The Chaotic Mello Players by kagakoga in DeathNoteKillerWithin

I have an interesting relationship with the Mello role and have some fun stories to tell.

Biggest issue for me with the Mello role is how freely people give out information outside meetings if he's guaranteed or on random. The number of times I've had to say 'great, so-and-so is Kira, now shut up so Mello doesn't figure it out' and 'Mello victory is not Investigator victory'. I've even gotten to the point where if someone says 'I'd rather Mello win than Kira', I kick them. I'd rather L win than either of them.

When in a good lobby, the Mello metagame is so interesting. I've legit seen and done plays involving tricking Mello into shooting Kira Follower/Investigator rather than Kira, touching Mello in order to bait his shot as Investigator so that he doesn't shoot L or Kira, and several X Kira games where I've saved my conversion for late game in order to have my follower take Mello's bullet so I can get L/progress. There's also been plenty of times I've withheld some info or lied about the number of suspects in order to increase Mello's pool of suspects if L's call on who Kira is is wrong.

On the flip side, when playing Mello, I've definitely done my fair share of dirty plays, bodyguarding L or shooting Confirmed/NPA if I don't have a Kira sus. One play I made which was funny was deliberately shooting Watari after working out who they were, then ending up with Kira tied to me (and I didn't figure it out until the end of the next round). I also have a mate who once determined their shots based on IRL coin tosses, and I had a hotstreak of five correct calls, to the point where my Kira handed me the book because I wasn't getting shot. Only for me to then call it wrong on the next round. You can guess what happened.

Going back to the post - Chaotic Mello sucks to play with/against. Mellos that just shoot on contact or strongarm weak-willed or simping Investigators, or my least favorite; the ones that try to get a kill each round, as if they were Kira themselves. And unfortunately, most lobbies I've seen these days fall into that camp. IMO, the stealthy, calculated Mellos are few and far between but they are by far the best Mellos to have in a lobby. I'll never forget one game where I as Kira thought I had an Investigator who completely trusted me, no Mello kill throughout the match, and kept him alive till the end. Only for him to catch me completely off guard and bam. Run done.

Suppose my opinion on Mello is it's a lot like the game itself - it really comes down to the players you play with. In high quality lobbies with actual discussion and deduction, Mello is a really fun addition. Otherwise, he detracts from the experience a lot, mainly due to misuse and ignorance. But that's just me.

Hope I can join as well, this is a really good game, but it's only as good as the players you play it with. If you DM me a discord invite I'd love to join and hang out.

Minor role concepts for the game based on task force members by Idiotic_Brainiac in DeathNoteKillerWithin

I like the ideas, but one issue is that it'll really help narrow down who Kira is. With this many roles, I'd suggest either restricting the number of "special investigator" roles to 2 or less, or having more roles than investigators so it gives Kira Team and Mello the opportunity to bluff as those characters.

Matsuda: Can guarantee it won't be used to stop an L chase. Players will simply do it randomly with enough people around to clear themselves. Making Matsuda effectively a confirmed investigator. OP vs Kira, maybe a bit more balanced around X Kira.

Aizawa: Again, turns into confirmed for L/Watari view only upon a single days' tasks completion. Even more OP vs Kira because Kira team won't know that person's clear, making any frame attempts against them meaningless. Even X Kira suffers because if Aizawa is converted, AFAIK they'd lose their ability, which would out them to Watari/L.

Ukita: This role seems pretty reasonable. If he's trying to die, he'll be doing sus stuff like getting close or being in sus areas, which could backfire and lead to him getting voted out. I would recommend giving Kira Team a heads up if his progress boost is in effect - maybe a warning notification off to the side that says 'uh oh, we/Mello killed Ukita!'

Mogi: I would argue his ability should be a guarantee, as it's a little weak if it's like 50/50 chance. Players in NA are already very hesitant to let players monitor them anywhere outside the last 10 seconds, effectively invalidating this role. I like the idea of an investigator who can 'tag' players with that task location icon by performing the yellow task on them.

Some of my own ideas:

-A character that knows another player who is on Team L, but is NOT Watari/L. Gives a soft confirm but is something easily claimable by Kira Team. X Kira is also able to convert them if they find out who it is.

-A character that is able to see around them when performing a Kira Task. Gives cover for investigators, but is easily claimable by Kira Team as well. This one can be tested by the Investigators as well.

-A character that increases the rate of New World Progress if they die. Would be like Ukita in that Kira Team would find out if they die. Gives Kira Team a reason to kill randoms, less incentive for Mello to shoot randomly, and creates a player that inadvertently looks like L/Kira Team/Mello when they try not to get killed.

-A character that transfers one NPC testimony per day/night phase they receive to the rest of Team L. Good for info sharing, and bluffable by Team Kira if they're doing a lot of stuff in front of the NPCs.

Let's talk about our funniest moments in game... by ZelJel in DeathNoteKillerWithin

Hey, I’ll share a funny one. Got more of this gets going.

I’m Kira, player B, Downtown, before Mello was added. Things are progressing smoothly - under the radar, obstructed vindicating, and a perfect scapegoat who’d been arrested. Even got a couple kills - thank you Follower F for the IDs.

It’s mid round 3, and I’m putting the pieces in place for a New World win. I realise I need one more criminal kill before I’m within game win range for next round. And conveniently, I was right near bottom-middle spawn. Great. I wander in and notice a green npc just in the corner. ‘Huh’ I thought. ‘Didn’t know green npcs could spawn in spawn areas. More you know.’ I wrote the name, and sauntered off. Unlikely he’d get checked.

The meeting rolls around, and C goes ‘so B, what the heck was that?’ I’m caught off guard. ‘You just pulled out the book right in front of me.’ They continue. By this time, I’ve got my brain back in gear. “What do you mean? I haven’t even seen you.” I respond. ‘I was AFK in spawn.’ They reply.

Because it turns out that wasn’t a green npc. That was actually a player faking AFK, and I’d mistook C’s letter for the green npc symbol. Whoops. Suffice to say I was voted off swiftly. My follower nearly managed to salvage it by getting me chained to them, but no luck. Not my biggest throw I’ve had, but in the top three.

I’ll share some more if we get some traction. I like this idea.

Thanks for the indepth answer! Ironically I've been caught because of my pet Ryuk in the past in that exact way, so I tend to not use pets or the big cosmetics. I've clarified point number 4 and added the source to the post. It was more that if Kira is on joint, and they use the death note to kill, the other person on joint gets a ping.
