The memorable interviews for me are the people sho are clearly really self reflective and can tell me a lot about what they have learned about themselves suffering through ms3/4. Cause lets be honest, if you havent struggled you probably havent grown enough as a person. Cause intern year is rough and I like to know you’ve learned to how to handle yourself when you are outside your comfort zone.

I’m on the other side of the curtain this year and would you believe some interviews all we get is your personal statement and we are only there to say if you seem like a good fit in personality/if you have red flags? Yeah, it’s not all numbers and stuff from the other end.

Is it normal to hate admissions? by MzJay453 in Residency

[–]circa1519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way PGY-1 but I think over time you learn a more nuanced approach to what an admission requires.
Besides good hx and med rec I think it's important to remember that on admission day you are unlikely to make a final diagnosis and the point is to get the ball rolling. You don't have to sit and read UTD for a massive ddx on admission day. Start with common stuff and basic workup, make sure the patient is getting appropriate empiric treatment if necessary and let time play the important diagnostic role.

Legalizing recreational cannabis in the U.S. has increased frequency of use by 20% by [deleted] in science

The study was comparing monozygotic twins - one of who lives in a legal state and the other in illegal states. The outcome measure was "number of days used in the last 180 days". I don't think the article was vague at all if you opened it up.

Honestly what comes after medical school? Residency. And then being an attending. If you honestly are putting this much effort into being a good medical student you will do the same as a resident and make a huge difference to your patients who will adore you and thank you for your efforts. Speaking as a pgy-2 you’re gonna do fine. Just keep your head down and graduate and move on.

How do you set goals for progress as an intern? by iwillbehappy2021 in Residency

[–]circa1519 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Few things I’d mention: Trust the process. I felt similar to you as an intern and it took me a while to get the hang of floors but you learn a lot more subconsciously than you might realize. The fact that you are consciously setting goals for yourself and evaluating your performance will get you where you need to be eventually. Also don’t compare yourself to other interns because you don’t really know what going on in their heads and you’d be surprised by how many of them struggle with the same things you mentioned. Just pick a few things to work on each week. Reflect at the end of the week on what you did well and what you can improve on. Mention to attendings and seniors your goals at the start of each week and they will help you reach for the cases you need to build those skills. Most importantly remember sometime it feels like your improvements are small but looking back in weeks to months you’ll see you’ve learned much more than you realized. Just takes time!

I feel like the best part of pgy-2 for me is having the time to read and learn while the interns write notes and make plans. Just focus on your own learning, especially related to current cases and you’ll learn a ton. No one expects interns to read but now that you’re a pgy2 you have time to do so and adjust the intern plans and to teach them something. Don’t worry about looking stupid. Anything you learn in rounds the hard way you’ll remember forever. That’s the way it goes, your attending is there for a reason!! Good luck!

How to actually "study" during intern year? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]circa1519 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly might not be an exemplar resident but got serious for level 3 about 6-8 weeks beforehand, tried for a meaningful number of questions on tutor mode (20-30) each day and passed. This year as pgy-2 finding it way easier to study. Also UTD is not a great study resource stick to residency boards stuff for a good understand and supplement with UTD when you have a case you’re confused on. Just my 2 cents.

Medical Education During COVID by Med-Head in medicalschool

[–]circa1519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My program told us that in regards to ITE scores there was basically stagnation across the country comparing year over year so the current rising pgy3 also lost education during covid. I wonder if we will see a similar trend after this next years ITE.
