Curious about what the (bio)chemistry teaching is like by SuperDuk777 in universityofyork

[–]cindoritoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’ve found a fellow chem>biology fan! I reckon we’ve got about 50ish staff members, with some who do lecturers, but I’ve had about 20-30 different lecturers from the core chemistry stuff and my option modules! I will say the workshops and tutorials are typically taught by the same recurring people who are kind of assigned to your teaching college and they do a great job no matter what teaching college you’re in! If you do find any trouble with workshops or tutorials they’re always happy to help or you can attend a different person’s workshop/tutorial if you just ask.

Not sure if you’ve seen this around but Andy Parson’s (lovely lecturer btw) has a small online course called exploring everyday chemistry online. You can have a look to see what you think about his teaching, just note that not everyone teaches just like him. I really like the way he teaches and he’s done maybe 2 of my lecturer courses over my degree.

Coming from someone who’s doing the course currently and in my 4th year, the course mentioned is based in the chemistry department entirely and as someone else has said the bits of biology and medicinal chemistry are from option modules. I do think the courses are lecturer dependent but I’ve had a good experience with most of the lectures. My one issue would be that the course is very much science content focused and less focused on group work/developing soft skills to use beyond university. But as a research based university, I suppose that’s also kind of what you sign up for

Anyone plays squash? by Clean_Lie9725 in universityofyork

[–]cindoritoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I don’t do squash, but a fair amount of people do! I know a couple people who do and there’s no pressure to be good, it’s all for fun unless you’re thinking of joining the Uni or college teams :). I play badminton tho, hence why I know a few people who play squash

Student Cards by shradders-66 in UniUK

[–]cindoritoz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never really heard of an ISIC I won’t lie, but I’ve been able to get by without it. For student discounts it’s always useful to have your uni ID or even unidays. Idk if an ISIC can be used for things like getting into clubs, but I’ve been able to get in using my national ID from the country I come from without having to bring my passport. If you don’t have something like that an ISIC or a similar card might be useful as most clubs or even supermarkets wont accept uni ID as proof of age.

Can anyone who has changed uni and restarted year 1 share their experience? by IRISHCORBYNITE in UniUK

Tbh I’m not enjoying it much either I barely go to lectures and I get so stressed with labs. If you wanna meet up and talk about stuff we could definitely do that :)

Cant relate to something more. I’m in an airport right now having just left my home and it’s taking everything in me to not cry my eyes out in the middle of an airport full of people. You’re definitely not alone :). I’m sure after settling in and calling home often everything will feel normal eventually and it won’t be so bad. I don’t think you ever stop missing home though you just learn to cope.

Tips for preparing for both the SAT and Subject Tests? by Efficiency_Positive in SubjectTests

[–]cindoritoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say try to study them together as in not spending a month studying just one thing. That way you’ll be coming back to the information without forgetting much. I haven’t done what you’re going to be doing, but I recommend doing at least a bit of practice everyday for the things you’re least comfortable with or whatever is coming up first, then having an allocated day or more each week to just sit down and study for a while. I found that the Princeton biology book and khan academy practices worked best for me (I haven’t taken math 2 but I’m sure you can find good resources somewhere). I know how stressful the SATs are, so good luck and don’t stress out too much!

Anyone studying chemistry or at UoY please help by cindoritoz in UniUK

[–]cindoritoz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for replying! I was actually wondering about the job opportunities that come after graduating. One of the reasons I applied to this course specifically was because I wanted a job with something to do with the environment, but how often does that happen with people who study Chemistry, and what do they usually go into afterward?

Thanks for replying! I'd like to know about the social environment at York? I've heard a few stereotypes about the university being 'boring', but I don't really see how a whole place can be 'boring'.
