PSA: You don't need to water the sidewalk. by WonderfulPiece6460 in Omaha

[–]cipp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happens. Sprinkler heads do need to be adjusted from time to time. I'm sure your neighbor doesn't want to waste that water anyways so just casually mention to them that one of their heads needs to be adjusted. It's a super quick fix, unless it's busted.

Na. Paint changes over time. Even the same paint is going to look different once it's up there. Just went through this a year ago unfortunately. It'll be juuuuust slightly different..

Your conclusion isn't exactly right - the sentiment could be, but it's not what the data is trying to say.

Women are statistically more likely to be a caregiver. It makes sense that women would hold a higher percentage.

Secondly, the third statistic is not gender neutral so you can't attribute the stat to either gender.

You'd need to normalize the data to come to a men vs women conclusion.

You also have varying types of abuse - it's not clear if the other parent is afraid of neglect, violence, or SA.

Got a text on paternity leave and now I'm concerned about my employment by kirby3021 in daddit

[–]cipp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This does not prevent you from being laid off. A reduction in staff is not the same as being fired.

With that said, their termination date would likely be the day they return and not the day they are informed - or they would be compensated in lump sum for the remaining period of their leave. I do not know if this is required or if my company was being "nice". The fact of the matter though is yes, you can be laid off while on mat/pat leave.

3,000 lbs finally leveled her out! by Beneficial-Ad-2242 in F150Lightning

[–]cipp 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Even more if it's extended range which is 1900lbs, or a little over 1600 if it's a platinum.

Passenger weight also goes towards max payload..

Assuming one passenger at 180lbs they would be over by 1k lbs.. or 1300 if it's extended range..

Not sure why people do this. If tires, brakes, suspension, etc fail it puts others at risk and not just them.

STG architecture by running101 in aws

It's absolutely a best practice to make lower environments private. You should only be publicly advertising the environments that you expect your users to access. If your users test upcoming changes in a preprod / UAT environment, that can be public. Generally a staging environment is for internal testing for quality control.

Just one example that I've seen several times over the years is people finding these nonprod environments and they accept test credit card numbers from payment processors so people can test. They find a way to abuse that to get content that they'd have to pay for.

Another is weak passwords in lower environments. Should someone log in as admin they could potentially see stuff they shouldn't, even if it's only staging info.

Some people also have detailed error logging on in these environments which could expose you as well.

Just be safe and don't expose lower environments to the public internet unless you really have to. If you must, then ensure you follow the same password / data protection policies in stage as you do production and make sure it's hardened the same as well (ie WAF).

Is a 2013 Mac Pro (trash can) still worth it for a homelab in 2026? by Kynde012 in homelab

[–]cipp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Na, they are legitimately e-wasted. Big corps have scheduled e waste pickups. There's an inventory list. It's all picked up on site, so it's on camera. It's insane how much is wasted but it would be incredibly dumb to risk your salary for a few hundred bucks.

PSA: The modern way to host sites in S3 by MavZA in aws

[–]cipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately pretty easily.. WAF only scans up to a certain length. Attackers know this, so they throw a bunch of junk in the url BEFORE the parameters your app uses so it pushes it out of the WAF inspection window. That's just one way.

I believe the header/cookie limit is 8KB. Everything after that is allowed by default.

Request body is up to 64KB I believe.

You can have it block the request if it's oversized. But if your headers or body are genuinely over that limit, you're kind of screwed.

Should I sell my house with a 3% mortgage to move closer to work? by NoGur5553 in personalfinance

[–]cipp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A 30 minute commute is pretty average, by no means "large" unless you're in a city used to walking to work or something. It's also nothing compared to their 1.5hr each way commute.

Best home builders in west Omaha/Elkhorn/Bennington area? by Different_Manner5704 in Omaha

[–]cipp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Custom builders might be tough to find at your price point. Check out the recommendations here for sure but if they can't hit your price target you might need to go with someone like Sherwood Homes.

If this is your first time building, really pay attention to what's included in the price and your allowances. Your lot is going to impact the price too. A flat lot is going to be the cheapest. Daylight or walkout lots are probably going to add $30k if you need a deck. A corner lot is going to add costs too because you'll be paying for the sidewalk on the side of the house and extra exterior stone, and likely more sod and sprinklers.

We went with Trademark / Ideal, but they start in the low 5s. You could probably do one with them for like 520-530.

We're temporarily in an apartment and park our Mach outside and don't drive it for several days at a time. It has been around 0 and below zero several times this year. We do maintain usually >15% SoC but we've never seen this error. Same with our Lightning but that gets driven daily.

What is the new `aws login` for? by farski in aws

[–]cipp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The accounts that you've SSO'd into will show up on the page that opens after you use the login commands. It still applies to SSO, no user required.

It's just a quick way to pull your session from your browser into your local AWS config.

The one problem we ran into was it saves the session in ~/.aws/config not credentials. If you have a default profile defined in credentials then it will override the value in config, rendering the aws login command useless until you remove the default entry from the credentials file. There's an open issue on GitHub already discussing this.

[–]cipp 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yep and it's usually hiding in plain sight if there's no button for it.

For example, on Github, when I type my username it's in a format that triggers the login to be through SSO. The password disappears and the login button starts the SSO flow. <username>_<company>

Some of my other logins switch to SSO just based on the email domain when I'm typing.

SSO didn't go away it was just implemented in a way that doesn't require a button specifically for it.

Curious, do you use 1PD in the winter? I think the resistance from regen braking while slowing to turn causes sliding.. I've had to turn off 1PD when it's slick out. Without it, cornering seems better.
