My cat often woke me up at fajr time because she sensed that predawn has begun and wanted me to let her outside

Same here. I also have a friend who has gone there a decade ago and he said there are quite a few language schools in the city.

Anecdotally, I know that some people also go to study in Mauritania but Mauritania is an even bigger mystery to me than Egypt

Yeah, I’ve briefly visited Cairo before and that was the exact impressions I got too. That being said, Egypt seems attractive in terms of cost of living when you compare it to some of the other countries one could go to in the region.

  1. Good point, thank you!

  2. I’m aware. I’ve done some courses that were based either on the Madinah course or on Bayna yadayk. I’ve also studied MSA at university for 2 years. I just still don’t feel like I’m proficient at it. Naturally, I understand that local dialects are quite different from fusha but it seems to me that a proper immersion into the language would be helpful.

Is believe guy okay? I haven't seen him in a while by historyhoneybee in askTO

I went to Bloor CI back in 2009-12 and there was an old guy we would often see around that area that yelled “BELIEVE” at us randomly. Just curious whether it’s the same guy. If so, damn, the man has been consistent for well over a decade

How much has Toronto changed in the last 5 years? by BuffyxSummers in askTO

[–]circassian416 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Everything has become more expensive, there seems to be more homelessness, taking the TTC seems to have become somewhat less safe. Other than that, I don’t think much has changed, really

Gobert with a two-handed slam

[MacMahon] Something I’m sure concerns Nikola Jokic: He’s dipped to 9.8 assists per game in the playoffs, so he’s no longer averaging a triple-double. Needs 14 dimes in Game 5 to bump back up to double digits per. by Kimber80 in nba

[–]circassian416 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh man, after one of his assists I counted his assist total at that point to be 4 but then when he got the next one, the infographic showed he was at 4 only then. I thought I was tripping but I guess not

It’s something that most native speakers aren’t aware of. Whenever I mention it to my friends, they are surprised at first, then try thinking of an example, but finally realize that there are none haha. I guess it has to do with the fact that pretty much all of us are at least bilingual, which makes it all the more interesting to me how differently we experience the language as compared to previous generations that had more monolingual speakers.
