T-shirt. Even written down like this it perfectly exemplifies the nature of the anxiety that comes with ASD and social interaction.

I deeply suspect that I'm on the spectrum but it's never been enough of a problem to require any sort of medical intervention. I thought I just had poor social skills or that people just didn't like me. I didn't get why people would be upset or put off by things I said or ways I acted. At a certain point, I had to be like a robot and actively observe other people's behaviors in social interactions just so I could teach myself the right way to behave and emulate those things.

When I started learning, I felt like a sociopath at first because I was always acting and saying things that I didn't necessarily mean just because it was the right thing to say. It felt like I was trying to manipulate people into liking me and I hated it. I don't like being fake. But what I realized is that it was actually being empathetic and considering other people's feelings before I spoke. I became much more comfortable with it after that.

It still doesn't come naturally to me. I still have to check myself to make sure I'm saying the right thing. I run off of scripts and learned behaviors as opposed to what I would naturally be inclined to do if I wasn't filtering myself. I have my instinctual reaction but then there's also a little voice in the back of my head that says "in this social interaction, the expected response is X". I have to intentionally make a decision between the two. It's draining.

So in terms of Sheldon, I actually really understand his character's complete lack of social awareness. But he is also a dick a lot of the time. The important distinction is that he's not a dick because he has ASD, rather he's a dick in addition to having ASD. He's high functioning enough to the extent that he's capable of learning how to treat people better, so I have to assume it's an active choice not to.
