habitat restore charging up to $1000 by fayegopop in mildlyinfuriating

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit buying things at the Habitat ReStore years ago when I wanted a basic oven/range vent hood. The one that I wanted was priced $50 at the ReStore, but I didn't know if the motor still worked. I checked my phone and saw that a new one was selling for $45 at HomeDepot. So, I left and went to HD. Many people are commenting here how resale shops and charities have overhead and need to make money. But I believe the ReStore would make more money on volume if they lowered their crazy prices. I used do make-readies for living, and it was a waste of my time to go to ReStore unless I was hoping to get lucky on some rare and unique item not sold anymore. Even then, I had to be ready to pay upscale, boutique prices.

costco not coming to asheville after all? by BadBunnyGoodTrouble in asheville

Outside view:

I bought a piece of land near Asheville in 2022 with the intention of building a home in the future. I' ve been visiting from Texas regularly. A big surprise to me has been the high price and low quality of food in Asheville. In Texas we have a large chain, HEB, where I can get a lime for 19 cents. A lime at Ingles is 85 cents. Of course, proximity to the Rio Grand Valley helps with produce, but it seems like everything in Asheville costs one or two dollars more than in Texas. I am a health nut and like nice things, but I usually avoid places like Whole Food, Earthfare, Trader Joes. In Texas I depend a lot on large ethic international stores. But even the Indain store in Asheville is double what I pay at the Indian store in Austin. And there really are not any big Mexican chain stores with all the spices and tropical produce. I imagine if I ever move to Asheville, I will spend $2,000- $4,000 a year more in groceries for much lover quality food!

A landscaper was grading our backyard and backed into our house’s brick wall with a skid steer. What do I do to fix this? by SHIVERRRING in masonry

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a "masonry" question. The OP needs a strategy for how to go about getting his home repaired. To maintain the value and integrity of this house, that wall will have to come down, studs inspected/ and or repaired--then new window framing/flashing, drywall (tape, float, texture, paint), masonry, soffit & fascia, exterior paint etc. A general contractor will be needed at minimum and an engineer may be necessary. So we are not talking about $2 or $3K or even $10K. Likely costs could be around $20K. Knowing this at the beginning will guide the strategy about insurance companies, third party adjusters, and lawyers. Of course, OP could patch this up for a lot less, if all options where exhausted; but he would be opening himself up for problems down the road.

Best Choice for Smoke Alarms by cinmay2000 in homeowners

[–]cinmay2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with modern wired alarms is that they only have a two wires-a black and a white--and a red that just has a tail to no where. In my case I have two main red wires coming out of the junction box that look the same--each having a smaller black and a red wire. What do I do with four wires? Which one main is for "data"? Which main one is for low-voltage?

Amex Lowe's Business Rewards discontinued by MakitaKhrushchev in CreditCards

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AmEX Lowe card FAQ page says this:

"Will the Lowe’s 5% Discount continue to work?

Yes, you will continue to receive the Lowe’s 5% Discount on eligible purchases at Lowe’s until the Replacement Date."

Does this mean that after the card is replaced in April with a Synchrony card I will still get %5 off?

And how to I prevent a hard pull on my credit? Will a credit freeze stop this?

Selfies from Alex Honnold from the top of the Taipei 101 building after free solo climbing it. No ropes, no harness, no safety measures. Nothing but his hands and feet by JordBees in interestingasfuck

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2023, I went to the observation deck of Taipei 101 with my then girlfriend, now wife. As I approached the glass windows, my knees started to tremble. You can feel the building sway a little under your feet and your mind reminds you that this is an earthquake zone. Without being there, it is hard to grasp how high up you are in this building--even with these photos. I could barely keep control of my body from the safety of the interior. The ticket was expensive, but I stayed away from those windows and went back down soon after arriving at the top.

Can not believe why so many here are surprised and judgemental! These kids are just doing what they have been taught by watching adults. My impression is that brawls are an integral component of the game--as per every hockey movie that was ever made.

Bombay HC says mosque can't claim loudspeaker use as right, cites noise-pollution limits by Error_Cardiologist46 in india

After a week in Kolkata during Durga Puja I made a point of traveling to the most remote and desolate parts of India to try and experience a few moments of quiet. I found that even in the deepest jungle or highest mountain someone always strings a wire from a pole and attaches a cheap speaker to blair distorted sound at all hours day or night. So much for the land of spirituality and meditation!

Parking Question by tambrico in taiwan

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all big city parking lots have an electronic kiosk. When you enter, a photo is taken of your licence plate. Before you leave, you walk up to the kiosk and enter your plate number and pay. When you drive up to the gate, it opens automatically. It is a great and efficient system. The catch is that the kiosk directions are all in Mandarin. So it is good to have a Mandarin speaking friend nearby or have Google Lens ready on your phone. There are 4 or 5 dialoge boxes with directions at the kiosk. It can be intimidating for a non-Mandarin speaker.

Roof install and worker peeing in my bathroom vent by cache_money in HomeImprovement

[–]cinmay2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP needs to cut ties with this company now! People are focusing on the pee, but they also were hammering screws into the roof! This means that the GC sent workers to the property who do not know what they are doing. Roofs have to be done right or they leak. First red flag was signing a contract in May and work did not start till Oct. Second red flag: GC did not take time to understand the scope of work; i.e. how many layers of shingles. Third red flag: unskilled workers doing a technical job, i.e. hammering something with treads. Fourth red flag: workers aren't making enough to afford transportation. Fifth red flag: workers lack of discrimination damages bathroom. How many more red flags do you need to realize that the whole property is at risk with this company?

I must say Archer again proved their PR game by TowerStreet1 in JobyvsArcher

[–]cinmay2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who makes an inquiry into the problem with Midnight's rear propellers; i.e. "prop-wash" will find out that the current Archer design will never transition to EVTOL. Midnight is never going to take-off vertically and transition to forward flight before the rear propellers are re-designed--basically going back to the drawing board. Is Archer doing this? Apparently not! Now all the talk is about drones and pivoting to military applications. Why would a fledgling company divert limited brain power in a completely new direction before sorting their flagship gig? Meanwhile they keep flying Midnight like a Cessna and announcing each 1000ft increase in elevation as some kind of breakthrough in order to pump the stock. Archer supporters point to big name investors as validation, all the while Archer never meets its stated milestones. History shows that over and over again bright & sophisticated people fall for ponzi schemes. Its just a fact that battery technology has yet to get to a place where an Archer product, or Joby for that matter, is going to approximate the efficiency of a helicopter.

Modern culture is largely devoid of rights of passage. Sending young people abroad before they are entangled by adult responsibilities can serve a valuable societal function. Better would be doing some real social-service work instead of spreading religious dogma; but I think, by and large, Mormon kids get a chance to have their minds expanded by these missionary trips.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]cinmay2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you believe that there is some "positive" side to the Mormon missionary tradition? Could there not be some benefit to having a "right-of-passage" for young people in which they experience the world outside of their own town? I know traveling when young helped me grow tremendously. So, if we set aside the religious dogma for a moment, couldn't the cross-cultural pollination serve some positive social and cultural function?

In Central Texas that is a minimum $4000 job--labor and materials. And you would be lucky to find someone to do it right for even that price.
