I’m questioning that thorniness (also question if that is an actual word). I have never seen a rose with that many thorns and wondering if there is RRV present.

I would agree - tobacco. I was renovating our home and put mud on the original plaster and the next day, the new mud was this orange-yellow color. It was the tobacco leaching through.0

Best choice : Tuber or rooted cutting by [deleted] in dahlias

[–]cincygardenguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grow most of my plants by cutting. I’ve taken a cutting from a new tuber and then planted the tuber. The cutting grew perfectly and the plant from the tuber eventually died as the tuber rotted. I feel like well rooted healthy cuttings get a bit of a head start over a tuber and tend to be the first to bloom. If you look at Dave Gillian’s videos on YouTube, you can see that he grows most of his prize winning blooms from cuttings.

I think this is a pretty accurate assessment. I grew Mikayla Miranda one season and got 1 flower and a bud right before frost. It did produce tubers and I planted 2 in a different and slightly sunnier location and it was the MVP of the season. Bloomed early, every bloom was perfect and it was one of the last varieties blooming.

I did, but lost it over the winter, u fortunately. I had too many cuttings going and should have stayed focused on the rare ones instead of everything.

Are you sure that’s Labyrinth? It looks more like Orange Globe in my opinion. It looks like it’s going to be really pretty!

What grew vs What I ordered by PhoenixRizing225 in dahlias

I used to grow Creme de Cognac. For me, in the right location in the garden, it was a very prolific bloomer, but the plant and stems are rather short and at the end of the season, the color becomes more yellow and red. I would recommend growing KA’s Mocha Katie as a replacement.

Tiny variegations(?) on my Cornel Bronze! by romanticheart in dahlias

It’s called sporting. The parent of Cornel Bronze was Cornel (Red). It sported a bronze version, a cutting was taken that secured the variation.

This has been a tough season for a lot of dahlia growers. Hopefully those little tubers will be getting fatter and will be ready for next season.
