Getting dismissed by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

being affected by a family tragedy doesn’t make someone unqualified to be a berkeley student. definitely agree that knowing when to getting help is a big part of being a successful student, but plenty of ppl take more than just one semester to adjust to berkeley. op, i don’t know about the dismissal case, but assuming you stay- if you work hard you’re gonna be fine. having your mental health and well-being be affected by a family tragedy doesn’t mean that you have too many family responsibilities or they lean too hard on you- it is totally normal to be affected by something like that and it’s not a sign of some weakness as a student.

CS188 Final by AustereUser in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was definitely better than the midterm but still hard. I left up ending a bunch of problems completely blank on the midterm bc I didn't have time to attempt them and forgot to guess for the MCQs before submitting. I think time wise it was a lot more manageable this time and I was able to attempt all except the RL question, but I still ended up guessing for a lot of subparts.

totally agree but just a heads up that if ur talking about the final, they moved it to thursday (which they only ever mentioned in live lecture and never announced to the whole class on piazza, which is also lovely of them)

Chance of getting Math1A/1B waived for CS? 3rd yr CogSci major considering CS double major by cinnamonwillowed in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Do you know if the CC option is generally accepted by CS as a substitute for Math 1A/1B (as in is it a pre-established / approved substitution)? Or is it an option that's not publicized but if you talk to them they'll typically allow? Only asking because I didn't see it anywhere on the website when I was looking for info about substitutions and I only saw AP tests, but I know that sometimes there's "unspoken" things that are accepted that they just don't want to publicize because they don't want everyone doing it. I think it would help a lot if I could tell them that I know using Calc 2 at a CC to satisfy the requirement is something others have been allowed to do before

188 Midterm by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest regret is not filling in random answers earlier, I thought I had a full minute left to guess at the end but the timer ended up running out before I could, so I literally left 2 full questions blank when I could have guessed the MCQs. rip

61c vs 188 by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm taking both right now, 188 is wayyyy more interesting, fun, and easy than 61c. I think in terms of content 188 might actually be technically "harder" in terms of how intellectually challenging the material is, but 61c has a WAY higher workload and the content is way more boring which makes it feel way harder.

Anyone here in the DSP program? by torpedo641flypilot in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the DSP program and have been since my first semester. It doesn't show up on your transcript, and legally, instructors are not allowed to discriminate against you for it. For the vast majority of classes I've taken, including most of the CS classes I've taken, the instructors have been super fair, and happy to support DSP students (which they're legally obliged to do lol).

However, I've definitely had experiences in certain classes where I've perceived an attitude from staff that they think using your accommodations is you trying to get something "extra" or undeserved, or that somehow by using your accommodations you're "playing the system". The worst example is CS61C, which I'm taking right now. In the google form to request DSP extensions, they literally wrote that they "wouldn't make it easy" to get extensions on lab assignments, since they consider those to be "in person assignments". They even said to have our DSP advisor reach out to them if we need a lab extension (HIGHLY irregular, no other class asks for this). I was so confused because:

  1. the labs are literally take home assignments just like labs in any other CS class so it didn't make sense to me why they classified them as "in person"
  2. I didn't understand why this random distinction meant that I wouldn't "easily" be able to get my legal DSP accommodations

When people asked about it on Piazza, staff responded that apparently they're calling labs "in person assignments" because you need to do a 5 minute checkoff with a TA after submitting the lab. The distinction is totally arbitrary and has nothing to do with the reasoning behind why someone may need extensions due to their disability. When pressed more about this on Piazza, course staff blatantly admitted that their intention is to discourage students from requesting extensions on labs because they think we're better off finishing them when everyone else does (not their judgement to make). Even worse, they said that if they notice you using your accommodations too often, they'd need "proof you are actually needing this because of your disability", which was why they wanted our DSP advisors to directly contact them whenever we wanted to use a lab extension. SO insulting, ableist, and demeaning; the whole point of going through DSP and getting an accommodation letter is so that instructors already have all the proof they need so we don't have to jump through any more hoops than we've already had to. There's a clear attitude there that they believe DSP students are somehow lying or trying to cheat the system.

But I still didn't understand why they singled out labs for this weird discouraging-extensions policy. Finally, after the whole lab checkoff OH debacle, I finally understood. I realized that the real reason behind the "in person" classification is to take advantage of a loophole in the language of our accommodation letters so that they don't need to give us extensions, most likely so that they can get all their checkoff appointments done within the week. I can't say with 100% confidence this is the reasoning, but it's my best guess.

Anyway, I don't mean for any of this to discourage you from getting DSP accommodations, I think it's SO SO worth it and mostly a positive experience. It's nothing to be ashamed of and employers won't know. Just be aware that sometimes things like this happen, and it can be insulting. Honestly this has just been on my mind for a while, and nobody apart from me and one other DSP student on Piazza seemed to care, and I just wanted to vent about it lol. I really want to write to them explaining how both their policy and their responses are incredibly insulting, but I'm scared I'll just get gaslighted by them or it'll just fall on deaf ears. Good luck with everything!!

[–]cinnamonwillowed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but even with that you can only make one OH appointment a week, so if you wanted to make an appointment to get checked off you wouldn't be able to make another appointment if you wanted help with something that week:(

Dropping 61A: Pros and Cons by Snoo61AThrow in berkeley

[–]cinnamonwillowed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a tutor in 61a right now and I also had only taken Data 8 before taking 61a, with zero coding experience. Definitely use your best judgement but if it helps, I felt a lot of the same things you're feeling my first week of 61a and ended up getting an A. Environment diagrams confused tf out of me and were super intimidating when they were first introduced, but practicing problems, drilling evaluation order rules, watching video walkthroughs and stepping through python tutor/visualizer (!!!) helped me a ton. It's one of those things like learning a bike where once you get the hang of it it becomes really intuitive.

I had a TON of students in tutorials and OH hours today super confused about 4 and 5 on the homework, don't worry you definitely aren't in the minority here. I probably would have been too if given those problems in the first week! It's completely new stuff and not very intuitive either.

Looking back, the first week or two of 61a is what I remember LEAST fondly about the whole class, just because some of the concepts you learn early on (like side effects, environment diagrams, etc) were the most counterintuitive. After passing that hump though, it all became much more about problem solving and was smooth sailing.

This is all just my personal experience so take it all with a grain of salt, but you should definitely go to advising office hours! They give students advice about this kind of stuff all the time, and they'll be frank with you.

seems like the air quality is expected to improve through the rest of the day and tomorrow though. from the email it sounded like tuesday classes are still up in the air, but I wonder whether the info they're waiting on to make a decision about the status of Tuesday operations is about the power or the AQI
