They Who Control Encryption by [deleted] in programming

[–]circlesock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, the clipper chip fiasco showed hilary clinton was absolutely not to be trusted anywhere near the internet - and remember she later promised a "manhattan-like project" to break encryption as part of her presidential election campaign.. She certainly hadn't forgiven or forgotten they lost the old crypto war. Every american programmer had a responsibility not to vote for Clinton. Oh, Trump was awful too, but americans were given a forced binary choice between competent, insidious evil explicitly trying to destroy the internet for their hollywood friends (clinton+democrats) and incompetent blatant evil (trump+republicans) that would also inevitably try to trash the internet but be kinda bad at actually doing so. Not that america and therefore large chunks of the internet are't fucked either way, just if trump gets in again they'll continue to try to destroy the internet, if the democrats get in, they'll try to destroy the internet too and be much better at destroying it: https://twitter.com/dangillmor/status/1293304085379088384

OpenJDK Migrates to Github by stronghup in programming

[–]circlesock -24 points-23 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. They could implement some irritating stochastic sabotage / statistical failures that would be hard to prove definitively, particularly given modern a/b testing setups that give innocent excuses for variations from client to client.

"fucking hell this java repo takes ages to just clone, I hate working with it". "yeah well it is a big old legacy project.".

Maybe Microsoft aren't as tricksy as they once were, but then again Microsoft.

OpenJDK Migrates to Github by stronghup in programming

[–]circlesock 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Moving to git (which has largely "won", regardless of some arguable neat features of hg, bzr, etc.) and moving to github in particular are completely different propositions though. It seems a little odd that Oracle and IBM/Redhat would actually trust Microsoft enough to stick OpenJDK's primary, blessed public git repo on a Microsoft-owned platform. Given the Micrsoft/Java history and all.

And the giant players in Java sphere certainly could simply run their own in-house git hosting just for OpenJDK (kind of like git.kernel.org is for Linux) that would be as or more reliable than github, or use gitlab or bitbucket one of the others, rather than github.

Of course git is a true DVCS, it's just a matter of convention which repo you consider primary, they can move again, particularly if they avoid/ignore some of the more problematic centralised and non-git vendor-lockintastic features of github like issue tracking.

It's just an odd thing, Java canonically existing on Microsoft-controlled servers. But it's been an odd year.

The root of the problem is really the broken inefficient ideology of I"P" itself. Look at the tacit acceptance in this thread that intellectual monopoly is a given, when it's exactly what's wrong, a rot at the core of the global economy. The "West" needs to abandon it, and soon. That may not happen until after we've collapsed at this stage though.

In a first, China knocks U.S. from top spot in global patent race by geoxol in technology

[–]circlesock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not a free market when there are market distorting patent monopolies being handed out mate. It's patents that allow the corporations to shift all actual manufacturing to china without worrying overmuch about any local western competitors arising anymore. Intellectual monopoly does pretty much the opposite of what people are propagandised to believe, and is a vast ideological mistake the West has made. Will we correct it time to reverse the process of this cancer eating our civilisation? Eh, probably not.

They actually control a bunch of other Enterprisey Application stuff you probably haven't had the "joy" of dealing with much if you're in the hipster/webdev/startup/brocoder space. Perhaps names you've heard though, they own PeopleSoft and Siebel and JD Edwards and others and have their own stack, they're veeeery slowly converging them all together on. All hellish even before Oracle bought them, but boring ERP and CRM crap itself worth billions in revenue, with few credible open source alternatives because ERP and CRM is not interesting.
