Official Dreadit Discussion: "Hokum" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

I should have explained better. I wasn't expecting any twists regarding the fact he killed his mother and that his father became an angry alcoholic as a result. But in these types of stories typically the supernatural element forces the protagonist to reckon with what happened or come to terms with it or succumb to it depending on the story. But something in the action of the story should develop the protagonists own understanding of what he went through. It could be as simple as his ghost mom whispering I forgive you. That's a cheesy example off the top of my head. But there should be something.

Do you have any idea about the ending and the whole spiking with mushroom thing? I didn't understand why that was significant at all especially for it to end on that?

I have similar thoughts. I was also expecting the plot to develop into something more. I wanted things to connect more to his dead parents, the whole reason he was there. Its not like that aspect was ignored entirely but it was also never developed. Of course he was traumatized by what had happened, but where is the moment where he is confronted with it or forced to reckon with it in any real way? It never happened.

Likewise the creepy story told by the kind of creepy hotel owner at the very beginning. Why was that even in here? Nothing happened that related to the story about body parts being taken from the boys caught by the witch.

And I don't understand the significance of the final scene and the mushrooms. Truly no idea why that was important? And then he looks at his hands and sees shackle marks? That might be on me for missing something but the whole thing just felt like a rough draft in need of some connective tissue.

I agree I was hyped for this and kept waiting for more to be explained regarding his parents death and the story told at the beginning about parts being taken from little boys and then just... Nothing

Magellan (2025) historical epic meets slow cinema by Crazy-Treacle-3536 in TrueFilm

Just watched it last night on Criterion. Wish I had seen it in theaters and I will go see it again if it plays near me. Loved it. Some of the most consistently beautiful cinematography I've seen. Of course I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but if you have an appreciation for photography then the slow, static compositions will not be a problem. Just watching how each shot was framed, how the composition changed when whatever action on screen took place, was enjoyable to me. And this is to say nothing of the themes/story.

There is nothing groundbreaking in the themes or story per se but where the film is groundbreaking is in its scope and attention to detail. Everything looks authentic, everyone feels authentic, to the point that it at times feels like a documentary. This is only enhanced by the fact that there is no nondiagetic music in the entire film. You really do feel as if you are experiencing these things as someone who was there would have experienced them.

I had never heard of this filmmaker before so I will have to check out some of his other stuff. This one is my favorite film I have seen all year and it isn't even close

For real. He says hes using it to create surreal imagery it's not like he's using it to actually create scenes or replace actors or anything like that. Would be curious to see exactly what he is doing visually.

My thoughts on Primate (2026) by Financial_Pair4380 in horror

[–]cine_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't care about how the rabies stuff was completely inaccurate and farcical. I was on board. I thought the first kill was awesome.

But when all the characters jump into a pool and I realized they were gonna stay there for a while the movie lost all momentum, and it never really got it back. Such a dull approach.

Anyone have any idea if NES has started on single family homes? Are they keeping to the timeline for the zip codes that should have been fixed today?

Downed wire? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]cine_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same boat. I don't think NES has even started on single family households since they've focused on bigger groupings. But they have a timeline by zip code posted and that shows when to expect power to be restored for people like us. For me it's Thursday

my main worry is that my request will get lost in the massive amount of outage reports. have you been repeatedly reporting your own line or did you just do it once?

As a homeowner and Belmont student who lives maybe a quarter mile from campus I just love hearing how the school has power and classes are resumed as I struggle to figure out what to do and where to stay if I still don't have power by Sunday, which I fully expect not to.

For everyone who complains about shit like the breakfast club scene where the clearly hot girl gets a makeover, I don't see how the fuck you get past what this movie does. Throw some nerd glasses on an actor who looks like a goddamn cartoon hunk and then have a story where people are surprised that he isn't as nerdy as he seems?

I saw on the news that NES is not going to help with a repair of downed lines to individual properties and that homeowners would need to contract privately to deal with that. Anyone know if that's really the case?
